Google+ For Android Updated With Hashtags and Link Previews

Today, the Google+ app for Android was updated in the Play Store bring a few notable improvements (besides the usual bug fixes and improved stability). Bringing it closer to the desktop web version, the Android app now has improved sharing features for sharing links from other apps. Just like on the web version, users can now view a web snippets or previews when sharing links inside the app. Also added was support for hashtags but please — use them sparingly. The last thing we need are statuses #hashtagging #every #word #in #the #sentence, something that’s plagued Instagram as of late. Proper hashtag etiquette says a hashtag is to be used as a phrase or one word conclusion to the status you’re posting. For example: “Ate a triple, bacon Krispy Kreme cheeseburger today. #YOLO.” Now get out there, and have some fun!

CEO Larry Page Says Google Is Focused On Low-Priced Android Tablets – Confirms Nexus Tab?

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 05:34 PM PDT

Earlier today Google had their quarterly earnings call in which they reported better than expected revenue. The Big G managed to rake in a cool $10.65 billion, with a net income around $2.89 billion and a $50 billion cash pile for use in acquisitions.

But it wasn’t all dollars and cents. During the earnings call, CEO Larry page might have let the cat out of the bag, confirming suspicions that Google would be releasing a low-cost, affordable Android tab for the masses. Page said during the call:

“There has been a lot of success on some lower priced tablets that run Android. Maybe not the full Google version of Android, but we definitely have a belief that there is going to be a lot of success at the lower end of the market as well, with lower priced products that will be very significant. And it’s definitely an area we think is important and are quite focused on.”

Amazon has long been one of Google’s biggest rivals and since their successful, rock-bottom priced tablet hit the market, they stuck it to Google, using Android as a base, but removing everything “Google” about the OS. Well, Google has definitely been watching, and if there’s going to be a smash hit low-cost tablet, Google want’s to make sure it carries their branding.

Current rumors are pointing towards a July release for the Nexus tablet and judging by the comments on this site, Android fans have already set their money aside to make this their next/first Android tablet (myself included).

Project Glass for Those of us Who Already Have Glass

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 03:30 PM PDT

One of the biggest questions when Project Glass, Google’s vision of the future of wearable smart technology, was revealed was regarding those of us who are already legally blind: how will we be able to use Project Glass with our existing eye wear? Well, they aren’t promising anything, but they did give us a quick look at how an attachable accessory could look over someone’s pair of glasses. Too much? Personally, I wouldn’t mind it. The original pair already looked very unobtrusive to me, and this accessory seems even more sleek and cool on top of a pair of frames. Let’s hope this entire project comes to fruition. Barnes & Noble Simple Touch GlowLight Announced, Available for $140

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 02:26 PM PDT

Barnes & Noble have just announced a very interesting device. It’s the Barnes & Noble Simple Touch that users have been enjoying for some time, but they’ve just announced a variant called “GlowLight.”

The GlowLight illuminates the e-Ink display to allow you to read in the dark. While a clip-on light might have done the trick for some users, this solution is sure to cut down on cumbersome reading and evenly distribute light across the slate.

Even with the added functionality, they’ve somehow made it 5% lighter. You can still read for over a month with GlowLight enabled, and two months without. There’s no wait to get it as it’s available right now for over $139. Head over to their site to get started and read on for full press details.

Barnes & Noble Introduces NOOK Simple Touch™ with GlowLight:

World’s First and Only E Ink® Reader That Lets You Read in the Dark

Amazing In Bed and at the Beach - Like Two Readers In One for Only $139

GlowLight Patent-Pending Technology Delivers on E Ink Customers’ Top Request,

Ends Bedtime Reading Debate - When One Partner Wants to Read
and the Other Wants to Sleep

Extra-Long Battery Life: Read for Over One Month with GlowLight On

Pre-Order Today for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Graduation

