HTC starts teasing their big announcements on Twitter

Posted: 18 Sep 2012 10:35 AM PDT

HTC has taken to Twitter to tease their new announcements which take place less than 24 hours from now.  The image you see here is what just went live online, promptly sending nerds into a frenzy.

Whether this is a phone or tablet, it’s not quite clear.  Nevertheless, we’re amped and cannot wait to see what else is in store for the September 19 event.  Oh, and before you get all conspiracy theory on us about this being a tease of a 1080p device, remember that HTC uses the 10:08 time for many, many devices. That’s not to say we wouldn’t love one though!  Here’s to hoping for Android goodies.

The 10:08 likely doesn’t mean anything.

Rovio provides first gameplay footage of Bad Piggies

Posted: 18 Sep 2012 10:24 AM PDT

Rovio has thrown a video online which gives us our first look at the gameplay for their forthcoming Bad Piggies.  The short clip, embedded below, actually looks like a completely different game than we were initially expecting.  Rather than going after the birds or their eggs in a simple reversal of fortune, this one seems to be more puzzling and challenging, and maybe something we’d like to revisit over and over.  Look for Bad Piggies to arrive on September 27.

Amazon offering GameCircle APIs to Android developers

Posted: 18 Sep 2012 10:09 AM PDT

Much of what makes the Amazon Kindle Fire HD such a compelling device comes in the user experience and the great stuff that you don’t get from other standard tablets.  One such feature, GameCircle, makes for  a great gaming experience that allows for leaders, achievements, and other stats.  What’s more, Amazon is now giving this capability to Android developers who want to take advantage of some free APIs.

  • A new Games Library that give players a home base for their game collection, letting them immediately see all their games, sorted by the most recently played.
  • Social Gaming features that let players connect with other GameCircle players or import their Facebook Friends to compare achievements and compete for higher scores. Detailed friend-to-friend comparison pages also help players find out how they stack up against their friends.

As a developer, all you need to do to get these features for your game is to add GameCircle achievements or leaderboards.  Best of all, these services are free and easy to integrate. Once integrated, your game will automatically feature player stats, game library content and leverage all the new social features and game discovery mechanisms.  Select GameCircle games are also highlighted in Amazon Appstore, giving your game a chance to get additional visibility among Kindle Fire customers.

If you are an Android developer and want to integrate the new gaming features, head to Amazon’s website for more details!

Pocket 4.2 arrives with Android-exclusive “Listen” feature

Posted: 18 Sep 2012 08:56 AM PDT

Pocket, perhaps one of our favorite Android apps of all time, has just seen its latest version hit the Google Play store.  The big change this time around is the ability to have your saved Pocket materials read out loud to you.  Called (wait for it) “Listen”, it’s exclusive to Android, leverages the text-to-speech engine, and can be changed (speed, style) to taste.  Oh, the 4.2 update also features a few other enhancements and bug fixes…

NEW

  • Pocket's "Listen" feature: Have your articles read aloud to you using Android's built in Text-To-Speech feature.
UPDATED
  • Manage Site Subscription feature now working on all versions of Android.
  • Improved full-screen animation in Reader.
  • No longer shortening URL when Viewing in Browser, sharing to Evernote, or copying to clipboard.
  • Minor UI updates.
FIXED
  • ZTE Blade crash when opening an article.
  • Blank help screen on Jelly Bean.
  • After long pressing a link in the Reader and selecting "Read Later," archiving/favoriting and other actions would occur on the new link instead of the currently opened link.
  • Other minor bug fixes.

If you have not downloaded Pocket yet, then you’re missing out.  Head to Google Play and grab it for free!

Samsung pours cold water on Galaxy S IV rumor

Posted: 18 Sep 2012 06:42 AM PDT

Samsung doesn’t plan to announce the Galaxy S IV at Mobile World Congress 2013, at least not officially.  Speaking from a Twitter account yesterday, Samsung’s Samsung Tomorrow  advised that yesterday’s hot rumor was just that, a rumor.

If you’re not keen on your Korean, the statement above can be translated to “Please note that some media reported speculation that the Galaxy S Ⅲ subsequent models will be released “in a simple rumor is not true. Fixed’m not doing anything, why spread these rumors?”

Things seemed pretty strange to us yesterday when we first learned of the rumor, and we didn’t know how much credibility to put into the claim.  Considering the Galaxy S III is selling like crazy right now, Samsung would cannibalize its own sales if word officially got out that something bigger and better was coming soon.  Of course, that’s actually the case as we fully anticipate a Galaxy S IV (or S 4) in 2013.  What’s more, we would be willing to bet that Samsung goes with a standalone event in the same manner as this year’s model.

LG Optimus G to hit global markets in October

Posted: 18 Sep 2012 06:31 AM PDT

LG today re-announced its quad-core Optimus G, confirming it for a Korean release next week, followed by a global rollout in October.  Yes, this is the same handset introduced in late August.  LG, for its part, decided today would be a better time for unveiling some of its key user experience features.

Because the handset runs Android, the Optimus G can handle multi-tasking.  LG, wanting to push boundaries, has introduced "cross-tasking" which lets users handle complex tasks across multiple apps simultaneously without having to compromise other tasks.

Here’s a handful of  examples of what LG has done to create and engaging experience for the Optimus G:

  • QSlide Function shows two different screens simultaneously on one display. As it doesn't just show a part of the screen but the entire screen of both functions, the user can complete two tasks concurrently -– such as sending a text message or searching the web while watching a video;
  • Live Zooming enhances the video-watching experience as users can zoom in up to five times while the video is being streamed for a close-up of one's child while watching a recorded video from a school recital;
  • Dual Screen Dual Play not only allows mirroring between the smartphone and a TV, it also has the ability to display different content on each screen wirelessly. For example, a slide presentation can be displayed on the TV while the Optimus G shows the accompanying speaking notes;
  • QuickMemo allows users to write, draw, or jot a memo with their finger directly on the captured screen for sharing instantly with others as an attachment or a URL. The QuickMemo can also be used as an overlay feature – like jotting down a number using the QuickMemo and directly dialing the number while the number is on the top layer;
  • Screen Zooming allows for the zooming in and out of lists in music player, email, text messages and photo gallery. It also offers the ability to change the font size and screen layout;
  • Application Link launches preset applications (email, calendar, weather, etc.)  when the alarm is turned off -– making preparation time in the morning go a little faster with all the information on your screen;
  • Icon Personalizer allows users the ability to customize icons by editing size and adding images so the most frequently used apps can be most easily accessible.

Getting back to the hardware, for a moment, the Optimus G features some cutting-edge technology, including a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor with 1.5GHz Quad-Core Krait CPUs and LTE.  Additional details for the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone include a 4.7-inch WXGA True HD IPSPlus 1280 x 768 pixel display, 2GB DDR RAM, 32GB internal storage, and a 2100mAh battery.  There are two cameras on the Optimus G, a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera and a 13.0-megapixel shooter on the rear.  According to LG, however, some markets will see an 8.0-megapixel camera in its place.

RAZR i already has a long battery – and when you set up the SMARTACTIONS™ battery savings rule your phone will automatically adjust to squeeze more out of each charge. Whether you want to maximize your last ounce of power, or prevent your phone from ringing during a meeting, SMARTACTIONS will automatically trigger specific actions.
