Listen to AndroidGuys #129 “99 Problems and They’re All First World”

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 01:48 PM PDT

RECORDED LIVE SEPT. 20, 2012

For the first time in months, the entire gang gets together to form the Android Podcast Voltron.  Topics this week include LG’s Optimus G and the problem(s) it might face in the United States, HTC’s lack of an Android announcement, and the reason we don’t yet have a Droid Incredible X.

Additional subjects on the agenda include the impact that Windows Phone 8 will have on Android and whether HTC needs Microsoft more than the other way around.  We also talk about the Kindle Fire HD, how it fits in the 2012 tablet game, and whether we’d tell mom to buy one.

Of course, we also dig in a bit on the iPhone 5 and how it matters to Android in the short and long terms. Finally, we discuss the Galaxy Note II and its potential successes here in the United States.

The final segment, as always, is dedicated to highlighting new and notable apps we like.

Sony Xperia V may not arrive until early December

The Sony Xperia V is expected to arrive in early December, according to a Swedish retailer who has a track record for knowing such things.  Dustin.se is listing the handset now with a pre-order price of SEK 4,299 + VAT, (pre-VAT price of £404, €508 and $656 US) and a December 3 launch.  Considering that CES is just a few weeks afterward, it stands to reason that an educated consumer might skip on the Xperia V in hopes of something more powerful in the new year.

Of course, we don’t even expect to see this handset come stateside with any carrier support.  Our instinct tells us to look for an unlocked GSM model, much like other Sony models.

Pantech reveals the Pantech Vega R3, a Galaxy Note II competitor

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 01:10 PM PDT

Pantech is not the leading mobile phone brand in the world, but there’s no doubt in it that they are working really hard to attain a proper place in the smartphone market. First they were known as a maker of low-end or mid-end Android phones, but then we recently saw the Pantech Magnus, and it told us that Pantech is entering the real smartphone market. Now, Pantech officially revealed the Pantech Vega R2 in South Korea, a smartphone with a 5.3 Inch display, and a threat to the famous Samsung Galaxy Note II.

We know that South Korea is the home of Samsung, one of the leading brands in the world, so it’s not going to be easy for the Vega R3 to take on the Note II. However, it comes with a 5.3 inch HD display, Android 4.0.4, a Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor, 13MP rear camera and 2MP front-facing camera for video chatting, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory, and a 2,600 mAh battery. Though it’s running on Ice Cream Sandwich, but we can expect a Jelly Bean update anytime soon.

It will be released in South Korea by all the major carriers, but the sad thing is we don’t know when it will hit other markets, especially US. So let’s hope Pantech will also launch this masterpiece in US and UK markets as well.

If Pantech launch it in USA, would you prefer buying it or the Galaxy Note II? Tell us about it in the comment box below.

Huawei hedging bets against Android

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 08:37 AM PDT

Chinese hardware maker Huawei has confirmed that is it is exploring its own mobile operating system as a backup in the event it must walk away from Android.   Just as ZTE is doing with Mozilla’s Firefox OS, Huawei is planning on ways to augment its Android portfolio with other platforms.  In some cases this may mean Window Phone 8, in others it may be an internal OS.

“Whatever consumers like, we’ll develop.  We’re also devoting resources into coming up with a phone operating system based on our current platform in case other companies won’t let us use their system one day.” - Huawei’s  CEO, Wan Biao, to Reuters

It’s nearly impossible to imagine Google not “letting” Huawei use its Android platform as it’s open source and freely adaptable.  On the other hand, this could just be Huawei’s way of hinting at a forked version of Android, or something altogether different.
