T-Mobile version of Galaxy S III has identical form factor as global edition

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 03:06 PM PDT

Thanks to a leaked set of official looking photos, we know that the Galaxy S III form factor stays the same for at least one of  U.S. carriers.  The Verge has obtained a pair of images for T-Mobile's version of the upcoming smartphone and it appears to be identical to the global version.  The home button stays, the camera is in the same spot, the headphone jack... everything.

Pardon us for a moment but we couldn't be more excited by this bit of news.  Why? Because now we can expect proper support for cases, gel skins, adapters, docks, and other accessories.  Here's to hoping the other U.S. iterations are the same across the board!

Leaked Fujitsu roadmap pegs two Android tablets for 2012

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 09:05 AM PDT

A leaked Fujitsu roadmap hitting the internet today suggests the manufacturer has two Android tablets which should arrive in the near term.  First up is the 10-inch "High-End Bacura" which is actually listed as launching in the first quarter.  Given we're already beyond that window we wouldn't be surprised if the rest of the roadmap was subject to change.  It's also possible that the internal product calendar for Fujitsu isn't the same as a standard calendar you see on the wall.

The second model is another 10-inch tablet called the "Volume" and is tapped with a Q2 release.  There are two additional Windows-based tablets on the roadmap, one of which is called Stylistic.  As SlashGear points out, the Sylistic model name was initially found in a 10-inch Android tablet earlier in the year.  Perhaps Fujitsu decided to change horses in the middle of the stream and give the name to the Windows model.  Whatever the case, we're anxious to see what makes one of them a "high end" tablet and the other not so much.

Samsung: Galaxy S and S II sales at 50 million and climbing

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 06:15 AM PDT

Samsung might be just getting started with their Galaxy S III handset but that doesn't mean they can't plug the stuff that's already on the market.  According to the manufacturer, the Galaxy S and its successor, the Galaxy S II, have crossed the 50 million mark.

Since its debut in 2010, the Korean phone maker has sold 24 million Galaxy S phones and 28 million Galaxy S II around the globe. Further, the phone and tablet hybrid Galaxy Note is already at 7 million and climbing.

When talking about the figures Samsung refers to these as sales, however it would be more accurate to term them as shipments (to retailers).  These would would be the phones that are on hand in your local carrier or at warehouses for indirect channels.  Nevertheless, considering how well these models are selling, we cannot imagine there being much disparity in sales versus shipments.

With the Galaxy S III just now touching down in various parts of the world it may be a few weeks before we get some sales figures for the new handset.  Based on the sheer interest and number of carriers expecting to offer the GS III, we figure Samsung will shatter their previous records.

Carmageddon to crash your Android device this summer

Posted: 01 Jun 2012 06:02 AM PDT

Those of you who grew up playing PC games in the late 90's and early 2000's will no doubt recall the "points for pedestrians" series of games called Carmageddon.  The cartoonishly violent games which had players purposefully driving around and crashing into random folks was a pretty big deal when it was first released. Now, the developers (Stainless Games) have announced that they will revive the original classic title and release it on Android and iOS later this summer.

A YouTube trailer (below) is already online, teasing 2:00 minutes worth of headbanging speed metal crashes and features.

  • The game is a conversion of the original Carmageddon PC game, with improved game engine and graphics.
  • A wide selection of touch control methods.
  • Intuitive gesture system allowing repair and recovery of the player vehicle in game.
  • Action Replay allowing players to save a movie and upload it to YouTube.

And as a way of saying a massive Thank You to their Backers on Kickstarter.com for funding their forthcoming brand new PC title Carmageddon: Reincarnation through a successful campaign on the crowd-sourced funding site, Stainless Games will be launching the iOS version of the game FREE on the iTunes Store for the first 24 hours after launch – so that Backers and Fans can enjoy the mobile touch-screen Carmageddon experience at NO COST!

The teaser trailer can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKjEfS0IRT8&feature=youtu.be

  • A wide selection of touch control methods.
  • Intuitive gesture system allowing repair and recovery of the player vehicle in game.
  • Action Replay allowing players to save a movie and upload it to YouTube.
  • Game Center integration on iOS.

Game Center integration brings Achievements and Leaderboards to Carmageddon for the very first time.  How much higher than your friends' can your pedestrian count rise? Who's pulled off the most Cunning Stunts? Now you'll know!

"To get Carmageddon working on these new devices, and looking the best it's ever looked, is just fantastic.  And what's more, I'm now finally able to play Carmageddon on the toilet!"  said Stainless co-founder and Executive Director Neil Barnden.

"Carmageddon on a mobile is the most fun you can have with your thumbs," said Patrick Buckland, co-founder of Stainless Games.  "And as a way of saying THANKS to our fantastic Kickstarter Backers for their amazing support, we're going to launch Carmageddon on the App Store FREE for the first 24 hours!"

"Always remember – look both ways before crossing…" he added, "Particularly if you're playing Carmageddon on your mobile at the same time…"

Carmageddon will be made available to download on app stores across the globe this summer.

Pledges for the new game, Carmageddon: Reincarnation, on PC are still rising, with it looking likely the studio will make its first "stretch goal" of $600,000 (to fund Mac and Linux versions of the game), and head on towards the further stretch goals for special PratCam and Co-Op Multiplayer features to be added. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/stainlessgames/carmageddon-reincarnation

Alcatel OT986 hits China – yet another high end smartphone

Posted: 30 May 2012 12:04 PM PDT

When we talk about smartphones, we generally talk about bigger brands like HTC, Samsung, LG or Motorola .  Increasingly, however, we have companies like Alcatel muscling into the conversations of  "high-end smartphones", much like Huawei and ZTE . Alcatel, generally known for low-end phones recently introduced their newest smartphone, the OT986.

The Android 4.0 smartphone comes with a 4.5-inch 1280×720 HD IPS display, a 1.5 GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4460 processor, a 5 MP camera with LED flash and 2 MP front-facing camera for video chatting.  Additionally there is 1GB RAM, 8GB of built-in storage space, HSPA support, and a form factor that is only 9.75 mm thin.

A device with high end hardware like this would normally cost a pretty penny, however Alcatel is also planning to bring a cheap version with 1.2 GHz dual-core processor and 4 GB of built-in storage.

Currently limited to the Chinese market (TCL S900), the handset will cost 1,999 yuan, which comes in at about $315 or €252, according to the current exchange rate. So it would be good to see a device with fair stuff under the hood in US or UK market with an affordable price tag. If Alcatel brings this smartphone to UK or America, would you consider picking it up?

Would you take a risk on an Alcatel phone or do you prefer more name brand stuff?

Tell us in the comment box below.
