Best Buy leak reveals ICS updates for 3 Android phones on Verizon

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 05:06 PM PDT

Hark, yon owners of the HTC Rezound and Motoroloa Droid Razr and Droid Razr Maxx!

Our comrades over at Android Police have gotten their mitts on a picture of leaked Best Buy info, detailing the exact dates of ICS dropping for the aforementioned devices. Not only that, but if the April 4th and 6th dates are to be believed, it's going to happen a lot sooner than many were expecting. While the validity of any leak is within question, Android Police have a goodly amount of faith in this particular source. As always, the proof is in the pudding, and we'll know for sure come April 4 th (for the Motorola Razr and Maxx) and April 6th (for the HTC Rezound).

What do you think? Fact or fiction? Excited or meh? Let us know in the comments!

Best Buy emails out May 6 launch date for HTC One X (AT&T)

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 10:11 AM PDT

Since initially announcing the upcoming availability of the HTC One X, AT&T has remained largely silent as to price and release date.  Rumors regarding the international version have been pointing early April dates however those of us in the United States are left in the dark.  A new email allegedly sent from Best Buy seems to shed some light on the subject of AT&T's launch.

According to a customer who pre-ordered the HTC One X at his local Best Buy (Mobile) store, AT&T plans to make the phone available on May 6th.  What's more, the email alludes to the fact that the date has been changed or differs from whenever AT&T initially expected to launch.

The change in release time frame may have come as a result of the T-Mobile leak from this week.  Perhaps after learning that T-Mobile's model would debut on April 22, AT&T has stepped on the gas and moved their HTC One X up a bit.

T-Mobile details Ice Cream Sandwich delay for Sensation 4G

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 09:39 AM PDT

We had expected to see the T-Mobile Sensation 4G receive its Android 4.0 update by the end of March but that's likely not going to happen.  As to why the beloved 4G smartphone hasn't been dished its Ice Cream Sandwich yet, T-Mobile blames HTC.

Speaking from their Facebook page last weekend, a T-Mobile spokesperson indicated that HTC has turned over a build of the Android 4.0/Sense 3.6 ROM that doesn't live up to the carrier's standards.  What's more, it sounds as if T-Mobile is pointing the proverbial finger at HTC since it has been a while since testing of the ROM had commenced.

"HTC has delivered a ROM to us however it is still having issues the reason that other sensation types have the update without issue and ours did not come out that way is because every ROM must be adapted to the hardware of the device because we use a different radio than other providers and also have applications such as wifi calling it also has to be compatible with those. What the HTC rep told you is most likely correct because once a ROM is delivered we have 2 weeks to test it and then approve it or send it back they then have 4 weeks to fix the bugs and return it back to us, where we are exactly in that process I do not know but that is how a ROM is delivered to the customer.

The original ROM was not delivered to us in November, we started testing it just recently but I think it has been longer than 2 weeks so at this point HTC most likely has the ball.

You bought a phone and it has been announced that you are getting ICS you have every right to know what's going on with it and when you can see these awesome features. I did go into a lot of detail about how a ROM gets to the end user (you guys) but that wasn't to point fingers only so you would have a better understanding of why you don't have it yet, the bottom line is the Sensation has T-Mobile's and HTC's name all over it and both companies want to make you proud to be a Sensation owner so we are working as fast as we can to deliver it but also want to make sure that it stands up to your expectations."

We're all for carriers and handset makers being transparent to customers and appreciate T-Mobile's stance on this particular situation.  On the other hand, we have to wonder whether or not they would have said anything at all were they not repeatedly asked by their users.

New Google Drive details surface

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 08:36 AM PDT

The guys at TalkAndroid were able to get their hands on a screen shot(above) for the upcoming, long-rumored Google Drive.  The cloud-based storage system has been talked about for nearly half a decade now and should be Google's 'answer' to services like Dropbox, Box, and SugarSync.

As it appears, all users should be presented with 5GB of storage right out of the gate with paying customers and/or business users able to purchase larger pools.  With some of the players in the cloud space offering upwards of 30GB-50GB of storage, it stands to reason that Google would keep that in mind.

According to support documents, the Google Drive service will include a document editor much in the way that Google Docs does today.  In fact, source such as Engadget surmise that the Drive features could be a logical extension or re-positioning of Docs.  We've watched Docs allow for new file types over the last few years, tossing in new tools along the way.  All it would take is a few more types, such as photos and other media to round things out.  Honestly, I would not be surprised to learn that it somehow ties to your Google+ account and incorporates your pictures and videos somehow.

