Sega title Football Manager finally heading to Android

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 04:51 PM PDT

Android Central

Football Manager is one of those blockbuster PC titles that, year after year, attracts huge numbers of players. The handheld version has been available on iOS for a while now, but Sega has finally decided to bring it to Android, further bolstering their ever developing catalog.

The launch of this premium title will also come with a premium price. In the UK, it'll cost £6.99 when it launches in the Google Play Store on April 11.

So what does £6.99 actually get you? A pretty full featured Football Manager experience, that's what. Leagues are included from 12 countries, as is full control over transfers -- vital in getting your local, lower league team to Premier League glory. In match live control is also along for the ride, with an adjustable match speed.

While initially available from the Google Play Store, Sega have said that it will likely be available from other Android app stores in the coming weeks.

Google CEO Larry Page on Android in 2012 - 850,000 devices activated daily, 300 carriers

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 03:40 PM PDT

Larry Page

Google CEO Larry Page brought us his 2012 update on the state of Google to the Investor Relations blog today, and naturally he had a good bit to say about Android. Nestled among the status of things like search and Chrome, Page puts it plainly -- Android is on fire, and activating over 850,000 devices each day.

Android is on fire, and the pace of mobile innovation has never been greater. Over 850,000 devices are activated daily through a network of 55 manufacturers and more than 300 carriers. Android is a tremendous example of the power of partnership, and it just gets better with each version. The latest update, Ice Cream Sandwich, has a beautiful interface that adapts to the form of the device.  Whether it’s on a phone or tablet, the software works seamlessly.

He also reminisces about the early days of Google mobile products, where they had to build their services one phone at a time. Android's purpose was to bring forth a set of mobile standards that operators and manufacturers could build devices around, and with 55 OEMs, it looks like it's succeeding on that front as well.

Page also touches a bit on the acquisition of Motorola Mobility, stating that Google is "excited about the opportunities to build great devices capitalizing on the tremendous success and growth of Android and Motorola’s long history of technological innovation". But the open nature of Android, and the investment that other hardware vendors have made won't be forgotten, and he looks forward to working with everyone to continue the open ecosystem that is Android.

It's a refreshing read from the mind of Google's chief executive, and well worth the read. It's apparent that Page has his eyes on the future, and we're all in for a great ride.

Sprint as announced the availability of Ice Cream Sandwich for the Nexus S 4G this afternoon. The version will be IMM76D, and it has the same 4.0.4 features as we've come to expect from the GSM versions of phones running it. Sprint hasn't gave an official timeline for when to expect the rollout, but we would suggest checking right about now to everyone who has been waiting. And don't forget -- if you get the update notice, hit one of the developers or forums advisers before you click anything if you want to help the community out by providing a download link.

Heads up: We be podcastin' on Friday this week!

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 01:33 PM PDT

Android Central Podcast

Due to circumstances entirely in our control, we're going to forgo our usual Thursday night podcast this week and instead move it to Friday afternoon! (Those circumstances being Phil's gonna be fresh off one of them whirlybird things and wants to see his wife and kids. You understand.)

But a little procrastination on our part's going to mean that you folks of the European persuasion will be able to join us without having a double espresso beforehand. We'll be going live at 9 p.m. BST, 4 p.m. EDT or 1 p.m. on the west coast. And that gives us plenty of time to collect our thoughts on all the HTC news we've seen this week, and it gives you folks some more time to send your e-mails and voicemails. We'll see you then!

Sony Mobile celebrates 'Night of Imagination' with Labrinth and iLuminate

Previously we mentioned that Sony Mobile would be taking on some new inspiration for the launch of their latest devices being the Xperia S, Xperia P and Xperia U by heading up a new promotion called 'Night of Imagination'. To help kick things off right in London, they teamed up British singer-songwriter Labrinth and a group called iLuminate who have created the world’s first and only wearable, wireless lighting technology, using LED and EL-wire.

The 'Night of Imagination' was quite a success for Sony Mobile with Labrinth performing songs from his latest album, Electronic Earth and iLuminate providing stunning on-stage visuals for the audience. If you're looking to check out some of the footage, you can jump past the break for a video from the event itself.

HTC EVO 4G LTE promo video released, offers glimpse of possible 3D variant

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 11:51 AM PDT

We've already explained how the EVO 4G LTE just might be better then the HTC One X and by now, you've already checked out our complete coverage from Sprints event yesterday but have you seen the EVO 4G LTE promo video yet? If not, go ahead and click on play above to dig in.

Is the the EVO 3D LTE?In a separate video (see it after the break), eagle-eyed viewers might also notice a few frames of what seems to be a 3D version of the new EVO, sporting the trademark dual rear camera setup. See this screenshot to the left? Skip to 25 seconds in, and you'll see what certainly looks like a 3D variant of the EVO 4G LTE was on the table at one point. 3D was nowhere to be found on the phone we saw saw in New York City yesterday, though, which instead sported the same 720p  SuperLCD 2 panel as the One X.

