Samsung officially announces the Galaxy Note 10.1 for the U.S. Market, Available tomorrow for $499/16GB or $549/16GB

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 08:34 AM PDT

We’re live at the Samsung event in NYC and as expected, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note 10.1. The heart of this tab is the advanced S Pen with 1,024 levels of sensitivity. If you remember, when we first saw the Note 10.1, it was at Mobile World Congress, but there wasn’t a slot for the S Pen. This version has been completely revamped to include a slot, but most interesting is that when a user removes the S Pen, it activates a taskbar for quick access to optimized S Pen apps such as S Note, Adobe Photoshop Touch, and Polaris Office.

We’ve seen the S Note application in the original Galaxy Note, but this is an updated version in that it has Shape Match, which converts hand-drawn shapes into perfect versions for charts. You can even hand-write a formula and Match will solve it for you. S Note also has knowledge search engine integration so you can easily search for whatever you want by writing it with the S Pen.

The other major change from Mobile World Congress is a 1.4GHz Exynos quad-core processor (as opposed to a dual-core) and 2GB of RAM. The quad-core and extra RAM is going to make the Galaxy Note 10.1 a multitasking dream. The Multiscreen feature allows you to utilize two different applications side-by-side simultaneously. This means you can view Web pages or videos (or any other application) on one side of the screen while you’re writing notes or sketching with the S Pen on the other side of the screen. You can even capture or crop images from an app on one side and drag it to the app on the other side. For now, apps that support the Multiscreen include S Note, Internet Browser, Video Player, Email, Gallery, and Polaris Office. This is something we saw back at MWC, but will work much better with more horsepower.

You will also find Pop up Play, which was introduced in the Galaxy S III. It allows you to play back videos in a floating window that can be moved to anywhere on the screen. This makes it easy for you to watch a video and write an email at the same time.

Users will find Adobe Photoshop Touch pre-installed, a $9.99 value. It also happens to be S Pen optimized so users can control brush size and opacity by adjusting the pressure of the pen on the screen.

Don’t forget about reading books because the Note 10.1 can handle that as well. Kno’s e-textbook platform will be preloaded. This means k-12 or higher education students can download thousands of interactive textbooks. Not only that, the new Social Sharing feature lets users highlight and annotate text with the S Pen as well as share those annotations with other students and teachers. You will also find the NOOK free reading app from Barnes & Noble preloaded as well as a customized NOOK for Android widget.

Samsung has been including IR emitters along with the Peel Remote software in their most recent tablets, and the Galaxy Note 10.1 is no exception. This allows users to use the Note 10.1 as a universal remote control for their home theater and get recommended programs.

Dropbox users will be happy to know that Samsung continues their partnership by including 50GB of storage for Free for two years.

Last but not least, you will also find some of the newer features that were introduced with the Galaxy S III like Smart Stay, AllShare Play, and Group Cast.

The Galaxy Note 10.1 will be available nationwide in stores and online at retailers such as Best Buy, HH Gregg, Amazon, CDW, and TigerDirect. For those of you in New York City, you can grab one at BBY’s Union Square store beginning at noon EST today. Pricing will be $499 for 16GB or $549 for 32GB, and you will have your choice of white or dark gray. As far as accessories, they include the S Pen replacement, S Pen Holder Kit, Book Cover in gray or white, Travel Charger, USB connection Kit for thumb drives and other USB peripherals, HDMI adapter, and a Universal Desktop Dock.

As far as the hardware specs go, here’s the full list:

  • 10.1-inch WXGA (1280 x 800) LCD display + Digitizer
  • 1.4GHz Exynos quad-core processor
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 5MP rear camera
  • 1.9MP front camera
  • 16GB or 32GB of storage
  • microSD for up to an additional 32GB
  • Bluetooth 4.0 / WiFi / WiFi Direct
  • USB 2.o Host / mHL / iR LED
  • 7,000mAh battery

Game-Changing Device Hits U.S. Store Shelves Tomorrow;

New York, April 15, 2012 – Samsung Electronics America Inc., a market leader and award-winning innovator in consumer electronics, today announced its highly anticipated GALAXY Note 10.1 for the U.S. market. The device will be available for purchase tomorrow – August 16th, 2012 – across the U.S.at authorized retailers.

At a launch event in New York City, Samsung will be joined by fashion designer Zac Posen, who has created looks for the most elite stars, and acclaimed writer, producer, director Baz Luhrmann (William Shakespeare’s Romeo+Juliet, Moulin Rouge and the forthcoming The Great Gatsby). Each will provide a window into their own creative process, and how the Galaxy Note 10.1 will unleash new levels of inspiration in their work.

The GALAXY Note 10.1 extends the GALAXY Note category, building on the success of last year's worldwide hit smartphone – and delivering the functionality and precision of a pen and paper by combining the S Pen with a 10.1-inch large display.

Adobe's premium creative application, Photoshop® Touch is preloaded and optimized for Samsung's S Pen to deliver unprecedented precision and control.

The device also introduces the game changing Multiscreen feature, which allows users to actually operate two different apps side-by-side, simultaneously, on the same screen.

Thanks to a 1.4GHz quad-core processor and 2 GB RAM, the Galaxy Note 10.1 can handle it all without missing a beat.

"Our goal with the Samsung GALAXY Note 10.1 was simple – redefine the tablet experience," said Tim Baxter, President, Samsung Electronics America. "The S Pen offers both active content creation as well as passive content consumption, while the Multiscreen capability finally enables true multitasking. For the user, the resulting experience is completely new and quite unexpected."

