T-Mobile takes on AT&T new shared data plan, calls it costly, complicated and punitive

Posted: 18 Jul 2012 02:47 PM PDT

Competition between mobile networks in USA is very, very tough, especially between Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint. T-Mobile is now turning their cannons toward AT&T, targeting their latest shared data plans offering. The thing you will read below is written by T-Mobile's Director of Product Marketing, Harry Thomas, where he is trying to say that AT&T plans are costly, complicated and not good for customers. Read it below:

"Unlike AT&T and Verizon, T-Mobile does not plan on introducing shared family data plans and believes consumers will not benefit from that model. AT&T and Verizon shared family plans are:

· COSTLY – AT&T and Verizon are charging more for what consumers want by raising rates on data, but promoting the "value" by pointing to unlimited talk and text even though today many consumers use less of these services.
· COMPLICATED – both plans force customers to share data when many customers don't know how much data they're using, which makes it hard to stay within their limit when trying to balance multiple users.
· PUNITIVE – At the same time that AT&T and Verizon are making it harder for customers to manage overages, they are also charging overage rates of $15/GB for accounts with at least one smartphone.

Conversely, at T-Mobile we believe that:

· Customers who pay more, should get more – Rather than having to account for each device on a shared4.gif family data plan, T-Mobile customers can use their existing data plan to power multiple devices, while still saving hundreds of dollars annually.
· Data should be worry-free – With T-Mobile's unlimited data plans, there is no surprise data cap or bill shock.
· Data plans should be flexible and affordable – At T-Mobile, customers have the option of only paying for the amount of data each member of the family believes they will need." – Harry Thomas for T-Mobile

As we all are familiar with AT&T, they are not going to remain silent so keep your fingers crossed because we might see an attack from AT&T's side as well. Anyway, tell us what do you think about all this? Is Harry Thomas right? Tell us in the comment box below.

The race between the world thinnest smartphones will never stop, but what I am going to show your today is not only the thinnest smartphone ever, it's probably the strongest thinnest device on planet Earth. Behold, the Oppo Finder it's only 6.65mm thick, making it the world's thinnest smartphone at the moment.

A video is posted on Youtube where the smartphone is used to hammer nails in a block of wood, yes it's used as a hammer! It's literally unbelievable and the shocking thing is there is no scratch or crack on the phone. It's available for $393 in China, and it's rocking on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Dual-core A15 processor, 1GB of RAM and a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display. ZTE launches ZTE Grand X in UK for £190

Posted: 18 Jul 2012 12:29 PM PDT

ZTE is one of the brands that's rapidly emerging in the world of smartphones. In last recent months, they came up with some good devices, like the beautiful upcoming Athena and many more. ZTE is now finally launching the ZTE Grand X in UK, which was announced a month ago, though it comes with some changes. The device will be available at Virgin Mobile UK for £190 PAYG, and in this price you will get a  4.3-inch qHD LCD touchscreen, 1GHz dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB storage, 5-megapixel camera with VGA front-facing camera, and there's microSD expandable storage.

It's only 10mm thick and it's running stock Ice Cream Sandwich, though it's good to see a neat device running Google's impressive OS. Anyway, we are interested in seeing this device in the States, as ZTE is slowly dipping their toes in U.S water and they are probably growing just like Samsung, so hopefully we can see this device hitting a regional carrier or maybe Sprint want's to carry it as a budget-friendly device. Fingers crossed.

Import ban on some select Motorola Android devices

Posted: 18 Jul 2012 10:48 AM PDT

It's been a few months since the ITC decided on banning select Motorola Android devices. While the ITC mentioned the likes of the Google-powered Atrix, Xoom, Droid 2, etc., the exclusion covers all Motorola devices that infringe on Microsoft's patents for email-based meeting scheduling. Motorola is working hard to keep these devices in the hands of US consumers, because the ruling doesn't include stock they already have.

Motorola has said:

In view of the ITC exclusion order which becomes effective Wednesday with respect to the single ActiveSync patent upheld in Microsoft's ITC-744 proceeding, Motorola has taken proactive measures to ensure that our industry-leading smartphones remain available to consumers in the U.S. We respect the value of intellectual property and expect other companies to do the same.

Are you upset that this is happening to Motorola? Do you think that the email-based meeting scheduling is actually infringing on that patent? Let us know in the comments below!

AT&T announces shared data plans

Posted: 18 Jul 2012 04:59 AM PDT

Today, AT&T has announced a new set of data plans. Like Verizon, these data plans are shared, making them the second major US carrier to offer such plans. The changes should come in late August. The plans are not mandatory, as they are at Verizon, meaning you can keep your current data plan if you so choose. Nobody should lose their unlimited plans.

