Final Fantasy for Android now available on Google Play for $6.99

Four weeks after the Google Play launch of Final Fantasy III, Square Enix has now released “the Final Fantasy that started it all!” Final Fantasy for Android allows you to relive the amazing game which paved the way for at least a dozen more Final Fantasy titles over a 25 year history. The graphics may not be as good as Shadow Gun, The Dark Knight Rises, or Angry Birds, but the turn-based battles and compelling story line of Final Fantasy guarantee hours of nostalgic entertainment.

The 46.39MB download does require Android 2.1 and does cost more than most Android games. The $6.99 price tag may seem steep to most, but we’re sure Square Enix will still be able to sell quite a few copies of the game since the $15.99 priced Final Fantasy III has racked up nearly 100,000 sales in less than a month.

We know most Android users prefer cheap or free games, but is $6.99 a fair price for a classic RPG game like Final Fantasy?

Update: AT&T HTC One X price reduced to $99.99

Right now, most AT&T customers are opting for the Samsung Galaxy S III over the HTC One X, but that could soon change. According to reports from AT&T sales reps and an image from an internal AT&T email, the price of the HTC One X will be reduced by $100 on July 29th. The new $99.99 price point will put the HTC One X in direct price competition with the Motorola Atrix HD, Sony XPERIA Ion, Samsung Galaxy S II, and even the iPhone 4, which launched more than two years ago.

HTC and AT&T have not disclosed why the price of the HTC one X is being cut in half only a few months after its retail debut, but we do know that Samsung’s Galaxy S III has had unprecedented success and we’re sure HTC is feeling the pressure. The Samsung Galaxy S III is technically a better device than the HTC One X, but would you purchase HTC’s flagship Android phone if AT&T does drop the price to $99.99?

Update: AT&T has reduced the price of the HTC One X to $99.99 a few days early. Enjoy!

MetaWatch Strata tries to cash in on the Kickstarter craze

Are you tempted to buy a smartwatch yet? Various models have been available for the last couple of years, but there haven’t been any success stories yet. The Pebble was the first smartwatch to generate some real buzz when it raised over $10 million on Kickstarter, but the device has been delayed and we don’t know when it will ship.

Now Dallas based MetaWatch is attempting to cash in on the recent smartphone craze with their Strata watch on Kickstarter. You will need to pledge $159 or more to reserve your Strata smartwatch, which is more than the $115 Pebble was asking for, but it looks like MetaWatch will ship their device first.

MetaWatch has an advantage because they have been developing smartwatches for the past 8 years, building and enhancing the supply chain and production network behind MetaWatch for the past 6 years, and developing the MetaWatch platform for the past two years.

Features of the MetaWatch Strata are in line with the current crop of smartwatches. It connects to your Android phone via Bluetooth and then it relays notifications to your wrist. The embedded watch code is open source so developers will be able to create their own applications and native watch code for experiments.

Features available at launch include:

  • Multiple Watch Faces
  • Caller-ID Notifications
  • SMS & Email Notifications
  • Facebook & Twitter Notifications
  • Weather / Stock/ Calendar Widgets
  • Lost Phone Alarm
  • Alarms & Timers
  • Music Control
  • Integrated Running and Cycling App

Specifications

  • Handset compatibility: iPhone 4s, iPad (3), Android (various)
  • Sensor compatibility: Initially, Wahoo Fitness BLE sensors for iPhone 4s
  • iOS compatibility: iOS 5 (basic functionality), iOS 6 (enhanced functionality)
  • Double injection molded PU, co-molded with PC body
  • Mineral hardened glass lens with anti-glare coating
  • Titanium finished stainless steel top ring
  • 5 ATM water resistant (you can swim with it, but no diving)
  • 96×96 mirror polymer network display
  • Vibrating alerts
  • 6 buttons
  • Rechargeable (5-7 day battery life)
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • 3 Axis accelerometer / ambient light sensor

I have recently been wearing the Sony SmartWatch and I also backed the Pebble, so I went ahead and pledged towards the Strata to see how it compares. Only the Sony SmartWatchs is available right now (for as low as $114) and it already has a robust ecosystem with 100′s of apps, so I think it’s the best option at the moment.

If you want to know more about the MetaWatch Strata then head over to their Kickstarter page. You can also listen to a interview with Bill Geiser the CEO of MetaWatch at Tech.pinions.

Kicktraq shows that the Strata is trending towards reaching its funding goal, so pledge early if you want to reserve your unit before the limited supply is sold out.

Pantech Star Q coming soon to Verizon 4G LTE

Thanks to an anonymous tipster, we now have the first look at the upcoming Verizon Pantech Star Q 4G LTE. This device is the successor to last year’s Pantech Breakout, and it appears to be aiming for the low price point of $99 on contract.

Highlights of the device include Android 4.0.4, 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 4 inch WVGA display, 3 MP rear camera, front-facing camera, 5-row QWERTY keyboard, and Bluetooth 4.0. It’s nice to see Android 4.x and the new Snapdragon S4 processor, but the low resolution display and camera are disappointing.

We don’t know exactly when the device will hit stores, but it’s already appearing in NenaMark benchmarks and a tester has upload some sample pics to Picassa. Verizon’s current low-end QWERTY slider phones, the LG Enlighten and Samsung Stratosphere, both came out last year, so we should see the Pantech Star Q enter the lineup soon.

The Pantech Q probably won’t win over any of the hardcore fans, but it will attract an audience with its low price point, fast 4G LTE, and speedy Snapdragon S4 chip.