New York, New York - April 12, 2012 -Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the leading retailer of content, digital media and educational products, today introduced NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight, the world’s first E Ink device with patent-pending lighting technology that eliminates the number-one problem couples have in bed - having their sleep interrupted, or being prevented from falling asleep, when their partner reads with the light on. With a soft, adjustable glow, GlowLight gives bedtime readers just the right amount of light for reading, without disturbing a sleepy spouse. Like having two Readers in one, the first and only Reader designed to let E Ink customers read in the dark is equally amazing at the beach, with a paper-like reading experience, even in the bright sun. This revolutionary device is the first to combine the most advanced and fastest E Ink display with a precise infrared touchscreen, built-in anti-glare screen for reading in any lit environment, and an evenly distributed and adjustable light for reading in the dark. NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight is also the lightest NOOK ever, with a long-lasting battery for over one month of reading on a single charge, with the light on. Customers can pre-order the newest addition to the award-winning NOOK portfolio immediately for just $139 at www.nook.com and in Barnes & Noble stores. NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight will be in stores and homes starting in early May, a perfect gift for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and graduations.

For people who love to read, E Ink’s paper-like readability, no-glare screen and long battery life have made it a favorite and nearly perfect device choice, with one exception: reading in bed or other low-light environments. And according to a recent Barnes & Noble national survey of adult readers, reading in bed is what 64 percent do on a regular basis, so it’s not surprising that the number-one request from E Ink customers is the ability to read in the dark to avoid bothering a significant other.

The Brightest Innovation in Reading

Barnes & Noble created breakthrough GlowLight technology, an innovative lighting solution optimized for low-light conditions, never before seen on an E Ink display and not available on any Kindle. NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight delivers uniform light across an E Ink display, creating a better nighttime reading experience than LCD. GlowLight turns on instantly and adjusts easily with a touch, so customers can control the amount of light, whether in a dimly lit or pitch dark room. NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight is the perfect peacekeeper for the half of survey respondents who would read more in bed if it didn’t interfere with their partners’ sleep.

"To date, readers have had to compromise: either buying black-and-white E Ink reading devices to optimize their outdoor reading or color LCD devices to be able to read at night in bed with the light off. NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight is like two Readers in one," said William J. Lynch, Chief Executive Officer of Barnes & Noble. "With our new GlowLight technology and the most advanced E Ink display available, we’ve created the most versatile, high-utility Reader ever; as exceptional for reading in the darkest bedroom as on the brightest beach. At only $139, NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight provides customers an amazing value and is the only device of its kind in the world."

Resolving the Bedtime Reading Debate

For as long as there have been beds, and books, there’s been a common clash between couples at bedtime: Lights on, to read? Or off, to sleep? "The Barnes & Noble NOOK Bedtime Reading Debate," a survey conducted March 1-5, 2012, polled 1,358 adult readers across the country about their reading habits, and shed new light on this age-old challenge.

  • Bed Heads: Approximately two-thirds (64 percent) of people polled read in bed, and nearly a quarter read in bed between five and seven days a week.
    • People who own Readers are among the most likely to read in bed (72 percent) and are more likely to read in bed on a weekly basis than tablet owners

(61 percent vs. 54 percent).

  • The Gender Divide: While reading in bed is a top pick for both genders, there’s a distinct divide when it comes to second place: women are likelier than men to read outdoors (40 percent vs. 25 percent), and men more frequently read in the bathroom (41 percent vs. 26 percent for women).
  • The Light/Dark Debate: 77 percent of survey respondents say they or their partner requires light for their bedtime reading, although nearly 90 percent say their ideal sleep environment is completely dark.
    • Men are far more likely than women to report their significant other disrupts their sleep by using a light to read in bed.
  • Keeping Peace: 50 percent of respondents say either they or their partner would read more in bed if it didn’t affect the other person’s sleep.
  • Sleepus Interruptus: A partner using a light to read in bed was deemed most disruptive by respondents - even more than a frisky partner’s "midnight moves."
    • 31 percent of respondents noted that a partner’s use of a light to read in bed interfered with their sleep or prevented them from falling asleep, while 20 percent noted that romantic overtures did the same.
  • Perturbed Partners: Nearly half (42 percent) of survey respondents have gone to sleep annoyed because their significant other was reading with a light on.
  • Night Flight, Not Fight: 42 percent of people surveyed say they or their partner has physically relocated to another room to read to not disturb the partner who wanted to sleep, as most also agreed this was the best way to "keep the peace."
    • The "lights-on" breach of bediquette leads many to throw in the towel when it comes to sleep with flipping on the TV, leaving the room to read or staying up to read themselves the most frequent alternatives.