UK Motorola RAZR MAXX pre-order price emerges

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 09:52 AM PDT

Android Central

The Motorola RAZR MAXX is coming to the UK and Europe, without the battery-guzzling LTE radios of the Verizon version, but complete with the gianormous 3300mAh battery. Today British retailer Clove Technology give us the first indication of when we'll be able to get hold of the RAZR MAXX in the UK, and how much cash we'll be expected to part with.

Clove expects to stock the RAZR MAXX from mid-May, and lists a pre-order price of £359 (~$570) without VAT, or £430.80 including VAT. So it's clear that if you want the privilege of getting multiple days' usage on a single charge, you'll be expected to pay a significant premium over the the original GSM RAZR. That device currently sells for around £380 including VAT off-contract.

Pricing concerns aside, we're interested to see how long a plain old GSM/HSPA device on the MAXX's substantial battery pack. If anyone's interested in importing it into the US, the GSM RAZR MAXX's specs indicate it supports HSPA on 850 and 1900MHz, meaning it'll work on AT&T's 3G and "4G" network.

The EVO 4G LTE isn't the HTC One X — it might be better

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 07:40 AM PDT

Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

"But I wanted the HTC One X!"

So we've noticed. But here's the deal, Sprint fans. You're getting the EVO 4G LTE. The Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE. And you know what? It might actually be better than the One X.

Crazy talk, I know. But think about it. No, wait. First, go back and read our HTC One X review. Now let's think about it. How much of the EVO 4G LTE (or the E4GLTE for not-so short) is exactly in line -- on paper, anyway -- with the One X? Quite a bit. And, more important, it's in line with features of the One X about which we're still shouting from the rooftops.

And it doesn't stop there. Consider:

  • Both have a 4.7-inch Super LCD2 display. It's gorgeous.
  • Both have 720x1280 resolution. Beat that.
  • Both have the Qualcomm S4 processor at 1.5 GHz. (Which, by the way, really isn't "slower" than the Tegra 3 variant because it has half the cores.)
  • Both have HTC's excellent new camera and app.
  • Both have Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
  • Both have Sense 4.
  • Both have Beats Audio.
  • Both get you 25-gigabytes of online storage from Dropbox free for two years.

But, no. It's still not the One X.

Travel app Hipmunk searches for flights, hotels around your schedule with new calendar integration

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 07:39 AM PDT

HipmunkHipmunk

Listen up, road warriors. Searching for travel on your phone just got load easier. Hipmunk this morning announced an update that brings calendar integration to its already excellent search app. That means when you look for flights, the app knows that you've got a lunch in Sandusky, so don't bother with anything that gets you there at dinner. And it knows that you've got a breakfast meeting downtown, so maybe staying in the Bronx isn't such a hot idea, so let's not bother with hotels there. (We can hear our Brooklyn fans already cheering at that on principle anyway.)

The idea is that flipping back and forth between a calendar app and Hipmunk is a pain, and this update takes care of that. Meetings that conflict with flights show up on the screen. And the locations of events are shown alongside hotel listings. Invaluable stuff.

The calendar integration includes Google Calendar, Outlook and iCal, which should cover, oh, just about everyone. We've got download links and the full presser after th e break.

Motorola DEFY MINI announced for Greece

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 06:15 AM PDT

Android Central

Motorola has announced that the DEFY MINI will be available in Greece in mid-April.  This follows their announcement that it will also launch in Italy this month, and has already been released in Brazil.  Spec-wise, this is a decidedly mid-range phone, but for someone that needs something durable it's a smart way to go.  As a reminder, it's packing a 600MHz processor, 512MB RAM, a 3MP rear camera, VGA front-facing camera, and has a 3.2" Gorilla Glass display.  There's also dust and water resistance, much like it's larger sibling, the DEFY.  We had a little time with this at CES, and it appears to be a solid mid-range offering for Motorola.

Motorola launch 3G versions of Xoom 2 and Xoom 2 Media Edition in the UK

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 06:05 AM PDT

Android Central

The Motorola Xoom 2 has been with us in the UK for a few months now, albeit only in WiFi only flavor. Today though, Motorola has made available the 3G + WiFi variants of both the Xoom 2 and the smaller Xoom 2 Media Edition

Available online and in-store from the Carphone Warehouse from today, there has also been a small price cut on the WiFi only versions at that retailer. Prices now start from £299.99 for the Media Edition WiFi only. The 3G versions are priced at £399.99 for the Media Edition, and £449.99 for the 10.1-inch Xoom 2.

The Xoom 2 is still shipping with Android 3.2, which in this day and age could put some potential buyers off, especially when you consider the astronomical price tag. Nevertheless it's still a pretty solid tablet. If 3G is all you've been waiting on, then wait no longer.

