Sony Xperia miro unveiled, not the flagship Android phone you hoped for

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 02:42 AM PDT

Sony put up a teaser for a new Xperia handset on its Facebook page a few days ago that suggested that in about 10 days from now we'll see a brand new Android smartphone get official.

Then, the company decided to speed up the process, by allowing fans to virtually travel in time by pressing a "fast forward" button to see the phone earlier than supposed to. Just as expected, the power of the social network worked in our favor and the phone has been unveiled well ahead of its time: the Sony Xperia miro.

Unfortunately for anyone expecting a new flagship Xperia device capable to fight against the Galaxy S3 or the HTC One X, you're about to be disappointed. The miro is not a high-end device. Instead, it's "all about helping you have fun." The miro is a mid-ranged Android device that will come with plenty of Facebook integration. Here are the key features of the handset, as listed on the company's Facebook page:

  • A slim and stylish smartphone in a fun range of colours – black, black/pink, white, and white/gold colours
  • Xperia with Facebook – easier and faster way to like, comment and share from your smartphone
  • Unique illuminations for incoming messages and social updates
  • 3.5-inch display for great browsing and entertainment experiences
  • Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
  • 5MP camera and brilliant quality video recording at 30fps
  • video chat with friends using the front-facing camera
  • Sony's xLOUD audio technology for crisp and loud sound
  • Easily view content on TV, tablet and PC thanks to DLNA contactless connectivity
  • Large battery for longer usage

We don't have any details regarding pricing and release dates for the miro, but we'll be back as soon as Sony and its carrier partners are ready to make further announcements.

U.S. Galaxy S3 launch unhindered by Apple’s preliminary injunction attempts

Posted: 13 Jun 2012 02:26 AM PDT

The Galaxy S3 is going to be available in America from six carriers this summer including the Big Four – Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile – but also two regional carriers: U.S. Cellular and C-Spire. At least three of the four nationwide mobile operators planned to launch the phone in the following week, with June 21 being the earliest U.S. Galaxy S3 release date in the region. But an expected obstacle soon appeared: Apple.

The iPhone maker tried to obtain a preliminary injunction against Galaxy S3 sales in the region, arguing that the handset is in violation of some of its patents. The company attempted to include the Galaxy S3 in one of its existing lawsuits against Samsung (the one that includes the Galaxy Nexus), and then hoped to obtain a favorable court order that would prevent carriers from launching the Galaxy S3 sales on June 21.

But U.S. District Lucy Koh, who's overseeing the U.S. conflict between Apple and Samsung, decided on Monday not to award the court order Apple was keen on obtaining, which means Galaxy S3 sales will go on according to schedule. Judge Koh motivated her decision saying that her calendar would be overloaded by Apple's latest addition to its U.S. cases against Samsung. Reuters reports:

Koh last week said Apple could ask for a temporary restraining order against the Galaxy S III phone, but that would likely delay the trial over a Galaxy tablet and other smartphones. In her order on Monday, the judge said Apple would have to request a new hearing date if it wanted to stop sales of the Galaxy S III phone. That likely would not take place before the phone’s scheduled launch. Apple has not said what its next move will be.

This is the second ruling in a matter of days against Apple in an Android case, after a judge decided to throw out a lawsuit against Motorola a few days ago, after the judge found that "neither side could prove damages”. While Samsung has been practically cleared to launch the Galaxy S3 in the country, that doesn't clear Apple's patent infringement allegations, and we could see the handset be included in future Apple cases against Samsung.

The two companies are already embroiled in a complex patent-based legal dispute that spans across four continents, with the two giants suing and counter-suing each other in 10 different countries amounting to well over 30 different cases. Since Apple and Samsung have recently failed to settle their differences out of court, we're still waiting to see the final rulings in all these lawsuits.

HTC goes ahead with its plan to buy S3 Graphics

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 01:47 PM PDT

htc logo

Following the less than favorable ruling from International Trade Commission regarding HTC's use of Google-given patents in its lengthy legal battle with Apple, the Taiwanese phone maker has revealed that it will continue with its plan to acquire S3 Graphics — in a bid to build its patent arsenal.

During the company's annual shareholders' general meeting, HTC general counsel Grace Lei said that "S3's patent for portfolio is valid and strong, and we have decided to complete the purchase of S3 after a cautious statement."

Once the $300 million purchase is finalized, HTC will gain access to S3's trove of 270 patents, which have been licensed to various companies, such as Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft. Whether or not they will be enough to fend off the relentless attack that Apple has launched against HTC is a different matter. After all, back in November of last year ITC gave Apple the green light on an accusation of HTC infringing two of S3's texture compression technology patents – a ruling that saw HTC placing the deal temporarily on hold.

HTC is facing a perilous journey ahead, what with Apple's dead-set determination to kill its business in the US. Coupled with the intensifying competition in the smartphone market, HTC has been forced to revise its Q2 sales projection downward by 13%.  Here's hoping that HTC will keep calm and carry on.