Lightweight and Ultra Portable

At under 7 ounces, NOOK Simple Touch with GlowLight is Barnes & Noble’s lightest NOOK ever and 5 percent lighter than the highly acclaimed NOOK Simple Touch. The device’s ergonomic soft-touch design makes it super comfortable to hold in just one hand - perfect for staying up all night in bed with a can’t-put-it-down novel, or for carrying everywhere. Customers can also personalize their devices with an exclusive array of stylish and protective accessories.

Google Reports Q1’12 Earnings; Earns $10.65 Billion in Revenue

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 01:49 PM PDT

Google has today reported their financial results from the first quarter of 2012. Early signs are positive with Google earning $10.65 billion in revenue, up 24% from the same quarter in 2011. Net income was a respectable $2.89 billion. Google only missed Wall Street’s estimates by a hair so it’s unlikely they’ll hurt much in the market.

They also have close to $50 billion in cash on hand, meaning they have a lot of dough to play around with in the acquisition market. The earnings call is ongoing and we’ll be updating this post with any juicy tidbits to come from it. Developing…

Sprint’s EVO 4G LTE Visits the FCC

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 01:34 PM PDT

Sprint’s latest flagship device has trotted on down to the FCC and has been approved by the regulatory body. Of course, an FCC approval doesn’t reveal much – we already know which radios will be inside, and they don’t really tell us anything we don’t already know. Well, we do have some rough figures of the box and it’s not everyday that we get that, but we get nothing but the position of the barcode and label. Anyway, if this sort of stuff excites you then be sure to turn your attention to its FCC listing.

If Anyone Believes This is the Nexus S 4G, I have an Oceanfront Home in Idaho to Sell You

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 12:30 PM PDT

Because this most certainly isn’t the Nexus S 4G. Nice one, Sprint. Oh, but you can keep that “free” price tag on there whenever you decide to launch the Galaxy Nexus. [Thanks Zachary!]

HTC Incredible 4G Press Render Surfaces

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 12:23 PM PDT

While this isn’t the first time we’ve seen the HTC Incredible 4G (Wednesday stole that honor), this is the first time we’ve seen an official press render of the device. PocketNow procured the goods and it looks like what we pretty much already saw, except it’s a lot more “official.”

Nothing’s changed since yesterday – you can still see those 3 capacitive buttons and the red protruding power button, as well as the 4 inch display that will serve as the window to all that the device has to offer. It’ll be here with HTC Sense 4.0 and Android 4.0, as well as LTE radios and likely Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 processor.

Dark Legends MMO for Android Launches

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 11:03 AM PDT

Spacetime Studios has come to the Google Play Store with what looks to be another possible hit. The third in their “Legend” series, Dark Legends is a cross-platform massively multiplayer online game that allows users to play in the game world with those on both their platform and others’. It’s the first MMO to launch simultaneously on mobile (Google Play Store) and PC (Google Chrome Web Store).

Set in a gritty modern-day urban environment in which humans are aware of vampires’ existence, players assume the role of a recently sired vampire who must battle to survive in a world which fears and hates their kind. In the struggle, players must face gangs of well-armed humans, hordes of the undead, packs of werewolves, covens of warlocks and legions of demons.

Sounds pretty good to me. The premise should make for interesting gameplay and a lot  of different directions to go as far as expansion packs go. The game will be exclusive to Android for two weeks, and iOS users will be able to join you after that period. It’s free to play so jump right in and let us know what you think. Read on for full press details.

Spacetime Studios Teams Up with Google on

World’s First MMO to Launch Simultaneously on Mobile and Desktop

Dark Legends Now Available Exclusively On Google Play and Chrome Web Store

AUSTIN, Texas - April 12, 2012 - Spacetime Studios, working closely with Google, is introducing the world’s first MMO to launch simultaneously on mobile and desktop platforms. The mobile MMO Dark Legends is now available exclusively for a two week period on Google Play for Android devices and on the Chrome Web Store for PC, Mac and Linux.

