Sergey Brin shows off Google Glass product in new interview

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 10:39 AM PDT

The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday on an opportunity they had to try out Google's new wearable computing device dubbed Google Glass. You may recall the last big show by Google of the device they are working on was back in the summer when the glasses played a major role in the keynote address for Google I/O. Since then, Google's internal research lab, Google X, has been quietly working on the device. Possibly as a response to Apple's big announcement this week, Google arranged for the new glasses to show up on some models during a New York fashion show over the weekend and they now gave access to WSJ writer Spencer E. Ante for a quick spin. A video of Google co-founder Sergey Brin demonstrating some features of the glasses with Ante is available after the break.

The glasses are reported to be very lightweight with a camera built into the frame, a heads up display that will appear over the wearer's right eye, and built-in microphones. Ultimately, the device will function much like a smartphone. Using voice-activated commands, users will be able to take pictures, record video, send messages, use Google Maps, and yes, even make a phone call. Most of this functionality is still in the development phase, so it is not entirely clear how well it will work in real-world applications.

Brin thinks the key long-term potential for the device is the ability to access information in the digital world without disrupting the real world. For example, he talked about the ability to play with his kids while the glasses took a picture every ten seconds. That meant he could continue playing instead of getting his phone out and bringing his interaction to a halt.

Google plans to release a version next year for buyers who were willing to pay $1,500 on pre-order. Success of the product will likely depend on the ability of Google to drive that price down. The verdict is still out on the functions that will be available and how well they will work, but this early look at them is promising.  Brin thinks technology like Google Glass is the wave of the future and he expects "lots and lots of people will be using technology like this in years to come."

Oppo is readying the Find 5, could be the first smartphone with a 1080p display

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 08:46 AM PDT

China-based Oppo seems to be ahead of the curve lately. They launched the world’s thinnest smartphone called the Oppo Finder, and now they are looking to launch the first smartphone with a 1080p display called the Find 5. It also looks like this one may classify as the world’s thinnest quad-core smartphone.

It’s still in the prototype stage and it will boast a 5-inch 1920 x 1080 display at 441ppi. That blows away everything available now, and probably even the soon to be announced iPhone 5. Other major notables are that it will feature a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 12MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, 2500mAh battery, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Since it’s in the prototype stage we have no idea on pricing or when this puppy will be released.

Samsung Bulgaria Claims The Galaxy Ace 2 And Galaxy S Advance Smartphones Will Not Get Android 4.0 Update… Will Go Straight To Jelly Bean Instead

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 08:11 AM PDT

Samsung Bulgaria has just provided an interesting tidbit of news for owners of the Galaxy Ace 2 and Galaxy S Advance smartphones. According to the gang at GSM Arena, when asked if both devices would get Android 4.0 on its Facebook page, Samsung Bulgaria surprised all and confirmed both devices would not be getting Ice Cream Sandwich— instead both would be updated to Jelly Bean. Of course there’s the understandable speculation that Samsung Bulgaria may be out of its mind and is providing incorrect information. However if this is true (and that’s a BIG if), then Samsung is confirming its intentions of being the top Android manufacturer when it comes to updating and providing support for its devices.

While this is exciting and all, first things’ first— we need to see Samsung roll out the Jelly Bean update for its flagship device first. Once that’s done, then we’ll wait and see if or when Samsung rolls out the Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy Ace 2 and Galaxy S Advance smartphones.

ViewSonic Introduces The Android-Powered VSD220 “Smart Display” Monitor

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 07:29 AM PDT

So you own a brand spanking new Mac… errr— Windows or Linux desktop PC and you need to compliment the new toy with a shiny new monitor? Just like we told you about sometime in May, respected manufacturer ViewSonic has just the monitor for you. Known as the VSD220 “Smart Display”, this monitor has a whopping 22-inch screen and a 1080p resolution as the first obvious features that pop out when looking at the monitor. While those features are nice and all, the real kicker is the VSD220 monitor is more of a “smart monitor” and actually operates through Android 4.0. Yes, you read that right— the ViewSonic VSD220 is an Android-based monitor. Among the additional features are  TI-OMAP4 dual-core processor, 8GB of storage and a 1.2MP built-in web camera.

A device of this type surely must cost a king’s ransom, right? Well it’s not as much as you’d think since the device is now listed on ViewSonic’s website for $543, though ViewSonic has already pledged the monitor will be much lower in price (around $400) once it’s released sometime next month.

Samsung expects Galaxy S III sales to hit 30 million in 2012, Galaxy Note II to hit 20 million by next year

Posted: 12 Sep 2012 06:28 AM PDT

While speaking to Korean news agency, Yonhap, Samsung’s head of mobile JK Shin said that he expects Galaxy S III sales to hit 30 million by year’s end. That’s a pretty big deal when you consider the Galaxy S II peaked at 20 million. The Galaxy Note II will also show amazing growth as compared to the original. The original moved 10 million units, but the new version will double that by hitting 20 million. JK Shin doesn’t expect that to happen this year though, but it would still be amazing. If you’re doing the math, that’s 50 million units between the two phones.

Right now Samsung is the leading smartphone manufacturer, but I’m sure Apple has something up their sleeve with today’s iPhone announcement. The iPhone is always successful, but Apple always seems to get a bigger push every two years when they announce a bigger update. It seems like this war has only just begun.

Mark Zuckerberg regrets using HTML5 for mobile, promises native Android app

Posted: 11 Sep 2012 10:13 PM PDT

At TechCrunch’s Disrupt San Francisco conference today, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg made it clear that he was sincerely disappointed with the performance of his company’s Facebook applications.

“The biggest mistake we made as a company was betting too much on HTML5 instead of native… We burnt two years. Native is going to be the approach that we go with for iOS and Android.”

A dedicated Facebook app for Android is exciting to think about, considering the current application is essentially a repackaged version of the mobile website. As a result, its performance is less than stellar. Its instability is one the major flaws, and explains why I don’t have it installed on any of my devices.

There was no time frame given for when we can expect to see the new application launch. Instead, Zuckerberg gave the all to vague cliche, “It will be ready when it’s ready.”
