Sony’s LT29i “Hayabusa” To Be Named Xperia TX

Posted: 12 Aug 2012 03:11 PM PDT

The international version of Sony’s Japanese Xperia GX has been suffering a crisis of identity, being known as the LT29i and also by the codename Hayabusa. But it has yet to get an official, consumer-friendly name. A leak from sources at Xperia Blog claims the phone has a name: the Sony Xperia TX. This would fit in with Sony’s new naming convention, which uses single and double letters to designate the relationship between high-end and mid-level phones. So the Xperia TX would clearly be a higher-end Xperia T.

It is said to sport a 4.6-inch HD reality 720p screen, a dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, 1GB RAM, Android 4.0 ICS, a whopping 13MP camera with HDR video, a thin 7mm profile, and a nice size battery. This is certainly shaping up to be Sony’s latest flagship model. We’re expecting to see this phone, along with the Xperia T and Xperia Tablet at IFA in Berlin later this month.

Who’s waiting for this one?

Bell Virgin Rolls Out New Smartphone Plans ($50 and $65/month)

Posted: 12 Aug 2012 01:16 PM PDT

Virgin has attempted to come up with a couple of “budget friendly” plans. The first plan is expected to cost you $50 per month while the other one at $65 per month. Here’s what you can expect to have on each respective plan.

$50 Smartphone plan ($50/month):

  • 200 anytime minutes
  • Unlimited evening and weekends starting at 6PM
  • Unlimited Canada-wide calling to 10 buddies
  • Unlimited Canada, U.S., International text and picture messaging
  • Voicemail and Caller ID
  • 100MB data, or Unlimited BlackBerry social

$65 Smartphone plan ($65/month):

  • 200 anytime minutes
  • Unlimited evening and weekends starting at 6PM
  • Unlimited Canada-wide calling to 10 buddies
  • Unlimited Canada, U.S., International text and picture messaging
  • Voicemail and Caller ID
  • 1GB data

Bell also has similar plans but offers a bonus 10 hours of Mobile TV on the $65 per month plan. These plans are available starting today for new and existing postpaid customers and will continue to be until further notice.

I actually find these plans to be expensive for what they’re giving you. 200 minutes along with 100MB’s of data is hardly enough these days, even for $50 per month. Either way, these plans are still new and I’m sure Virgin is testing out how it will be perceived by customers.

Samsung drops ICS source code for Note 10.1, Tab 10.1 and Tab 7 plus

Posted: 12 Aug 2012 12:59 PM PDT

It always brings a smile to my face when source drops for any Android device. While it has of no use to me or the average Joe, it will be put to good use by many independent developers. After all, source code means more stable custom ROM’s for us rooted users. Today Samsung has released the Ice Cream Sandwich source codes (GPL portions)  for the Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 7 Plus.

If you’re interested in the source codes for your personal needs then head on over to the source link!

How to enable NFC on the Samsung Galaxy S II

Posted: 12 Aug 2012 12:15 PM PDT

If you have a Samsung Galaxy S II phone that is running a custom Jelly Bean ROM, you have probably noticed that you do not have NFC capabilities on your device. If you would like to restore that functionality, we have good news – XDA Senior Member jthatch12 has created a hack.

This will only work on phones that had the necessary NFC hardware built into the phone. The other requirement is that the phone is running Jelly Bean. Thus far users have confirmed success on i777 and M250k/M250s devices. The hack should work on:

  • i9100 = NO
  • i9100P = YES (it’s an i9100 exactly, but with NFC. ROMs for i9100 will work, but need to be modified to show NFC settings, otherwise no NFC options will show)
  • i9100G = NO, it’s completely different from the i9100 hardware (TI-OMAP instead of Exynos). ROMs from i9100/P don’t work.
  • T989 (T-Mobile GS2) = YES, but it’s completely different from the i9100 hardware (Snapdragon S3 instead of Exynos). ROMs from i9100/P don’t work.
  • i777 (AT&T GS2) = YES, AOSP based roms have it but i9100 hellraised roms are missing it(due to NFC not being a feature of the i9100)
  • D710 (Sprint GS2) = NO

If you are interested in trying this hack out on your NFC equipped Galaxy S II, you just need to download the file from the XDA forum thread (use source link below) and then flash it onto your device from recovery mode.

Sony LT25 “Tsubasa” handset destined for several international markets

Posted: 12 Aug 2012 11:49 AM PDT

Sony is continuing work on their LT25 handset codenamed "Tsubasa" with signs pointing toward several versions being available. Indications are the Sony LT25 will be a global phone. Already a version with the model number LT25c has shown up in benchmark tests indicating it is destined for China Telecom. Other model numbers include an LT25h which will be used in international HSPA+ markets and the LT25i which will be used in international LTE markets.

If model numbers are any indication, the LT25 "Tsubasa" will be a step down from the Experia S which carries the LT26i model number. Various benchmark tests indicate the Tsubasa will have a dual-core S4 Snapdragon running at 1.5GHz mated to an Adreno 225 GPU. The screen will be running at 1280 x 720 although the size is not yet known.

Motorola Rumored To Launch DROID RAZR HD And DROID RAZR MAXX HD In October

Posted: 12 Aug 2012 08:45 AM PDT

Motorola’s upcoming DROID RAZR HD sure is doing its best to tease us isn’t it? We’ve seen a leak here and another there… a benchmark here and another there. Heck, we even know it’s on its way sooner than we think because of how it just finished taking a stroll through the FCC. But now we may have a better indication of when exactly it is to arrive. According to Hot Hardware (via our friends at DROID Life), MOTO is intent on bringing not only the DROID RAZR HD smartphone— but the DROID RAZR MAXX HD variant as well sometime in October. The rumored October launch sounds about right because of the fact the original DROID RAZR was launched around that time last year. There’s also no word on what carrier(s) it will launch with, but given Motorola’s success with its DROID RAZR line on Verizon’s network, it’s probably a safe bet it will launch there first.

Naturally, this could be pure speculation and we may see the device launch earlier or even later. But we suspect Motorola doesn’t want to wait too long— especially with Apple expected to release its new phone next month and ummmm… Samsung’s hot-selling Galaxy S III dominating the market share.

Apple’s 2010 License Offer to Samsung: Pay $30 Per Phone and $40 per Tablet

Posted: 12 Aug 2012 06:11 AM PDT

A recent document has shown that back in 2010 Apple offered licensing agreements to Samsung. The agreements would require Samsung to pay $30 per smartphone and $40 per tablet. Usually this type of information stays under wraps as companies don’t like to disclose their royalty deals with the public, however, the document was presented by the Cupertino based tech giant at their trial with Korean based Samsung. If successful, the deal would have required Samsung to pay $250 million in royalties to Apple. Now in fairness, the deal was not one sided, Apple had prepared to give Samsung a 20% discount on the mentioned deal if they would be willing to cross license some of their patents in return. As you know, Samsung denied.

The complete document revealing this information is one of many that have been made public in the current Samsung vs. Apple trial. The trial is expected to last the rest of the month, and if Apple is successful, Samsung will be required to pay $2.5 billion. I can honestly say I have no clue who’s going to win this one as Samsung has also pointed patents back at Apple and that will surely complicates things. What do you think?