True Multitasking with Multiscreen Feature

With GALAXY Note 10.1's Multiscreen feature, users can effortlessly utilize two different applications side-by-side simultaneously for true and easy multitasking. Users can view Web pages or videos, or launch other applications while writing or sketching ideas with the S Pen on the other half of the screen – no need to toggle back and forth between apps.

Further, users can even capture and crop images from an app on one side, and drag them to an app on the side – for enhanced creativity and productivity.

Apps supported for Multiscreen are S Note, Internet Browser, Video Player, Email, Gallery and Polaris Office . The Galaxy Note 10.1 thus meets the increasing needs of a growing mobile workforce, from interfacing with customers to creative sharing.

The GALAXY Note 10.1 also offers the Pop up Play feature first introduced on the GALAXY S III Smartphone. With it, users can play back videos in a floating window that can be overlaid anywhere on the screen, providing a "picture in picture" experience. New for the GALAXY Note 10.1 is the ability to adjust the size of the video window.

In addition, GALAXY Note 10.1 offers a mini-apps tray that can launch a selection of mini-app on top of others apps and freely moved around the screen. These include Alarm, S Note, Music Player, Email, Calculator, World Clock.

S Pen & S Note Make it Personal

The S Pen is embedded directly into a slot in the device and when removed, activates a taskbar with quick access to optimized S Pen apps such as S Note, Adobe® Photoshop® Touch and Polaris Office.  Alternatively, users can easily set their preferred application to be launched instantly.

The S Note application is a unique tool that gives users the ability to combine notes and sketches with other digital content in ready-to-use templates. Shape Match converts hand-drawn shapes such a square and lines into clean and perfect versions – perfect for creating charts.formula Match can actually solve formulas hand-written with the S Pen.

S Note is also integrated with knowledge search engines so that users can search for content, obtain information, and easily drag and drop content onto S Notes without having to switch between screens.

Adobe Photoshop Touch – Edit Photos Like Never Before

Adobe® Photoshop® Touch, normally a $9.99 purchase, is preloaded on the GALAXY Note 10.1. Further, since it is optimized for S Pen, users are able to control brush size and opacity by just adjusting the pressure of the pen on the screen.

"Samsung's GALAXY Note 10.1, with its pressure-sensitive S Pen, truly unleashes the power of Adobe Photoshop Touch and provides a great tool for creative expression," said Winston Hendrickson, vice president products, Creative Media Solutions, Adobe. "More than ever, people around the world want to create, wherever and whenever inspiration strikes. We're excited to be working with Samsung and look forward to seeing what they with the S Pen and Photoshop Touch."

Users can also use popular Photoshop features such as layers, selection tools, adjustments, and filters to create mind-blowing images, or use the high quality GALAXY Note 10.1 camera to fill an area on a layer with the unique camera fill feature.

With Photoshop Touch, it's also a snap to add or remove people or objects from a photo, or blend two photos together.

To get users started quickly, in-depth step-by-step tutorials are provided to help users learn techniques the pros use for great-looking results.

Photoshop Touch is integrated with Adobe Creative Cloud providing users free access to powerful file syncing and sharing features and 2GB of storage space. Files can be synched to the Creative Cloud and opened in Photoshop on the desktop or laptop for further refinement.

The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 will be priced at $349 which is $100 more than a wifi only version of the tablet.

It appears Verizon and Samsung have made some slight improvements to the device since we reviewed an earlier version. The processor is now running at 1.2 GHz compared to the original 1.0 GHz and Bluetooth has been bumped up from 3.0 to 4.0. The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 is not quite the powerhouse tablet of the Google Nexus 7, but it does have a nice set of features. Whether the ability to connect to Verizon's 4G LTE is enough to justify the extra cost remains to be seen. Hit the break for the full press release from Verizon.

Supposed Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Bezel Smiles For The Camera

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 05:02 AM PDT

We know the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is very much real and on it’s way, but the actual design of the upcoming device is a mystery to say the least. Well friends, we may have an idea of what this thing may look like. A supposed picture of the Galaxy Note 2′s bezel has surfaced and low and behold— shows a squarish design as opposed to the curvy profile we’d previously expected. On the other hand, the bezel “seems” to match up well with the device’s rumored 5.5-inch screen.

Naturally this may be just some made up image, but boy you gotta admit— it sure looks real!

Apple survey reveals top reasons why customers who considered an iPhone bought an Android

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 03:38 AM PDT

As this Apple vs. Samsung lawsuit makes its rounds, we sure have been treated by numerous leaked documents from the court battle on a daily basis. This most recent document has Apple putting together a percentage graph showing why consumers considering an iPhone went with Android instead. There’s no need for me to give you the percentages as you can see for yourself, but it is worthy to note that the most common reason was that the customer wanted to stay with their current wireless provider. While most think that the main attraction to Android are its advantages over iOS such as a bigger screen, free turn-by-turn navigation, Google integration, etc. One has to remember that the iPhone was only available on AT&T until Verizon finally got its hands on it last year, thus the reason for the 48%.

I honestly don’t see why Apple even did this and used this in their court preceding. I don’t see how this helps their case, and I also have to mention to take these numbers with a grain of salt as we don’t know how big the sample size was. Either way, it’s still a bit interesting to see these numbers, right?

You can expect more and more documents from this court battle to leak out as the days and weeks go by, and we’ll be sure to inform you as soon as we know.