Spotify for Android gets a major makeover and ICS support

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 01:31 PM PDT

Spotify for Android has finally shed its beta skin. Version 0.5.0 of the music streaming app is now available to download on Google Play, bringing the long awaited compatibility with Android 4.0 devices and a complete redesign, which puts it on par with its iOS cousin.

These are the changes that you'll find in the new Spotify release:

  • All-new slide-out navigation
  • Even more social – check out friends' profile pages and playlists on the go
  • Artist imagery in high resolution
  • Related artist view – available for the first time on mobile
  • "Extreme' sound quality setting for 320kbps listening
  • Play queue
  • Last.fm scrobbling
  • Crossfade/gapless playback settings
  • Widget – control Spotify from the home screen
  • Folder support

In general, the latest version of Spotify seems to receive plenty of love from users, though there are some gripes about the lack of landscape support. But things can only improve from here on in.

For the uninitiated, Spotify for Android only works for those who have a Premium subscription with the music streaming service provider. In the US, that works out at $9.99 per month. Signing up for the Premium account gives you access to over 15 million tracks, which you can even listen to offline, on your Android device – as long as it runs Android 2.1 and up.  We say it's definitely worth trying out the 2-day free trial to see if it meets your needs.

Any avid Spotify users here? How do you dig the new interface and features?

Sony shows off its flexible 9.9-inch OLED panel display (on a laptop screen)

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 12:40 PM PDT

Tech On

Let's add one more company in the long list of those who are trying to make ‘bendable display’ more than just a buzz word. Japanese giant Sony recently showcased its very own flexible OLED panel at the Society for Information Display's Display Week 2012 in Boston – the place to see and be seen for companies in the display industry.

The 9.9-inch flexible OLED panel comes with a 960 x 540 resolution and 111 ppi. The display consists of an amorphous IGZO TFT as a driver element, while the OLED panel gets its color display by utilizing white OLED devices, as well as red, green, blue and white color filters.

Here's what Tech On has to say about the construction process:

The OLED panel was made by using two glass substrates to which films are attached. On one substrate, TFTs and OLED devices are formed. On the other substrate, CFs are formed. After attaching the two substrates to each other, the glass substrates are removed. The TFTs, OLED devices and CFs can be formed by using the same manufacturing processes as used for normal glass substrates.

We suggest you visit the source if you want to read more technical details of Sony's answer to its competitors.

While it would've been an enticing experience to see the bendable panel in person, Sony could only show a video presentation of the flexible display on a laptop instead. Apparently, there was not enough time to evaluate the reliability of the display in time for the convention. What’s clear is that Sony will have to work harder and faster if it were to compete with Corning's Willow Glass and Samsung's Youm this year.

Google working on Wallet 2.0, Sprint moves on with their own payment system

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 09:55 AM PDT

Admit it, we all feel slightly annoyed when the person in front of us at the checkout line pulls out cash from their wallet. We are living in a day and age when paying with “plastic” has become the norm. An even simpler solution that is slowly gaining popularity is the option to pay via smartphone. All you have to do is scan the device at checkout, which has your credit card or debit card information pre-loaded, and you’re done! Of course, it took a long time for the general population to accept card payments as a viable option as well, and only now is there a growing public support for the smartphone pay system.

Google Wallet 2.0 in the works

Google was one of the first to arrive on scene with their Google Wallet app, but they’ve struggled to gain mainstream popularity because of security concerns and a lack of vendor support. In an increasingly competitive market, it looks like Google is planning to release the next iteration of its mobile payment app, Google Wallet 2.0. It is expected that apart from NFC applications, Wallet 2.0 will also emphasize cloud-based payment, offers, and promotion possibilities. The recent acquisition of TxVia by Google is further indication that they are certainly taking the “Wallet wars” seriously.  NFC Times dutifully reports that more information or even an official announcement is possible during Google I/O at the end of this month.

Sprint planning own mobile payment system

Courtesy of NFC Times

Major carriers such as AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile have already started a partnership to release their own mobile payment system called Isis. Although Sprint has been one of the supporters of Google Wallet, with all their high-end Android devices coming with the app pre-loaded, it looks like Sprint is now looking to leave their own mark in the mobile payment system race. Sprint’s app, called “Touch,” is expected to compete with both the Google Wallet and the Isis Wallet.

AndroidCentral got their hands on leaked slides that show how the Sprint payment system is expected to work. The system looks to work almost identically to the Google Wallet app, requiring you enter a pass code, that opens a menu with multiple options, along with credit card options if the device is tapped to a card reader. A “brief animation” shows the wallet locking up again once payment is done. What is interesting to note is the inclusion of possible partners that include McDonald’s, Macy’s, Target, Starbucks, Barnes and Noble, etc. Whether these are actual partners or just use as an example in the slides is still unknown.

With the release of Touch, Sprint will also have to drop support for Google’s Wallet system, as the same NFC device will not be able to run both payment systems. But like Google Wallet 2.0, the Sprint payment system will also support both NFC as well as cloud-based applications.