The commercial launch of Dark Legends across both mobile and desktop simultaneously is another industry first by Spacetime Studios and furthers their goal to create a ubiquitous social gaming experience. The company’s Legends series are the only 3D MMOs in the world that allow people to play the same game together on desktop computers, smart phones and tablets.

Gary Gattis, CEO of Spacetime Studios, feels recent moves by Google to unify the gaming and social experience across its platform ecosystem are a powerful validation of his own company’s long standing corporate mission to allow people to play with anyone, anywhere, anytime.

"Google Play and the Chrome Web Store allow us to upload and update our online, multiplayer games instantly. Their immediate and unified environment fits perfectly with Spacetime’s ability to push global content to our suite of games on-the-fly across mobile and desktop." said Gattis. "We’re both at the forefront of creating cross-platform gameplay that connects players in a much deeper online experience, anywhere and on any device."

Dark Legends is the third title in the highly popular Legends franchise of mobile and desktop games. The first two titles, Pocket Legends and Star Legends: The Blackstar Chronicles, are the world’s largest mobile MMOs with more than seven million downloads.

Dark Legends is free to download and play. The game features optional microtransactions and virtual currency that enhance the play experience with vanity items, health packs and premium revives.

After the exclusive period the game will also be available for iOS devices.

April 22 looking likely for Sprint’s Samsung Galaxy Nexus launch

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 08:31 AM PDT

Earlier this week we received word that promotional signage would begin going up for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus at Sprint starting early next week. A new leak points to a launch not long after. If the latest report pans out, April 22nd could be one big day for Sprint’s fledgling LTE network.

With the LG Viper 4G LTE already set to launch on that day, it appears the Galaxy Nexus could join it. Taking advantage of the new speeds is a different story altogether. Sprint has only powered up its new network in a handful of test markets and a wider rollout isn’t set to occur until June. This leaves at least a month’s gap between the availability of the Galaxy Nexus and Viper 4G and the launch of the network they are meant to run on. So is this a calculated risk or a setup for failure? Perhaps Sprint plans to surprise us with a few early LTE markets to coincide with the device launches.

Either way, it looks like April 22nd is the date to watch if you are hoping to get your hands on an LTE Galaxy Nexus that doesn’t reside on Verizon’s network.

Dolphin Browser HD 8.0 brings redesigned Sonar and Gesture support, new menu bar

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 08:21 AM PDT

Dolphin Browser HD received an update to version 8.0 in the Google Play Store today, enhancing the way users interact with the popular third-party web browser. Sticking with the gesture concept, the folks at Dolphin have redesigned the method of non-text input. The focus has been shifted to the new voice-based Sonar feature introduced in previous versions of Dolphin Browser HD, combining the two into a simple interface and setting voice search as the default.

An menu bar overhaul make accessing bookmarks and add-ons easier than ever, and  context dialog has been assigned to a long-press on the browser page. Options include the ability to select text, search within a page, and close the current tab. Behind the scenes stability and performance have been improved.

As always, Dolphin Browser HD remains a free download. You can grab the latest version from the Google Play Store now.

Toshiba Excite 10 visits the FCC headed for May release

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 07:56 AM PDT

The 10-inch entry in Toshiba’s new lineup of Ice Cream Sandwich tablets will be the first to hit shelves, and likewise is the first to find its way to the FCC. The quad-core Toshiba Excite 10 has been getting its pre-requisite certifications en route to a May release, when it will be available starting at $449.99 for the 16GB model. The tablet utilizes a Tegra 3 chipset coupled with 1GB of RAM, a 5MP rear and 1.3MP front-facing camera, and plenty of connectivity.

The Excite 10 is fairly standard otherwise. A 7-inch model will feature an AMOLED display while a 13.3-inch slate gets points for utilizing an unusual screen size.

Leak outs April 20 release date for HTC One X at Rogers

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 07:09 AM PDT

Rogers already has the HTC One X up for pre-order, but a specific release date for the phone has not be announced. The assumption has been that it will launch before the end of the month, and a new leak suggests that April 20th is the date to watch. Rogers will receive the same LTE version of the One X that will come to AT&T in the US, which features a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor compared to the quad-core Tegra 3 chip of the international HSPA+ version. The handset will be priced at $169.99 on a three-year contract.