Rumors suggest that we could be days or weeks away from an announcement for Google Drive so we fully expect more details to shake out soon.

You Tell Us

What feature(s) would you like to see incorporated into a Google Drive?  Would you stop using your current apps or services in favor of a Google-branded client?

Amazon Appstore 2.3 features new notification, download options

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 08:11 AM PDT

The Amazon Appstore application for Android has been updated to version 2.3 today, bringing along a few handy improvements.  The version release notes tell us that users will have added flexibility for downloads over 3G and 4G networks, letting us set the maximum at 50MB before forcing us to Wi-Fi.  Additionally, a bug fix  lets users suppress non-essential notifications, keeping us from getting those goofy "update available" messages.

If you're new to Android and want another option for downloading apps and games, the Amazon Appstore is one we'd recommend.  Offering up a free paid app once per day, it's also a good source for new and exclusive titles.

LG Optimus Elite leaks with Sprint, Virgin Mobilebranding

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 07:10 AM PDT

A set of newly-leaked images have landed online today, giving us a clear look at a handset headed for Sprint and Virgin Mobile.  Called the LG Optimus Elite, the specifications include an 800MHz processor, 3.2-inch HVGA display, 5-megapixel camera with flash, and NFC support.  Yeah, maybe these phones will be Elite in name only, but so what?  If NFC is to see mass adoption then we need to put up with "low-end" stuff like this every once in a while.

Expect to see Sprint's version announced relatively soon, followed by Virgin Mobile in May.  According to Pocketnow, the no-contract carrier shouldn't be asking much more than $100 for this one.

doubleTwist updates Android app, but what is this “new dawn”?

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 07:00 AM PDT

Earlier this week, mecca audio developer doubleTwist released the latest update of their self-titled app, bringing with it a UI change and several awesome features. First, foremost, and possibly the best, doubleTwist now comes with Google Music integration.  It's now possible to access your Google-tunes, at least the ones that you have set for offline playback. If you have as much audio-candy in Google's system as I do, this is a great perk, especially considering that doubleTwist handles podcasts and video playing.

What they've done is essentially pare down the usual multitudinous Android apps that you need to handle various media into one clever player; I'm a fan. Also in the update was improved support for AppleTV and better album art downloading, among other various bug fixes, all squeezed together in the form of a smaller install size than the previous update. Kudos, doubleTwist.

But really, the main news here is doubleTwist's recent countdown tease (also mentioned on their Twitter feed) alluding to something major, with no hint as to what it might be. Granted, it might not have anything to do with the Android app itself, but then again... It. Just. Might. Rest assured that our metaphorical eyebrow is quirked in just as perplexedly a fashion as yours, and we'll be following this with much interest.

Of course, if you don't use doubleTwist at all (try it by clicking the Play Store link below), this may not interest you at all, so what music app do you use? And if you do use doubleTwist, what do you think the "new dawn" might be? Let us know in the comments!

Sprint hangs up on WiMAX devices and shifts entirely to LTE

Posted: 30 Mar 2012 06:34 AM PDT

Sprint is completely done with releasing WiMAX 4G devices and is ready to move on to 4G LTE, according to new details hitting the wires today.  Speaking at Competitive Carriers Global Expo today, Sprint's Bob Azzi confirmed that they would be solely focusing on LTE for future smartphones and tablets.

We learned earlier in the year that Sprint would be releasing more than one dozen 4G LTE products in 2012, including handsets, tablets, and data cards.  It was anticipated that at least some of the carrier's products would include support for WiMAX however that's all but officially put to rest.

As to where exactly Sprint will be deploying their LTE network over the next few months and years has not been fleshed out in a public light.  The carrier has announced a handful of select markets slated to pick up LTE but we don't know where things will be in the long term.  A newly-leaked image hitting the internet today tells where Sprint hopes to be by the end of 2014 when everything is in place.  Looking at the picture we see plenty of coverage along the eastern half of the country, mixed with Sprint 4G LTE and roaming agreements across the western half.

Sprint has an event scheduled one week from today so we're hoping the carrier gives some new details as it pertains to the 4G LTE plans.  Considering the EVO One is rumored to be a 4G LTE handset it stands to reason that Dan Hesse will chat up the new Now Network.