Conclusion

The mobile payment system race is certainly heating up, as the competition keeps growing with Square and Paypal being a few  of the other companies also joining in. Security concerns are also still a major issue with using such payment systems, and will take a while for a complete acceptance of such apps as a standard. But the current situation does give us a glimpse of a future where everyone will be using their smartphones to shop and make payments.

I can’t wait till I’m asked at the checkout line, “Will that be cash, card, or phone?” How about you? Let us know in the comments section below.

Swing your sword, cast a fireball spell, and play the battle tunes to ward off monsters in the Battleheart app.

Monster Galaxy

Do you remember the cartoon series Pokemon? I was one of the avid fans of Ash and Pikachu’s adventures. I even named my pet hamster Pikachu and I wish it could generate some electric sparks, too. If you liked watching Pokemon, why not make yourself a monster trainer with the Monster Galaxy app? Although it doesn’t have cute and cuddly Pokemons like Pikachu or Jigglypuff, the app follows the same concept of catching monsters and putting them into battle.

Your main task is to catch monsters, which they call Mogas, and test their skills in battles. Travel and explore the world packed with 14 Zodiac-themed islands and collect monsters. There are about 125 monsters for you to collect. As you catch and collect Mogas, you also have to train your monsters as you make your way to defeat King Otho.

Can you collect all 125 monsters and defeat King Otho? Be a Mogas trainer with the Monster Galaxy app.

Six-Guns

Experience the wild west with Buck Crosshaw and the Six-Guns app on your Android device. Buck is an outlaw that takes out naughty cowboys and robbers. You also get to face supernatural creatures such as vampires and mysterious monsters throughout the game.

The app lets you control Buck and help him accomplish his missions. Using this app lets you explore the places of Arizona and Oregon right from your home couch. You can also customize your character by unlocking a variety of clothes and be a cowboy with a style.

And, let’s not forget the horses and guns to make the set complete. The app allows you to choose from 8 different horses and 19 weapons. What’s more is that the game is available for free. You don’t have to pay anything to download Six-Guns and finish it through to the end.

Saddle up, reload your guns, and wear your cowboy outfit as you journey to the Wild West with Six-Guns.

Third Blade

Want to play a monster-slashing, adrenaline-pumping RPG game on your mobile phone? Try playing the Third Blade app on your Android device. You control a hero in this game and on every level, you have to defeat a set of monsters. You also have to defeat tough bosses along the way.

The game lets you choose 3 different kinds of weapons. Dual wields allows you to use two weapons in both hands. You can rapidly attack monsters and have a higher chance of inflicting damage to them, but dual wielding does little damage. Dual wields are also good to build up your combo counter. Combo gives you additional attack points and added critical rates.

The single-handed sword is the safest weapon to use. It lets you do average damage and normal speed attack.  The single-handed sword is the heavier weapon. Using this weapon inflicts more damage but sacrifices your attack speed. This weapon is ideal for big and slow moving monsters.

You can also buy new weapons and learn new skills that match the weapon you use. You have to mix and match the appropriate weapons and skills suitable to the monsters you face.

What are your waiting for? Keep your adrenaline pumping with the Third Blade app on your Android device.

First OTA updates for Galaxy S3 now rolling out to “improve stability”

Posted: 12 Jun 2012 08:43 AM PDT

Just days after releasing the Galaxy S3 in Europe and parts of Asia, and before getting it out in the US, Samsung has already issued not one, but two OTA (over-the-air) updates for their new flagship phone.

The first of the two upgrades weighs in at 31.17 MB, according to a SlashGear report, but only 9 MB, according to the guys at Phone Arena, and its changelog only mentions "improved stability" as software tweaks and/or improvements.

To get the update, you only have to access the Android settings menu in your Galaxy S3, tap "About Device" and then "Software Update". A message will pop up if you perform a manual check, and the new software package should be up and running in a matter of minutes, depending on your network connection speed.

After downloading the first update, you should get another prompt message for a second OTA upgrade weighing in at another 15.57 MB (or less, depending on your phone's initial configuration). This second OS update comes with the same "thorough" changelog mentioning just "improved stability" at details about the new software package.

The S3 updates might depend on your location and exact S3 model number, so if you're unable to download and install any of the two firmware upgrades, don’t worry too much and give it some time. Also, if we are to trust Ben Kersey from SlashGear, who has installed both updates and has played around with Samsung's new flagship phone for a while, there aren't any "radical" software changes or improvements to report. Then again, that shouldn't come as a surprise, considering the fact that we haven't yet seen anything wrong with the Galaxy S3's OS.

The new S3's build number after installing both updates should be "I9300BUALF1.DM" and, if you happen to bump into any kind of visible changes, upgrades or improvements on your spanking new phone, please drop us a comment below and let us know.

Also, has anyone been complaining about S3's stability that Samsung felt the need to roll out these updates, or are these simple precautions taken to ensure everything runs as smooth as possible?