AT&T's data plans look like this:

Amount of data in plan Cost for data Cost for each device Base total
1GB $40 $45 $85
4GB $70 $40 $110
6GB $90 $35 $125
10GB $120 $30 $150
15GB $160 $30 $190
20GB $200 $30 $230

There can be as many as 10 devices attached to these new data plans, but at least one device must be a smartphone. While this may be a little confusing at first, users will get used to the pricing relatively quickly.

What are your thoughts on the new data plans? Let us know in the comments, and be sure to check out the full press release below.

AT&T GIVES CUSTOMERS MORE CHOICE WITH NEW SHARED WIRELESS DATA PLANS

New Mobile Share Plans Allow Customers to Easily Share Data Across Smartphones, Tablets and Other Devices

New and Current Customers Not Required To Choose or Switch to Shared Plans

DALLAS, JULY 18, 2012 — AT&T* customers will soon have more options in choosing the plan that's right for them and their mobile devices. With new AT&T Mobile Share plans, available in late August, new and existing customers can share a single bucket of data across smartphones, tablets, and other compatible devices, plus get unlimited talk and text. AT&T Mobile Share plans make it easy for customers to manage their data, voice minutes and texting, without needing to keep track of multiple plans.

Customers can select one of the new shared data plans or choose one of AT&T's existing individual or family plans. Current customers are not required to switch to the new plans, but can choose to do so without a contract extension. There are no changes to AT&T's device upgrade policy, which means customers eligible to upgrade to AT&T's best device price are not required to switch plans. The new plans will also be available for business customers.

With AT&T Mobile Share plans, customers start by choosing how much data they want each month, then choose up to 10 devices to attach to their shared plan, one of which must be a smartphone. Each plan includes tethering and unlimited domestic calls and texts for smartphones and basic or quick messaging phones. The larger the data bucket you choose, the less you pay per gigabyte and the less you pay for each smartphone added to the shared plan.
AT&T Mobile Share allows customers to essentially build a plan to fit their devices and usage. Customers who are more data-centric can choose a larger data bucket. Customers who typically use more voice than data can add multiple smartphones and basic phones and opt for a smaller data bucket.

"We offer customers a broad choice and the best lineup of plans, now enhanced by Mobile Share," said David Christopher, chief marketing officer, AT&T Mobility. "With these new plans, the more you share, the more you save. They'll be a good fit for a variety of new and existing customers. But if customers want to stay on their current plan or choose from our existing plans, they can do that, too. It's their choice.

"Today we think of people's smartphones and tablets sharing a bucket of data. But in the future we'll see health care monitors, connected cars, security systems and other devices in the home all connected to the mobile Internet," said Christopher. "Our Mobile Share plans are simple, easy and a great value for individuals or families with multiple mobile Internet devices."

Mobile Share plans give customers more control over how, where and on what device they use data — which has become more important as people use more data devices. You can choose to use more of your data bucket on your tablet, for example, or tap into your databucket only when needed for devices you use occasionally. And by consolidating data plans, you can take advantage of any data you currently have unused each month by efficiently sharing it across devices.

"The 'more you share, the more you save' concept is one that will resonate well with customers because of the value provided through the Mobile Share data plans themselves and in smartphone connection fees," said Roger Entner, Founder and Lead Analyst of Recon Analytics. "AT&T also is providing its customers with flexibility and choice by keeping its existing data plans and not requiring customers to move to Mobile Share unless they want to. It's a win-win for both AT&T and its customers."

To help customers track their data usage, AT&T keeps users informed with courtesy alerts as they near their data allowance for the month. Also, customers can check their usage at anytime online, through the myAT&T mobile app, or by calling *DATA# from their mobile phone.

Each data plan also includes access to more than 30,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots — the nation's largest Wi-Fi network** among wireless carriers — at no additional charge. Wi-Fi usage at public hotspots, home or office does not count toward the monthly wireless data plan usage.

Customers can learn more about the new plans and determine which plan is best for them atwww.att.com/mobileshare.

Nexus S may be getting Jelly Bean update rollout in the next few days

Posted: 18 Jul 2012 04:52 AM PDT

One of the advantages of having a Nexus device is getting (most of the time) updates before other devices. It looks like that may continue to hold true, and the highly anticipated Android 4.1 update may be coming to the Nexus S in the next couple of days.

Vodaphone Australia has said on their blog about the update:

Approved by Vodafone, roll out by Google scheduled for 1:00pm AEST, 19th July 2012. Keep an eye on our blog for further information.

then, we have SFR France saying;

However, the deployment is slightly delayed on the Nexus S! Jelly Bean should be deployed July 18, 2012!

Judging by this, we can hope to see the Jelly Bean update coming to US Nexus S devices as well. Keep an eye out, and we'll let you know about any updates on this. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
