New Instagram Update Brings Tablet Support

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 05:01 PM PDT

Instagram just received yet another update and this time brings support for tablets. If you were trying to access the popular photo community on your slate prior to this update you were forced to use a blown-up version of the smartphone app. Wasn’t very pretty. Now you can have a much cleaner experience and if you are the type who like to use your tablet as a camera, well, you now have that option too. One thing though, you will be stuck using your tablet in portrait mode when inside the app.

Along with tablet support you will also get a few random bug fixes and the the option to move the app to your SD card. Hit either link below to snag the update.

Samsung Files New Trademarks For The Galaxy Sire, Perx And Lift Smartphones

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 11:40 AM PDT

It looks like we could possibly have new Samsung Galaxy devices on the way. We’ve just heard that Samsung applied for trademarks with the following names: Sire (Serial Number: 85585397), the Galaxy Perx (Serial Number:85585381) and the Galaxy Lift (Serial Number: 85585386). In addition, Sammy clearly identify the goods and services with the United States Patent and Trademark Office as “mobile phones, smartphones”.

While it’s more than likely we’ll be seeing some new smartphones on the way, Samsung has naturally made no announcement on these upcoming phones yet and will likely stay mum for the time being. Stay tuned with Talk Android for further news on each of the potentially new additions to the Galaxy line of smartphones.

Was That a 3D version of the EVO 4G LTE in HTC’s ‘Making Of Video’?

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 08:36 AM PDT

Could there be a 3D version of the new HTC EVO 4G LTEin our future? If you look at this “Get to know the HTC EVO 4G LTE” video you can see a quick glimpse of a dual camera version of the final product. Clearly HTC isn’t trying to hide anything from us because you can see the device plain as day. This wouldn’t come as complete surprise if it did eventually hit store shelves because the EVO 3D needs a successor too. Who knows, though, this could just end up being another one of their prototypes that ends up in their “could’ve been” pile. Check out the video below to see what the device could potentially look like. It shows up right around the 23 second mark.

What do you guys think? Would HTC sneak an image of an unannounced device into this video?

Google CEO Larry Page Gives 2012 Update For Android, Highlights 850,000 Devices Are Being Activated Daily

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 08:29 AM PDT

Google’s head honcho Larry Page took some time recently to give his formal update on all things Google for 2012, including the Android platform. In an unsurprisingly bright outlook, Page expresses his excitement for Android specifically by sharing how the platform is not only on fire, but:

“ The pace of mobile innovation has never been greater. Over 850,000 devices are activated daily through a network of 55 manufacturers and more than 300 carriers. Android is a tremendous example of the power of partnership, and it just gets better with each version. The latest update, Ice Cream Sandwich, has a beautiful interface that adapts to the form of the device.  Whether it's on a phone or tablet, the software works seamlessly”.

He also adds that Android users are able to do a ton of actions ranging from “searching for something” or “turning your phone into a wallet”. Furthermore, he highlights the ability to access information anywhere and everywhere by stating:

“As devices multiply and usage changes (many users coming online today may never use a desktop machine), it becomes more and more important to ensure that people can access all of their stuff anywhere… so I am excited about products like Gmail and Google Docs that work well across Android and desktop. With Chrome now recently available on Android, switching devices becomes painless, too, because all of your tabs are just there across your desktop and Android. And with Google Play, movies, books, apps, and games are all accessible from the Web or an Android device—no cables, downloading, or syncing required. I think there is a theme here”!

Finally he shares a quick tidbit on the recent acquisition of Motorola Mobility. He shares that Google is “excited about the opportunities to build great devices capitalizing on the tremendous success and growth of Android and Motorola's long history of technological innovation.”

We’re excited too Mr. Page– believe us.

ASUS Set To Further Address GPS Issues With An Upcoming GPS Dongle

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 06:54 AM PDT

Ah yes the ASUS Transformer Prime. The tablet is easily one of the best available, but sadly was plagued with some minor GPS issues and subpar performance. ASUS did make everything good by releasing a much-needed software update, but ASUS is trying to take yet another step to show that it’s a force to be reckoned with in the Android world. It seems that ASUS has been in direct communication with XDA and has stated it:

“Will be releasing a dongle shortly that will address the GPS function and be a fully usable GPS that will lock onto many satellites and keep their lock with wi-fi active”.

