Google enables in-app subscriptions for Android apps

Posted: 24 May 2012 12:20 PM PDT

The Android team over at Google today announced an update to its Google Play Store which now allows Android users to purchase in-app subscriptions.  Much like in-app purchases did when they were introduced, this will open the door to plenty of new developer options and user delight.  Think in terms of a company who wants to offer a monthly magazine or weekly newsletter but don't want to charge a flat-rate off the top.  As detailed by Google, developers can set a price and billing interval for customers and Google Play will take it from there.

While making it easy for developers to offer a great purchasing experience, our subscriptions are also designed for flexibility. Developers can use them to monetize premium dynamic content such as journals and magazines, but they can also use them to sell access to bundled products, game levels, music and video content, value-added services, or any other digital content.

Developers and users alike are encouraged to read more on the Android Developers blog.

How loyal are you to your Android handset maker? #androidfeedback

Posted: 24 May 2012 11:48 AM PDT

As most of you know, there have been rumors swirling that there could be as many as five companies working on Nexus smartphones for later in the year.  Given that the last two have belonged to Samsung, we've been wondering who might be involved this time around.

Of course there are the bigger players like HTC, Motorola, Sony, and LG who could step in with a Pure Nexus device.  On the other hand, we've seen increasing noise out of other outfits such as Huawei, Pantech, ZTE, and ASUS.  The landscape is constantly shifting and evolving and today's second-tier players could soon wedge their way into the upper echelon.  With so much choice in the Android space, chances are good that you might be considering multiple brands for your next smartphone.

With all of this in mind, we're curious to see how loyal you are to the company that made the phone in your pocket or purse.  Are you going to buy another one from said handset maker or have you had enough?  Would you consider another brand for your next Android?

We recently took to Facebook with this very question to see what you guys and gals were thinking.  Here's what some of you had to say...

Oh yes. I was a motorola fan then went to LG because of antenna issues. I always sounded like I was in a tin can with Motorola. But I'm looking at the new Samsung Galaxy SIII which I will get to try out in France this summer just to see if it's something I want to buy when I get back to the states. I know there will be differences because of country, but I'm excited to see what it looks like. - Louis C.

Hell yeah,I hate this htc wildfire that I got for bday in Sept !!! - Julie N.

Yeah. I like my EVO 4G, but I would also like a Samsung Note because of the larger screen. - Doug F.

I could definitely be swayed. I have a Motorola R2D2 droid and I'm on my 4th replacement. I'm thinking of getting a Samsung next. I love my Samsung tablet. - Angie B.

Using my Atrix for about a year, and yet not going to change it. - Roman B.

I'll use anything Android based. My loyalty is with Android. - Jorge G.

I hate my droid x2, will never buy another motorola product. - Sue S.

My loyalty is first with Android, second to Samsung, I have yet to have a serious issue with any samsung device, little things are found in every make and model, and I find samsungs tend to have the least troubles compared to other brands, but thats my personal opinion. - Jimmy B.

Depends really, I've been loyal to HTC since day one. Hoping by November to see one released for Sprint from HTC. - Irvin Z.

What say you?

Would you consider another handset maker for your next phone or are you married to that brand?  Tell us your Android story.

FCC docs out Huawei T-Mobile myTouch Q

Posted: 24 May 2012 10:29 AM PDT

Documents found on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) web site indicate that Huawei will soon have a second MyTouch Android handset soon for T-Mobile.  The FCC docs refer to a Huawei U8730 model known as the Ascend G 312 Qwerty which has, naturally, a QWERTY keyboard.  The device label suggests the name of T-Mobile myTouch Q, which sounds like a final product name that the carrier would come up.  We'll share more details with this handset as we gather them.

We've certainly warmed to the possibility of picking a Huawei for our next Android, have you?

Win a Galaxy Tab 10.1 from AndroidGuys and Skype!

Posted: 24 May 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Hey there!  Yeah, you!  How would you like to get your hands on a free Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet?  No, we're not kidding - we have a brand new Android tablet that we're super excited to be giving away.  We've partnered with Skype for this promotion and couldn't be more excited to see how you guys and gals respond!

First, a bit about Skype

Founded in 2003 and based in Luxembourg, Skype is the text, voice and video service that nearly everyone has tried and used at least once.  With almost 700 million users around the world, it's fast becoming one of the de facto ways to stay in touch over long distances.  In addition to desktop clients there are also applications that can be downloaded and installed on mobile devices, televisions, and more!

Next, a bit about the Galaxy Tab 10.1

We're talking about the Wi-Fi, 10.1-inch 16GB Samsung tablet that everyone knows and loves.  If you need a brush up on the hardware, here's a quick rundown!

  • Display: 10.1" WXGA (1280x800)
  • Android Honeycomb
  • Dual Core Tegra 2 processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n)
  • 16GB internal storage
  • 3-megapixel camera (720p video) on back
  • 2-megapixel camera on front

How to Enter!

Since we're doing this contest in conjunction with Skype we thought that we'd theme entries around video chat.  We want to know: If you could video chat with anyone at all, ever, in the history of the universe, who would it be?  Taking things a step further, we don't even care if they are real or fictional.  We want to know who you would video chat with and what you would talk about.

You can leave your answer in one of three places: here in the comments, our Facebook Wall, or on our Google Plus Page!  Heck, you can even leave it all three places with different answers and increase your chances of winning.  Should you leave a comment here, you must use a valid email address.  Wherever you ultimately decide to leave your answer, make sure that we can reach you when it's over. Note: you must leave your Facebook and/or Google Plus answer on the dedicated spot, linked within this sentence!

  • Open to residents of the United States and Canada (we know, we know)
  • Contest will run from May 24-June 7
  • Winner will be notified and have 24 hours to respond before we move on to the second place winner.
  • Judging will be conducted by a panel of AndroidGuys staff and will be primarily based on content and originality
    • Yes, technically you could get away with "I'd video chat with Abraham Lincoln and we'd talk about Twilight", but... really?

Have fun with your answer and think it through!

600,000 Google Nexus tablets to ship in June, report indicates

Posted: 24 May 2012 07:34 AM PDT

New details stemming from DigiTimes indicate that the much-ballyhooed Google Nexus tablet will ship in June with an initial volume of 600,000 units per month.  Expected to be co-designed and developed by ASUS, the tablet may take the stage at Google IO on June 27th.

Reports suggest that Google is anticipating somewhere between 2 million and 2.5 million of the Wi-Fi units in 2012.  Rumors had originally tapped the tablet with a May launch however Google pushed things back a bit because the design didn't meet expectations and/or the price would be too high.  It's anticipated that the presumed Nexus tablet would have a quad-core  Tegra 3 processor and that it could cost as low as $199 when it retails.
