RadioShack outlines branded no-contract service plans

Posted: 04 Sep 2012 01:05 PM PDT

RadioShack has confirmed the recent whispers that they will be offering their brand of wireless service by today announcing new prepaid plans. Piggybacking off of Leap Wireless’s network (Sprint), the RadioShack plans start as low as $25 for feature phones and $50 for smartphones.

For their money, smartphone users will get unlimited calls, text messages, and 1GB of full-speed data. Once the data cap is reached, the speeds are subsquently throttled. Those who need a bit more value can opt for the $60 plan which offers 2.5GB of data on top of the same calling and messaging. All smartphone plans will also include access to Muve Music, a Leap service.

Phones purchases under the RadioShack plan will come bundled with 8GB microSD cards which equate to roughly 6,000 songs. The first model to be offered with the fledgling network, the Huawei Mercury Ice, will retail for $150 and feature a 1GHz processor, 4-inch display, and 8-megapixel camera.

POLL: Do you bother to listen to voicemail?

Posted: 04 Sep 2012 12:18 PM PDT

Pop quiz, hotshot.  You pick up your phone and see three missed calls and two messages.  What do you do?  If you’re like a growing number of folks, you don’t even bother listening to voicemail any more.

What’s your use case?  Do you need to listen to a message to understand that mom wants you to call?  Is Caller ID enough for you to know who rang while you were watching the season finale of Breaking Bad?

Head below and leave your mark in our very unscientific poll.  Once you’re done, move to the comments and tell us your story.  Is there someone you always listen to?  How about someone you never listen to?

HTC hosting September 19 event, expect new Android goodies!

Posted: 04 Sep 2012 11:45 AM PDT

HTC, in typical fall fashion, is hosting an event later this month where we hope to see new Android devices and/or services.  This year’s gala takes place in New York on September 19, right in the thick of a bunch of mobile get-togethers. First Motorola, then Amazon, then Apple, then Motorola again… and now HTC less than a day later.

It’s entirely possible that there will be a number of Windows Phone 8 stuff, so we’re going to cross our fingers that we get Android.  Considering the invitation looks to show an Android unlock button, we’re fairly positive we’ll have something.

There have been a number of recent HTC leaks and rumors that pertain to Android, and any one of them becoming official would suit us just fine.  What with the 5-inch 1080p HD phone, the return to tablets, and the beefier HTC One X, we’re anxious to see what HTC has for us.

What would you like to see HTC announce at the September 19 event?

Sony Xperia T found with AT&T branding

Posted: 04 Sep 2012 08:45 AM PDT

In a potential sign of things to come, an image of Sony’s new flagship Android smartphone, the Xperia T, has been found online with AT&T branding.

Take a really close look across the bottom of the handset and you’ll see the Ma Bell logo right below the navigation buttons.  Phones4U has listed the picture you see above however they make no reference of any particular carrier details.

As AndroidCentral points out, the back of the device appears a little different from its international counterpart, likely a way to allow for AT&T 4G LTE connectivity.

Perhaps we’ve got another AT&T announcement to look forward to in the near future?

AT&T’s LG P870 ‘Escape’ leaks

Posted: 04 Sep 2012 08:28 AM PDT

Yet another mid-level Android for AT&T has been leaked online, this time in the form of an LG P870 ‘Escape’.  The team over at DroidDog have picked up the first details of the handset which looks to include a dual-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB RAM, a 4-inch (960×540) display, and a 5-megapixel camera.  Presumably, this Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich handset also offers support for AT&T’s 4G LTE network.

Our gut tells us that this one runs $99 or less when it arrives, maybe hovering around half that price.  Look for more details over the coming weeks.

Lenovo outs trifecta of tablets at IFA

Posted: 04 Sep 2012 06:00 AM PDT

With all the big Samsung announcements, we almost overlooked a trio of Android tablets that Lenovo showed off at IFA last week. Lenovo looks to be taking some shots at Asus with these devices, as two of them have keyboard docks. But enough about friendly market competition, let’s get into the good stuff – specs!

First up is the IdeaTab S2110, which is being hailed as the flagship device of the line. It’s rocking a 10.1-inch, 1280 x 800 HD display, Ice Cream Sandwich1GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, and a 5MP rear camera. Surprisingly, it’s running on a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, and not the Tegra 3 that we’ve been seeing in newer tablets.

As mentioned, the device also features a keyboard dock, which doubles the battery life from an estimated 10 hours, to over 20 hours. Other specs include a 1.3MP front-facing camera, micro-SD card slot, mini-HDMI out, Bluetooth 4.0, and a built-in FM radio. The IdeaTab S2110 can be yours for $399.

Next up is the IdeaTab A2109, featuring a smaller, 9-inch 1280 x 800 display, ICS, 16GB of internal storage, micro-SD card slot, and mini-HDMI out support. It also has that snazzy keyboard dock, just like its older cousin, but here’s where it gets interesting. While the screen is smaller, the A2109 is packing that quad-core Tegra 3 beast that we mentioned. Even with the faster processor, this 9-incher comes in at a lower price point than the S2110, at just $299.

Last but not least, the IdeaTab A2107 packs all the same specs as the A2109, but with a 7-inch, 1280 x 800 HD display. There’s no word on whether this one will have a keyboard dock, due to its smaller form factor. Pricing is up in the air as well, although it’s expected that the A2107 will come in at around $199-$249, putting it in direct competition with the Nexus 7.

So, are you impressed with Lenovo’s latest offerings? Sad that none of them will ship with Jelly Bean? Let us know in the comments!

Updated Paypal app, new UI

Posted: 04 Sep 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Paypal recently updated their app to version 4.0.0.1., bringing us a brand new UI and bringing the web payment solution’s mobile client more into line with Android’s design language. We also get a new functionality surrounding account management as well as sending and requesting money. Paypal calls it “the features that matter to you most.”

Compared to the old interface this is has a much better look and feel to it. The new update also shows present and available balances, which I thought should have been there anyway.   Overall I like the new changes to the Paypal App! What do you guys and gals think? Let us know in the comments below!
