Motorola looking for participants to test forthcoming Photon 4G update

Posted: 26 Apr 2012 03:46 PM PDT

Motorola doesn’t have the greatest track record when it comes to timely software updates. The Photon 4G in particular has been somewhat neglected since it launched however the good news is that things could be about to change. Motorola are planning a soak test for the device and are looking for 1,000 volunteers to lend a hand.

4/25/2012

Motorola and Sprint are happy to announce a future pre-release* update opportunity for PHOTON 4G, before it is officially released to all customers. We are recruiting 1,000 PHOTON 4G owners to test and provide feedback on a future update.

Please register for the Motorola Feedback Network to be considered.

Motorola and Sprint Community Managers

There’s no news at this time as to what the update contains however an update of any kind can only be good news, fingers crossed for the belated arrival of ICS! Perhaps this is a sign of things to come, you would hope that following being bought out by Google that Motorola would look to spruce up its update process.

Hit the link below if you’d like to sign up for the soak test.

Prototype Google Phone resembles a Blackberry, was set to arrive with a $9.99 unlimited data plan

Posted: 26 Apr 2012 03:19 PM PDT

Oh how different things could have been. What you’re looking at above is a prototype image of what Google had in mind for the first ever Android phone back in 2006. As the court battle between Google and Oracle wages on, these interesting little titbits are surfacing from the courtroom via some official documents that Google released. It’s definitely interesting to note that the early prototypes resemble a Blackberry far more than an iPhone, perhaps adding some substance to the argument that Google changed its strategy after the success of the original iPhone.

Another interesting story to surface is that Google intended to subsidise a $9.99 unlimited data plan in partnership with T-Mobile as part of the launch strategy. It’s fair to say that HTC’s G1 was certainly an improvement on the original design although I suspect one or two of us would bite Google’s hands off for an unlimited data plan for less than $10!

Would you have bought this back in 2008? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Samsung Galaxy S III likely to come in Dual-core and Quad-core flavours

Posted: 26 Apr 2012 02:47 PM PDT

It’s less than 24 hours since Samsung broke the news that the next Galaxy would launch with the Quad0core Exynos processor and already reports are coming in that there is a high probability of a Dual-core version too. It’s no secret that the Nvidia Tegra 3 Quad-core processor doesn’t play nicely with LTE networks hence HTC’s decision to opt for a Dual-core Snapdragon S4 chip for the US model of the One X. Could it be that Samsung’s latest and greatest chip will also present similar problems? The Korea Times certainly seems to think so as it recently got a tip-off from an unnamed Samsung exec that whilst the new Exynos chip will be on board internationally, the US model may feature the Snapdragon S4. The mystery exec was quoted as saying "Samsung plans to release its Galaxy S3 smartphone according to different specification and different markets. For European consumers, it will use 3G and the company's own quad-core mobile APs, while its own solution that combines LTE, 3G and quad-core mobile APs will be used in the Korean version. But only in the United States, will Samsung use Qualcomm chips."

I wouldn’t be too hasty about stewing over the lack of Exynos chip in the Galaxy S III (if the rumours are true of course) The Snapdragon S4 has proven on a number of occasions that it’s more than capable of standing toe-to-toe with the Quad-core giants. Will the choice of chip influence your decision on whether or not you’ll be picking up Samsung’s next uber-phone? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Verizon Reportedly Has Summer And Fall Roadmap Set For 2012

Posted: 26 Apr 2012 02:40 PM PDT

While Verizon always has a stacked Android lineup, it has to ensure it has the latest and greatest devices by keeping things fresh and up to date. To that end, it looks like Big Red is all set for its Summer and Fall lineup for 2012. For starters, it does indeed plan on carrying a version of the anticipated Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone, which we’ll assume will be a 4G LTE variant and will likely arrive this summer. As a follow-up, Verizon does indeed plan on carrying yet additional Motorola DROID RAZR models, perhaps models that have a bigger screen in HD and no capacative buttons? Finally, Verizon does indeed plan on carrying a phablet-type device, but not from Samsung. Instead, HTC is reportedly working on a device with a monstrous 5-inch screen with 1080P display, a quad-core Krait CPU and an Adreno 320 GPU, HTC Sense 5 and a Scribe pen.

Well, it looks like those of you needing to upgrade your phones this year will have at least a few good options of throwing down some of your hard earned coins. You folks excited at the idea of what’s to come from Verizon?

Phosphor Games redefines mobile gaming with the release of Dark Meadow: The Pact for Tegra 3 devices

Posted: 26 Apr 2012 09:00 AM PDT

NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 is flexing its muscles today with the launch of Dark Meadow: The Pact from Phosphor Games Studio. Dark Meadow: The Pact utilizes the Unreal Engine 3 and is a first-person action/adventure game that will redefine the mobile gaming space.

In this game you awaken in Montclair Hospital with no memory of who you are or how you even got there. You have one friend, an old man that has been stuck in this hospital for a long long time. According to him you must destroy the beautiful witch in order to escape. Of course this witch won’t be your only problem as you need to deal with ghoulish creatures along the way. For weapons, you will have a cross bow and a sword, both of which feature gesture controls. You will utilize a “pull-back’ swipe for the cross bow and the sword features a “slashing” gesture.

