HTC One V to be available at Cricket beginning September 2nd

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 04:46 PM PDT

When HTC unveiled its One series a while ago, it was met with what bordered on unanimous praise. The software and hardware were both lauded for their forward thinking and the devices themselves did quite well, despite some heavy interference during the release from Apple. If you’re one of those that hasn’t gotten your One phone because of budget concerns, you may want to head to a Cricket store next month. Beginning on September 2nd, Cricket will begin carrying the HTC One V, a more budget centered device with some of the same bells as its more powerful brethren but not as many whistles. While it’ll come with Beats Audio integration, HTC’s ImageSense photo processing software, as well as Cricket’s own Muve Music service, it’ll have less stupendous but still respectable hardware specs:

  • 3.7-inch Super LCD screen
  • 1 GHz Snapdragon S3 processor
  • 1,500 mAh battery
  • Unibody design

Again, while this won’t really appeal to those who need the top of the line phone, it’ll be perfect for the average consumer, particularly one with a budget. So what do you think? Is this something you’d buy for yourself or someone else? Let us know in the comments below!

Save a life, buy an app

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 11:56 AM PDT

Rest in peace to the bad guys, or, if you’re too cheap to support a developer by paying for their application, the good guys. The United States Department of Justice has gone on a killing spree, crushing three of the best-known websites and markets for Android piracy. Snappz Market, Appbucket, and Applanet have all been shut down, thanks to a new Government initiative to put an end to Android application piracy once and for all. When visited, the websites no longer have the original illegal downloads they used to, but you get a nice, shiny ‘FBI Seizure’ warning, giving you a heads-up about the fines and some sort of lecture explaining how Android piracy (or just software piracy in general) and how it’s the same thing as illegally torrenting music or movies.

Since the founding of the Android platform, piracy has been an issue, as well as on the iPhone (Cydia). In this day and age, people are – for lack of a better word – too cheap to pay for the hard work that goes into developing a mobile application. "We will continue to seize and shut down websites that market pirated apps, and to pursue those responsible for criminal charges if appropriate."Even the most talented, skilled developers can take several months to create an app, and this is something that the general public doesn’t seem to understand. For most developers, this is their only source of income – sure, some work part-time jobs, but developing is a full time job. Some development companies have lost nearly 80% of their profits due in part to websites such as Appbucket.

There are still several websites that offer illegal APK downloads; there’s only one problem, however – the apps on these websites usually aren’t the latest version, which is a problem if the version available has noticeable bugs, etc. So far, the government has only shut down three of these types of websites, but I believe that United States attorney Sally Quillian Yates puts it best:

"We will continue to seize and shut down websites that market pirated apps, and to pursue those responsible for criminal charges if appropriate."

There you have it folks. If we get word of any other websites getting shut down, we’ll let you know.

Will Amazon announce next Kindle Fire on September 6?

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 11:25 AM PDT

We just received an email from Amazon inviting us to a September 6 press conference. Considering we’re known as an Android site and not just one that covers e-readers or general tech, our interest is piqued. Why would Amazon send us an invitation?

It’s no secret that Amazon is expected to announce a new model of Kindle Fire this fall and recent rumors suggest that things could happen sooner than later.  Will it be a bigger, faster model?  What happens to the current model?  We’re pretty sure this conference has some Android implications so we’re excited to see what comes of next week’s event.

T-Mobile today announced that they’ve added another Android-based smartphone to their prepaid lineup.  Called the T-Mobile Concord, it’s a manufactured by ZTE and features 3G connectivity.  We’re not sure the user-base is going to mind, considering the $99 price point and basic Android features.

Pops changes the notification game, again

Posted: 23 Aug 2012 08:46 AM PDT

Remember a while back when we told you about Pops (Notification Themes) and how it changed the way in which you managed notifications?  At the time, it was designed so that you received special, custom notifications for services like Twitter or Facebook.  We liked it quite a bit and thought that a lot of you would enjoy changing things up.

The Isreali company is back and they have given the app a top-to-bottom overhaul.  Now, instead of tying notifications to services, it’s paired with people.  Much smarter.  Much like custom ringtones do for your phone, Pops provides a custom animation and tone for messages, emails, Twitter, Facebook, and more.  Hear that catchy jingle and see that silly video clip?  That must be your BFF saying something!

We had a chance to peek at this new Pops back in June when we sat down at Google IO and were immediately impressed with the new look.  Not only is the system designed in a smarter way than before but it’s way more polished and sexier.  Even the stock, predesigned notifications are sharper and more in line with the Android 4.0 and 4.1 aesthetics.

Custom notifications for people and not services leads to far less clutter and annoyance.

If you find yourself a big fan of Pops and want  to evangelize the app you’ll be happy to see the new Pop-out feature.  Create a notification for yourself and send it to a friend or contact and then can see first-hand what sort of stuff they can create.  If, for some reason, you do not see one among the myriad of options, use the camera and record something unique!

We don’t want to leak anything ahead of time and spoil Pops’ thunder but we’re super excited at the stuff that lies ahead.  The company has a great perspective on things and it’s beyond just putting hamster dances on your Android.

By the way, we recommend checking out the Android category.  You’ll find a really cool AndroidGuys notification that’s pretty neat stuff, if we do say so.

Boost Mobile has announced a pair of Android-powered smartphones from Samsung, both of which are due in September.  Each is a little different from the next and offers something unique to their pre-paid subscriber base.  Generally speaking, one could consider these two to be on the opposite end of the Android spectrum for Boost Mobile.

First up is the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G, an Android 4.0 experience with a a 4.5-inch display, dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 1GB RAM, and 16GB internal storage. Next up is the Galaxy Rush, another Android 4.0 smartphone, with a 3.5-inch display, 3-megapixel camera, and 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera.  Priced at a much lower $149.99, this guy should be retail stores at the end of September.

ZTE Blade III unveiled, doesn’t catch much attention

Posted: 22 Aug 2012 05:29 PM PDT

While this isn’t groundbreaking news, it seemed like it was worth getting a chuckle over reporting. Verkkokauppa.com, a Finnish retailer, has revealed the ZTE Blade III, complete with pictures and specs. The device itself looks round and sophisticated, which should appeal to some ZTE fans (the few, the proud).

The Blade III will be packing:

  • A lackluster 1GHz Qualcomm MSM7227A processor
  • Ice Cream Sandwich
  • 3.5-inch TFT display at 480×800 pixels
  • 5MP camera with LED flash
  • Front-facing shooter of unknown MP
  • A meager 200MB of internal storage, and 512MB RAM
  • MicroSD card slot
  • GSM bands with HSDPA connectivity

So obviously the Blade III isn’t going to blow anyone out of the gate. It might have in 2009, but in the age of quad-core, 4.7-inch devices, it’s definitely not catered to the power user. But it might be a good device for someone new to Android, and will launch at just €199. The Blade III most likely won’t even hit the U.S., so we’ll have to wait until someone across the pond wastes money on buys one to see if it’s a usable device. No word on a release date, but something tells us that nobody is going to rush to their local Best Buy to pick this one up anyway. Regardless, keep it locked here on AndroidGuys for all the latest news on the Blade III.

So, who else is disappointed by the specs of the ZTE Blade III? Is anyone actually planning on buying one? Drop a comment below!
