Gameloft promised they would bring the highly-anticipated N.O.V.A. 3 to Android in May, and they delivered on the last day of the month. If you want to play the best first-person shooter on Android, then head over to the Google Play Store and give Gameloft $6.99.

Android fans will be pleased to hear that most high-end devices are supported. That includes the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, ASUS Transformer Prime, Droid RAZR, Nexus S, Galaxy Tab 10.1, HTC EVO 4G LTE, and more. Surprisingly, the HTC One X (Tegra 3 and Snapdragon S4 versions) is not currently supported, but I expect Gameloft will be adding it soon.

Highlights of NOVA 3 include:

  • An epic storyline: Humanity finally returns to Earth after years of exile! Fight in 10 immersive levels across the galaxy, from a war-torn Earth to a frozen Volterite city.
  • Multiple weapons and powers: Run, shoot, drive vehicles, and pilot a mech to defeat hordes of enemies.
  • Join 12-player battles in 6 multiplayer modes (Capture the Point, Free-for-All, Capture the Flag, etc.) on 6 different maps.
  • For the first time, multiple allies can jump inside the same vehicle and spread destruction on the battlefield.
  • Discover the new FPS benchmark for graphics and gameplay (real-time shadow & lights, particle system, ragdoll physics, etc.)

If your device supports this game and you are a fan of shooters, I’d highly recommend buying the game right now. Check out all the trailer videos below to see what you are missing out on.

GO Backup wins week 6 of #thenextinstall, 10 new apps try to take its place

Can our community help discover the next great Android app? Welcome to a new experiment called #thenextinstall where we try to see if we can find an Android app in the rough, and boost its installs and exposure to new highs.

Last week our community selected Solid Explorer, one of the nicest file manager we have ever seen on Android. The app is still in beta, but it’s already a great experience that average users can start using right away as their go to file manager. We helped the app surpass 100,000 installs, and I have no doubt it will reach 1 million downloads in the coming months.

Week 6 Winner: GO Backup

This time none of our suggested apps exploded, but GO Backup was the best received and generated the most installs. There are quite a few backup apps out there, but GO Backup is stable, fast, free, and features a simple design. It also features built in support for backing up GO Launcher themes, and has extra options for root users. The GO Dev team is one of the best around, so you can expect this app will receive timely updates that continue to add new features.

If any of the suggested apps look interesting, please check them out and let us know what you think.

AT&T launches cryptic web series Daybreak to promote HTC One X and other devices

daybreak-2012

This afternoon a social media marketing agency offered to send me an AT&T HTC One X if I would check out a “multi-platform story experience about the power of technology and its ability to improve our lives”. I already reviewed the One X, but I was intrigued by this mysterious campaign and figured I could give away the device in another contest.

Enter Daybreak. It turns out AT&T has teamed up with producer Tim Kring (creator of Strange World, Crossing Jordan, Heroes, and Touch) to produce a new online series that debuts tonight at 9 PM ET. It will be directed by Jon Cassar (of 24 fame) and advertising partner BBDO is describing the concept as a “Bourne Identity-type adventure.

The online show follows the story of  Ben Wilkens, an "Everyman" character, who finds himself at the center of a global conspiracy. When he discovers a dodecahedron, an ancient and powerful object, he quickly learns that he must restore the object to its rightful place so that humanity will be able to make its next evolutionary leap forward.

Daybreak will span five episodes, each around 10 minutes, and will be released each Thursday on the Daybreak site, YouTube, and Hulu. Viewers at home will be able to interact with the show using an Android app tied to a site JackBoxers that lets them dive deeper into the weekly missions and unsolved mysteries.

I have no idea if the show will suck, but AT&T has shared just enough details to keep me curious. Tonight I’ll be tuned into the Western Conference Finals as my Spurs look to extend their 20-game winning streak, but I’ll definitely check out Daybreak later on just to see what it’s like.

We have seen a ton of terrible advertisements for Android products, so it will be interesting to see how this branded content performs. Check out the video teaser below and grab the app if you want to play along at home.

Does Daybreak look like a winner?

Sprint has announced via it’s Sprint Community page that the highly-anticipated EVO 4G LTE smartphone will go on sale this Saturday, June 2nd for $199.99. After a customs investigation caused the delay of the May 18th launch of the Sprint One X variant, shipments have picked up enough to have most retail outlets offering the devices this weekend.

The HTC EVO 4G LTE has the following specs:

  • 4.7″ 720p HD display
  • Dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4
  • 8 megapixel rear camera with an f2.0 lens BSI sensor, dedicated imaging chip and HTC's new Image Sense technology
  • 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera
  • 16 GB internal storage, 1GB RAM
  • NFC
  • LTE
  • 2,000 mAh battery
  • HD Voice w/ voice-over LTE

The long wait is over, Sprint fans, as you’ll be able to get your grummy hands on the EVO 4G LTE in just two short days. Now, the waiting game for Sprint’s LTE network can fully begin, which is slated for launch later this quarter, with full rollout expected to be completed by the end of 2013.

Orange UK to get first Intel Medfield-based San Diego in June

Posted: 31 May 2012 10:21 AM PDT

San Diego Medfield

Orange UK have announced this morning that they will be carrying the San Diego, the first European phone with Intel’s Medfield chipset, starting this June 6th. The device will launch as a pay as you go phone for £200 with £10 of credit, or on-contract starting at £15.50 per month for a two-year agreement. The San Diego is currently running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, though they expect an update to Android 4 sometime in Q3.

Engadget was able to run some hands-on benchmarks of the San Diego, and while the performance obviously didn’t match that of the quad-core Samsung Galaxy S III phone, the single-core 1.6 GHz Medfield chip performed solidly for the mid-range smartphone that it is. Medfield held its own specifically when it came to browser performance, something that Intel has focused on in the development of its first Android chipset.

We’re hoping to get our hands on the Intel Medfield-powered San Diego to get our own take on how the device performs, though we’ll likely see some reviews pop up around the internet fairly soon. As it stands, the San Diego provides a decent alternative to the higher-end (and, thus, higher-priced) superphones coming out. Anyone out there excited about getting their hands on the San Diego? Will you UK readers be picking one up when it launches next week?

ASUS Computex teasers hint at dual-booting Transformer

Asus-transformer-dual-boot-computex-630

ASUS is having some fun with us in gearing up for Computex and has now released three teaser videos which when taken together lead us to believe that they are going to be unveiling a new Transformer which can dual-boot or at least run Windows 8 and Android.

The first video, “The Incredible Transformations,”  was released a couple days ago and told us to not get set into one form and that the cloud is ever changing. It then flashes the outline of what looks like a Transformer device with the dock below it.

So that wasn’t terribly informative, but this morning ASUS has added two more teaser videos and while they are still quite nebulous the first of these new videos does offer a bit more information as at the very end you see a drop of water splitting in two with the Windows 8 logo on one and the Android logo on the other.

For the sake of completeness I’ll include the final video, but it doesn’t really tell us anything more other than maintaining the theme of two things coming together as it shows a board with “Tai” on one side and “Chi” on the other. It then spins until the words appear to be next to each other.

Now how exactly this would be implemented is of course left completely unanswered by the videos. It could be a true dual-boot with users opting to use Windows 8 or Android as they start the device or they could use something like BlueStacks to run Android on Windows. It also leaves open the question of whether we are talking about Windows 8 proper or the horrifically named Windows RT.

ASUS hits the stage on June 4th at Computex so we’ll have all the answers soon enough.

I know we have a fair number of ASUS Transformer fans so would you like a little Windows 8 with your Android next time around?