Dark Meadow: The Pact has already been available on iOS, but Phosphor Games wanted to bring it to the next level. Fortunately NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 featuring 4-PLUS-1 quad-core technology allowed them to feature detailed enhancements such as higher polygon counts, animated textures, water effects, and dynamic particle effects. You can see the differences in the following images:

"Android gamers have been clamoring for the game ever since we announced its development during the 2011 Spike TV Video Game Awards," said Chip Sineni, Director at Phosphor Games Studios. "We are excited that the day has arrived and that we've been able to continue improving the game – especially the integration of the Tegra 3 processor – while maintaining a free to play model."

To top it all off, you can play Dark Meadow: The Pact in English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Russian, and Brazilian Portuguese. Folks, this is an amazing game and one you won’t want to miss. It’s available right now in the Google Play Store and the TegraZone app. In addition, it’s FREE to play. For those of you that don’t have a Tegra 3 device, you will be happy to know that Phosphor Games plans on bringing it to more devices soon. Also look for a hands on review from our own Stacy Bruce soon.

Acclaimed Mobile Adventure Game Gets Visual Upgrade With Integration of New NVIDIA Tegra 3 Quad-Core Processor

CHICAGO, April 26, 2012 – Continuing to redefine the mobile gaming landscape with console-quality graphics and deep narrative, Phosphor Games today released the highly anticipated Android version of Dark Meadow: The Pact.

Free to play now on Android mobile devices equipped with the new NVIDIA® Tegra® 3 4-PLUS-1 quad-core mobile processor, Dark Meadow: The Pact takes advantage of Tegra 3's quad-core CPU and GeForce GPU to further enhance the game and deliver an unparalleled visual experience.

Developed utilizing the acclaimed Unreal Engine 3, The Dark Meadow is a stunning first-person, action/adventure game in which players fight to escape a nightmare world filled with fantastical creatures bent on destroying them. You awake in a hospital, uncertain of how you arrived there or why. An old man warns of a beautiful witch whose minions roam the halls seeking to kill the living. It is only when the witch is destroyed that you will be released from this unrelenting torment.

As you explore the photo-realistic world, you need both your crossbow for ranged combat as well as your sword for in-close, melee combat. Gesture-based "pull back and fire," as well as slashing combat, will be instantly recognizable to touch screen players. And node-based movement through the world makes navigation simple yet compelling.

Role-playing game mechanics enhance the exploration, as a wide variety of items are secreted throughout the world – from hidden scraps of paper that reveal the mystery of your imprisonment, to money that can be used to purchase better equipment and weapons.

Dark Meadow: The Pact is currently free to play in English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Russian, and Brazilian Portuguese, on both iOS and Tegra 3-equipped Android platforms, with additional Android platform support scheduled for the months ahead.

Dark Meadow: The Pact is now available on Google Play and is featured on the TegraZone app, NVIDIA's free app that showcases the best games optimized for the Tegra processor.

Samsung marketing gone wild in the Outback

Posted: 26 Apr 2012 08:27 AM PDT

From patent warfare to advertisement judo, the battle between Samsung and Apple has been epic to say the least. This time, it appears that Sammy has made their next move at an Apple Store in Sydney, Australia. Comical video blogger Nate “Blunty” Burr was on the scene and caught all the action on tape. This latest tactic is part of Samsung’s “Wake Up” campaign aimed at iSheep everywhere while creating hype around their highly anticipated Galaxy S3 announcement next week. Check out the video below for a good laugh!

Apparent Samsung GT-I9300 Service Manual Sketch Leaks Out

Posted: 26 Apr 2012 07:07 AM PDT

And the beat goes on with the Samsung Galaxy S III news. We’ve seen benchmarks for the upcoming device and now know it will feature a quad-core processor, but we now may have something just as significant to share with you all. Well-regarded Sammy blog SamMobile has obtained what it claims to be an actual scan from the service manual of the device. If you look carefully, the sketch outline of the device pictured seems to match up with what we’ve seen here… and here… oh and here in a silhouette as well.

Accompanying the outline of the anticipated smartphone are details of the internals. The specs match up with what we’ve previously heard about for the most part including an HSPA+ radio and 1080P video recording. However, you’ll note that this apparent mockup of the Galaxy S III device is clocked at 1.5GHz as opposed to 1.4GHz (per Sammy’s Exynos announcement), an 8MP camera as opposed to a 12MP camera and a 4.8-inch screen as opposed to a 4.7-inch screen. In addition, there’s a home button on this device, which goes against our previous sightings where we’d seen soft keys on the screen. Perhaps Samsung may have more than one variation of the upcoming Galaxy S III smartphone being developed? It’s more than possible considering it has multiple variations of the Galaxy S II for example.

Despite SamMobile’s reputation for obtaining accurate information in the past, this latest leak as with most leaks shouldn’t be taken too seriously. The only thing certain of the device we do that it will feature a fast— really fast Exynos processor. Until then Samsung will do everything in its power to stay tight-lipped and keep us in suspense until next week’s unveiling. I mean after all, it’s no fun if we know everything about the device before it’s formally unveiled, is it?

Samsung Galaxy S3 specs exposed by AnTuTu benchmark

Posted: 26 Apr 2012 07:06 AM PDT

It seems that the popular AnTuTu benchmark database has stored some highly classified info regarding Samsung’s upcoming new Galaxy. The image above appears to list the complete specs list for the Samsung Galaxy SIII (note that it’s not Galaxy S3). Assuming that this is not faked, the info appears to be spot on with what has been whispered across the web for the last few months. From the 4.7 inch screen size to the recently announced Exynos quad-core processor, these specs look to take a big bite out of the competition. Of course in one week, all rumors will be squashed and only the truth will prevail. Stay tuned to Talk Android!
