Energizer USB Wall Charger review

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 02:22 PM PDT

One of the best things about mobile phones today is that they pretty much all have the same standard microUSB charger. For those of us who own more than one handset or gadget this is great. Because many of our devices use the same chargers we will often grab one from one room to take to another. Perfect, until you realize that your wife has somehow managed to take three of your chargers with her to work. Do yourself a favor and scoop up a couple of extra wall chargers.

I've spent the last few weeks using an Energizer USB Wall Charger that I received during CTIA. There's not a lot you can say about a charger other than how it might be different from the competition, if at all. The Energizer USB Wall Charger has become one of my favorites because it's so portable and compact.

The design of the Energizer USB Wall Charger is somewhat unique in that you can wrap its cord up and fold in the prongs when not in use. Ideal for tossing in a purse or overnight bag, the compact bundle fits in the palm of your hand. Think racquetball and you're already too big.

Another handy feature is the indicator light which glows blue when charging. A quick glance across the room tells you whether or not your device is completely done. Don't see the light glowing? Pull that phone off and go! As someone who wears contact lenses or glasses, I've come to appreciate this feature. No longer do I need to tap the device to check the status of my charge. Instead, I just look for the blurry, blue haze over near the nightstand.

Priced at roughly $12.50 a piece I would suggest buying two of these. Energizer is a more than reputable brand and the charger is all quality. Pick up one for yourself and then hide that thing from your wife.

TomTom to launch Android application this summer – again

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 01:30 PM PDT

If you are a big fan of GPS applications, then I am sure you are familiar with TomTom. TomTom is one of the leading applications and it's been around for a long time - but it's still not available for Android, yet is for iOS. Back in 2009, TomTom made it clear that they are not ignoring Android, and they will also bring an application for it, but it's been two years... and still no sign of it.

TomTom's co-founder confirmed with Pocket-Lint that 'they're still working on an Android application, and that it would "likely come sometime this summer". I am still trying to think what's stopping them, because they said the same thing last year as well and here we are, but now it's too late for TomTom.

TomTom Premium version retails around $50 at the Apple Store, which brings the navigation and other features to the device. In the meantime, Google also launched the latest version of Google Maps, and it will be offering free navigation without internet connection in future, so I don't think so people will pay a big chunk of change for TomTom Navigation when they will be getting it for free from Google.

Anyway, to compete with Google Maps, TomTom will have to come up with something Google isn't offering, right? Tell us what do you think about it in the comment box below.

Ouch – Judge orders Oracle to reimburse Google’s legal expenses

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 12:09 PM PDT

Just last week, the judge presiding over the case between Oracle and Google found the Google was innocent of the charges against them for patent infringement. That's not the news we've got in this particular article. No, this time, the news is that the same judge also ordered Oracle to completely reimburse Google's legal fees. The story goes a little something like this: Oracle brought their suit to the court system not once, not twice, but three separate times. Judge William Alsup didn't like this, and even accused Oracle outright of wasting the court's time. He said that Oracle could only bring the suit back the third time on the condition that Oracle repay Google any fees associated with coming back to court.

The total in damages, according to Google spokesman Jim Prosser, came to over $300,000. That's alot of dough, folks, whether you're a huge corporation or not. Also, keep in mind, having the reputation of whining to the courts so much that you're told to pay lost funds back to the defendant? That's pretty embarrassing, and will likely tarnish Oracle's image for a long time to come. It should also be noted that Oracle spokeswoman Deborah Hellinger declined to comment.

If you want to take a look at the official court documents, they can be found here. Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Google acquires QuickOffice and Meebo

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 11:45 AM PDT

Google recently launched their very own cloud computing service known as Google Drive, and I am sure that all Google fans are familiar with Google Docs as well. Now the search giant is planning to expand their line of mobile applications, as they have now acquired one of the most famous mobile suites known as QuickOffice. The app is available for both Android and iOS, and Google is planning to combine its features and integrate it into apps in the future. Have a look at what Google said:

"We're happy to announce that we have acquired Quickoffice, a leader in office productivity solutions.
Today, consumers, businesses and schools use Google Apps to get stuff done from anywhere, with anyone and on any device. Quickoffice has an established track record of enabling seamless interoperability with popular file formats, and we'll be working on bringing their powerful technology to our Apps product suite.
Quickoffice has a strong base of users, and we look forward to supporting them while we work on an even more seamless, intuitive and integrated experience.
We're excited to welcome the Quickoffice team and their users to Google."

QuickOffice already offers integration with Dropbox and many other applications, and soon we will see integration with Google Drive as well. In related Google acquisition news, we've learned that Meebo has been picked up for around $100 million. Expected to play out in the advertising field, we imagine this will tie in with Google+ pretty tightly.

Tell us what do you think about Google's latest acquisitions in the comments below.

