Amazon offering great savings on Sprint Android smartphones

Posted: 06 Aug 2012 01:43 PM PDT

AmazonWireless just dropped us a line to let us know that they are offering some pretty compelling deals on Sprint smartphones. If you're thinking of making the jump to the Now Network, you might want to check out some of these deals. While some of the models are a little older, their ultra-low one penny price tags are hard to pass up.  Keep in mind that new customers might be eligible for lower pricing than existing subscribers. If you'll excuse us, we're going to grab a Galaxy S III for half the normal price.

Snugg Galaxy Tab Case Cover review

Posted: 06 Aug 2012 11:16 AM PDT

You've spent a couple hundred bucks on your Samsung Galaxy Tab and now you're afraid you might scratch it or drop it.  What to do?  Spend $30 and protect that thing with style - put it in a Snugg Case Cover.

We've spent some time with both the 8.9-inch and 10.1-inch version of the Snugg Galaxy Tab 10 1 Case Cover and Flip Stand and find they're a great, practical fit.  Not only are you protecting your investment, but you're also adding some practicality to it at the same time.  Thanks to a couple of well placed folds, the Case Cover doubles as an impromptu stand.  Want to watch movies or spend some time hands free?  Bingo.

We appreciate that the cases are designed specifically for each model and have cutouts in all the right spots.  This ensures that neither your camera nor speakers are obscured.  A few magnets inside the case make it so that the case stays closed when it needs to, but are not overly strong.  Flip it open and fold back the cover flush and you'll have a nice elastic band for your hand.  Ideal for those times when you need a solid grip without covering the screen, this is also a nice way to shift the weight of the tablet.

After a few weeks of toting our tablets around we found the Snugg cases to be just as strong as ever.  We could be kinder to our tablet from time to time however the stitching has yet to fray.  We've thrown these in a backpack and set them up on desks quite a bit these last few days and see no signs of wear or tear.

You can pick up a Snugg case from the manufacturer where they also have a number of other tablet related accessories.  Like most items we review here, you'll also find them on Amazon where the ($29.99) price is identical.  If you don't have a Galaxy Tab 8.9 or Galaxy Tab 10.1 then perhaps you'll find something else among the dozens of products.

Samsung inches closer for Jelly Bean on product line, rumor suggest

Posted: 06 Aug 2012 08:58 AM PDT

Samsung is close to releasing Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for their Galaxy S III, having recently starting on a version ready for public consumption.  According to SamMobile, Samsung recently completed testing of the firmware and is currently waiting on Google's approval.

As for the Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note, things look to be moving along on that front as well.  Interestingly enough, SamMobile posits that Samsung may decide at the last moment to not release Android 4.1 to these models.  If that were to be the case they indicate that Samsung would issue a value pack update. For what it's worth, testing is said to be fine and there's no reason to suggest Samsung will not proceed with the update.

HTC could be prepping a Galaxy Note competitor for Verizon

Posted: 06 Aug 2012 07:56 AM PDT

The rumor mill has been in full swing these last few days as word of an HTC phone/tablet hybrid device could be in the works for this fall.  The word around campfire is that it's a smartphone with a 5-inch display with a resolution of 1794 x 1080 pixels

According to DigitTimes, said device could be ready to roll out between September and October. While we might initially dismiss the news outlet as being often incorrect, it does match other rumors making their rounds.

Benchmarks for an HTC 6435LVW surfaced recently which showed Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, a Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 processor, and an Adreno 320 GPU. What's more, these early numbers had multiple references to Verizon.  Considering these line up nicely with the DigiTimes report, we're pretty sure this one is legit.

Do you think HTC could have better luck than LG with a Galaxy Note competitor?  Is this Samsung's race to lose?

EDIT: Article cleaned up to remove references to HTC One X+

Samsung announces redesigned Galaxy Note 10.1

Posted: 06 Aug 2012 07:30 AM PDT

It might have taken more than half of the year to come to fruition, but Samsung today announced the redesigned Galaxy Note 10.1.  Details for the tablet include a 1.4GHz quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 10.1-inch display, 5-megapixel main camera, and a 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera.  Since we're talking "Note" here then you might already know this guy has the S Pen capability for note-taking, markups, drawing, and more.  Rounding on the specs, the Galaxy Note comes in three storage capacities, 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB, each with expandable microSD card slots.

Pricing has not been announced for the Galaxy Note yet however Samsung indicates there are three different versions of the tablet on the horizon. Look for a WiFi-only version, a WiFi-and-3G HSPA-Plus model, and a WiFi-and-LTE version launching later this year.

We'll be curious to see what next week's New York event is all about or whether or not Samsung has anything left to share.  Perhaps we'll get some U.S. pricing and availability details?
