HTC responds to Jelly Bean update questions

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 05:58 AM PDT

Now that Jelly Bean has been announced, everyone wants to know... will their phone be getting the update - and, if so, when? HTC has heard the question, and has responded:

"We are excited about Android Jelly Bean and are planning to support it across a variety of our devices.  We are reviewing the software to determine our upgrade plans and schedule, so please stay tuned for more updates on specific device upgrade plans."

Chances are, the HTC One line of phones will see the update. As far as other phones, however, we just don't know, but will wait to hear further from HTC.

Jelly Bean has new permission option to “read external storage”

Posted: 29 Jun 2012 04:42 AM PDT

With the android world a'buzz with Jelly Bean news after its announcement on Wednesday, people are wanting to know what's new with it. We gave you a full run-down a couple days ago, but now we're finding out some specifics, and there's something else that wasn't mentioned in the keynote: a new permission.

Now, in Jelly Bean, we're getting the "read external storage" permission. According to Google:

READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE
Provides protected read access to external storage. In Android 4.1 by default all applications still have read access. This will be changed in a future release to require that applications explicitly request read access using this permission. If your application already requests write access, it will automatically get read access as well. There is a new developer option to turn on read access restriction, for developers to test their applications against how Android will behave in the future.

So, when you hop into the development options on your Jelly Bean device, don't be surprised to see this new option. We won't see the permission in Android 4.1.0, but most likely in 4.1.1, and its intention is to keep your device more secure.

Your thoughts? let us know in the comments.

Amazon to launch two Kindle tablets, both featuring metal casing and improved build

Posted: 28 Jun 2012 05:06 PM PDT

When Amazon launched the Kindle Fire, they actually made a big breakthrough in the tablet market, they actually brought a tablet with so much potential and a small price tag. And we all know that when we are talking about a device with so much potential and a balanced price tag, how can Google stay behind? With the launch of Google Nexus 7 yesterday, Google told Amazon that they are not behind, but do you think Amazon is going to sit quietly?

Our friends over at BGR are letting the cat of the bag by saying that Amazon is preparing two new Android tablets, one will be the successor to the Kindle Fire, and other will be 10-inch Android tablet powered by a quad-core processor. BGR's source handled both tablets, and they are saying that the build quality is much better as compared to the predecessor. Instead of plastic, the chassis is made up of metal. Though the design of both tablets are described as a thinner version of iPad, however there are no button on the front side (I hope Apple wouldn't sue Amazon for that).

The tablets are probably already in production and according to a previous report, we will see it somewhere in the second half of 2012. Do you think the new Kindle Fire series will be challenging enough for Google/ASUS and other manufacturers? Tell us about it in the comment box below.