The Google Nexus 7 tablet should look something like this

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 11:11 AM PDT

With but a few weeks to go before Google I/O 2012 kicks off and the presumed Google Nexus tablet announcement, we would expect to get a look at the rumored device before long.  If the two images here prove to be legit, this is what the Asus-manufactured Google Nexus 7 tablet looks like... only less blurry.

UPDATE: Speaking of legitimacy, TechHog has a great write-up on all the reasons that make these two pictures out to be fakes.

Featuring what appears to be three colors (white face, black/grey back), the tablet has the familiar Google logo right in middle of the backside.  Looking quite a bit like a massive Galaxy Note, the tablet looks to be held in more of a portrait mode as opposed to landscape.  Notice that speaker at the top of the screen?  Surely we are not the only one who thinks this thing might double as a phone.  Either way, we'd use Google Voice and install Groove IP on the first day.

Recapping some of the details that have been circulating for a while, the Nexus 7 should have a Tegra 3 processor, run Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), and run about $150-$200.

Google Maps offline announced, coming to Android

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 10:39 AM PDT

The big Google Maps event has gotten underway and it has already left a little something called mobile offline maps in its wake.  Google has today announced that future versions of Google Maps will give users access to offline maps and navigation features, providing essential map functions even in cases of no data connectivity.

It's not quite clear how soon this will go into effect nor how fully functional it will be.  Some of you already know that you can turn on a Labs feature in today's Maps which lets you long-press to download offline maps in a 10-mile area.  Will it be something users are asked to long-press if/when needed or might it automatically cache your trips and navigation for you?  We'll find out soon enough.

As for Google Earth, Google is showing off the next iteration of its popular software.  You'll see from the YouTube video below that it's really something to behold and really quite amazing.  Will this ever make to the mobile version?  Would you ever use it?

Kindle Fire gets HBO Go

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 10:06 AM PDT

Amazon Kindle Fire users with HBO accounts are encouraged to check out the Appstore today.  The on-demand awesomeness that is HBO Go is now available is available for the 7-inch tablet.  Like its Android phone and iOS counterpart, the app lets users watch movies and original television shows from the cable company's massive library.  Although it's not yet available for Android tablets, we're okay with revisiting The Wire on our Kindle Fire.

Hmmm, wonder if someone is able to rip the APK to try on other Android tablets...

Google patent hints at new location-aware features in Android

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 08:22 AM PDT

A newly uncovered patent application from 2011 suggests that Google may have some new location-aware features for future versions of Android.  Initially submitted in September, the patent looks to have been recently awarded so it's possible we could see this in short order.  Or... we could never see it at all.

The patent itself sounds an awful lot like Motorola Smart Actions, which totally makes sense considering Google's recent acquisition.  Using GPS, network address data, and your travel history, the system would trigger contextual and/or location-based actions.  Sounds a little bit like what Microsoft is doing with their new on{X} stuff.  Going further, it sounds like Google is patenting some of the things that apps like Locale have done.  There are plenty of apps out there that trigger actions based on location so it's unclear how much different Google's patent is, if it all.

Did you see the hula Android cameo in today’s Google doodle?

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 06:52 AM PDT

Today's Google doodle (June 6, 2012) is one that's near and dear to my heart, for two reason.  First, it's in celebration of the opening of the first drive-in theater, something of which I've always been a fan.  Second, because our favorite little Android makes a cameo!  You don't have to look too hard to find him - he (or she) is on the dashboard, dressed in a grass skirt and coconut bikini.

Trivia question: Can you name the "scream" that you hear when the man opens the door?  It's crazy popular and found in nearly every action movie made today.

IDC: Android will peak in 2012, Windows Phone to eclipse iOS in 2016

Posted: 06 Jun 2012 06:37 AM PDT

A new report out of the International Data Corporation (IDC), Android's growth will reach its zenith this year. Expected to reach 61 percent of the smartphone market share in 2012, the platform will see its piece of the pie dwindle over the next few years, tapering to 52 percent in 2016.  IDC sees tremendous growth on the smartphone front this year (38.8 percent) however that won't be enough to offset the slowing feature phone sales.  All said and done the firm predicts 1.8 billion units sold across the entire cell phone landscape.

Getting back to Android, IDC believes that Microsoft's Windows Phone platform will emerge as a strong competitor over the next few years.  In fact, they forecast that it could slip just beyond Apple's iOS platform by 2016.  According to their estimates, Android will retain the lead with 52.9 percent of the market followed by Windows Phone (19.2 percent), and iOS (19.0 percent).  BlackBerry, for its part, will keep chugging along for the next four years with around 6 percent of the smartphone market.

IDC projects Android will remain the most shipped smartphone operating system over the course of the five-year forecast though its share will peak this year. Increasingly, its share and growth will be driven by Samsung sales. This Android stratification will happen even as more devices powered by Google's mobile OS from a wide variety of phone makers enter the market.

Will Android top at out 61 percent this year?  Will Microsoft's mobile OS emerge as a dominant player?  Will BlackBerry still exist four years from now? CHIME IN!