Oh and ASUS has pledged this GPS dongle will be ”provided for free” by mid-April. ASUS Transformer owners are certainly a lucky bunch. It almost wants to make you trade up and get a TF Prime just for the cool dongle, doesn’t it? We’re all on the lookout for that dongle ASUS.

GSM Galaxy Nexus develops signal issue following 4.0.4 update

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 06:39 AM PDT

It’s that bitter-sweet moment that follows a lot of OS updates. You boot up for the first time to find all the new features and bug fixes you were hoping to see, all is well in the world. Inevitably, for every 5 or 6 bugs fixed there’s a new one that reveals itself that wasn’t there before, now where’s my pitchfork?

The GSM Galaxy Nexus saw a world wide OTA push of the latest Android 4.0.4 which brought with it some minor improvements such as faster multitasking, a new power-button menu, quicker changing of screen orientation etc however what wasn’t advertised as part of the update was sketchy signal problems. The issue specifically causes a complete loss of signal in otherwise strong signal areas which prevents the ability to make or receive calls and texts. Widespread reports of the issue first surfaced over at the XDA developers forum and have since progressed to a confirmed listed on Google’s support page.

Interestingly I have not personally ran into the problem on my GSM Galaxy Nexus since I updated to 4.0.4 however I am UK based so I’m not sure if that has any significance to the occurrence of the issue. I expect Google will be working round the clock to bring a timely 4.0.5 update that will fix the issue, here’s hoping it doesn’t bring another unexpected gremlin along with it!

You can click the link below to head over to the Google website and report the issue if you’ve been effected by signal loss following the 4.0.4 update.

Lucky Owner Of AT&T HTC One X Prototype May Open Floodgates To Additional “Access” Of The Device

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 06:31 AM PDT

The great thing about the Android platform is the fact it allows us to tinker and modify our devices, despite certain OEMs and carriers making a clear effort to deter us from doing such sinful acts. While HTC has given us some ability to unlock its devices, we do know that some very intelligent and crafty individuals are hard at work trying to make newer HTC devices (and other OEMs for that matter) more accessible to us– the common people, in the meantime. That’s why an anonymous person who has that mouthwatering AT&T HTC One X smartphone is ready to make the device just a little more interesting. Apparently he or she bought a prototype of the smartphone with full S-OFF in the bootloader. While the anonymous person may not be able to do anything on his or her own, the development community is sought upon to try and throw in their two cents on how to crack the additional codes in the phone. Ladies and gents— if the lucky owner and other developers are able to crack the code of the phone, we may just see a new world of potential for the device… sooner than we think. Stay tuned for further developments on this noteworthy story everyone!

Google branded tablet now pushed back to July as a result of design changes

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 06:18 AM PDT

We’ve been hearing rumors of a Google tablet lately, which could be called a Nexus or possibly even the Google Play. Everything seems to point towards ASUS being the manufacturer of choice (ASUS Memo 370T pictured above), and we’ve also heard that Google may sell it on their own from either their own site or possibly the Play Store. We were hoping for a release in May, but the latest reports are now saying it has been pushed back to July due to some design changes. Supposedly Google is hoping with these design changes, they will be able to get the price down from the rumored $249 level. Some are also speculating that the delay is for Jelly Bean, which I think is very unlikely. Unless Jelly Bean is a tablet-only OS (like Honeycomb), I just don’t see it. The rumor specs are still the same: A 7-inch screen and a NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor. If this July release holds, I think it’s just about guaranteed that it will be announced at Google I/O and will most likely be the “Free” gift handed out to attendees.

Google’s own Sergey Brin spotted in the wild sporting Project Glass prototype

Posted: 06 Apr 2012 06:13 AM PDT

Perhaps the future really is now. Just hours after Google gave the world a glimpse of the future with the Project Glass announcement, the augmented reality glasses have already been spotted out in public on none other than Google co-founder Sergey Brin himself. Sergey showed up to the ‘Dining in the Dark’ charity event at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco sporting the prototype that is reportedly in testing right now. Sergey was more than happy to pose for photos and discuss the project however he politely declined any requests for a quick sample of the equipment!

The prototype model appears to look exactly like the images used for the official announcement. They don’t look that different from your average spectacles and appear compact and lightweight. If they function even half as well as the promo video suggests, this could be a huge advance in mobile communications.

We have a whole bunch of questions we’d love to have answered such as when can we get our hands on these and how much will they cost? Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to find out. In the meantime, check out the photos that tech reporter Robert Scoble managed to snap and be sure to let us know your thoughts on Google’s exciting new project.