Motorola Motoluxe launching in Hungary this month

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 06:03 AM PDT

Android Central

Hot on the heels of the Motoluxe announcement for Poland comes word from Motorola that the Motoluxe will be available in Hungary this month, too.  This mid-range device lacks the dust and water resistance of the DEFY MINI, but it does have a larger display at 4" and slightly heftier battery.  We saw it at CES, and came away with a reasonably positive impression of what Motorola has done here.  Yeah, it's another Gingerbread phone, but what are you gonna do.  Gingerbread is still good enough, and Motorola has put Motoblur on top of this to improve ease of use.  It'll be available on T-Mobile Hungary in April for 79 900 HUF.

CyanogenMod introduces new mascot: Cid

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 05:48 AM PDT

Cid

After a long run with skateboarding Bugdroid "Andy" as their mascot, the team behind popular custom firmware CyanogenMod has unveiled a new robotic character to carry the CM banner forward. His name is Cid, and he's the little robot guy you see in the image above.

Cid -- a play on CID, or CyanogenMod ID -- is the result of the CM developers inviting fans to submit character designs over the past few weeks, and he's based on a creation by CM fan Caio Alves. Cid is a little more humanoid than Android's well-established Bugdroid character. Alves says he wanted the design to feel like "an evolution of what we had before", adding "it's a huge challenge to try to evolve something people know and love."

In an official blog post, the CyanogenMod team says it wants its new mascot to embody the idea of CM being more than just "stock Android on a zillion devices". This ties in with the devs' recent efforts to establish their work as a stand-alone OS based on Android, rather than just another custom ROM.

So as CyanogenMod 9 development continues, we'll be seeing a lot more of Cid. Hit the source link for more background on how Cid was brought to life.

HTC One X and One S go on sale in Europe

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 03:41 AM PDT

Shut up and take my money!

It seems like just days since we were at Mobile World Congress getting our grubby paws on the HTC One line for the first time. But today the series' two leading handsets, the HTC One X and One S, have officially launched, meaning you can walk into a store with a few hundred of your favorite currency and leave with the HTC One of your choice.

In the UK, O2, Three, Orange and Vodafone are taking orders for both devices online, and in brick-and-mortar stores. T-Mobile plans to begin offering the One X and One S today too, but it looks like they haven't updated the site yet. If you'd prefer to buy one of HTC's new handsets outright, then SIM-free prices for the One X are around £480 in the UK and €600 in the eurozone. For the One S, it's £420 and €490 respectively.

Be sure to check out our definitive review of the One X, and our preview of the One S for more details on what to expect from both flavors of HTC One. If you've already picked yours up, hit the comments and let us know how you're getting on!

Late-night poll: Did the HTC EVO 4G LTE meet your expectations?

Posted: 05 Apr 2012 12:17 AM PDT

EVO 4G LTE

Today was a pretty big day for Sprint and HTC, they announced their newest LTE (soon to be LTE anyway) phone, and one a lot of folks have been waiting for. Of course we're talking about the EVO 4G LTE. The phone had some pretty big shoes to fill, coming at a time when the contracts of people who bought the original EVO 4G are up for renewal. We got a bit of advance info about what to expect, and save for the battery and the screen tech, our tip was spot on -- on the inside this beast is the basic specs of the HTC One X, but outside it's all EVO. Bold.

But is it too bold? I'm seeing people on both sides of that fence. To me, I like what Sprint has done here. The EVO 4G LTE (and we're going to have to think of a way to shorten that name) is Sprint's new baby. They should have made it their own, and they did. A mix of soft-touch coating, aluminum, bright red, and a two-tone back make this one stand out in a crowd. When you see someone using it on the train, or at the mall, you'll know it's the new EVO.

There's also the matter of the non-removable battery. For some, it's not an issue -- grab a portable charger and go. But for others, no removable battery means no buy. I get both sides, and it's something to consider. I think I could deal with it and be fine, but you may not. It's all good.

So what say you? Are you feeling the newest EVO and it's unique look? Or are you a bit let-down that it's changed so much from the One X? Or did the battery situation put you off? Vote in tonight's poll, then let us know why in the comments.

Another day, another Instagram update

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 09:59 PM PDT

Android Central

After finally being released for Android Instagram understandably had some bugs to squash.  Later that day Version 1.0.1 fixed compatibility with certain cameras (it notably did NOT fix compatibility with the HTC One X).  A little over 24 hours since that update hit we have another update.  This time the changelog is a little more specific, though, which is good.  It means that the developers are paying attention to bug reports and are working quickly to fix them.  The HTC One X, though, is still not supported.  Maybe they haven't received enough bug reports about it yet.  Show your support for #teamandroid and be sure to hit the forums to share your Instagram username.

Google Play Books updated for Froyo and Gingerbread with new UI and 3D page-turn animations

Google Play Books

Seems like today is a good day for updates. Google has now rolled out the latest version of Google Play Books to the Google Play Store and as noted in the change log, this will be a good release for anyone still using Froyo or Gingerbread as it adds a new UI and 3D page animation. Other changes in this update include In-book search when off-line, ability to add a home screen shortcut for a single book and now the screen will stay lit when using text-to-speech. The update is live now; you can jump past the break for the download.
