SIM-less Sony Xperia T may not be available until January

Posted: 16 Sep 2012 02:34 PM PDT

Earlier this month Sony commited to making their new Sony Xperia T available to UK markets before the end of September. Details are still being worked out, but it should be sometime between September 27th and the 29th when buyers will finally be able to get their hands on a unit. One new detail that has emerged is that the version slated to be available this month will be tied to specific carriers or a couple major retailers. A SIM-free version of the phone is not expected until three to four months later in January 2013. By then, the Xperia T will likely no longer be a high-end device in the smartphone market. Sony has still not revealed any information regarding a release date for North American markets.

Google offers new Java to Objective-C source code translator

Posted: 16 Sep 2012 02:15 PM PDT

Google announced a new open-source tool intended for developers with the release of a translator to convert Java source code to Objective-C source code. The new tool, named J2ObjC, means developers can include Java code in the build process for an iOS application. Ideally, developers will write their non-UI code in Java, functions like data access or application logic, and then share it with the target system's build. Google indicates the new tool will work with popular build tools Xcode and Make.

As Google explains on their open source blog, J2ObjC is not an emulator but instead converts Java classes to Objective-C classes that can then be used in the iOS Foundation Framework. With full Java 6 language support and most runtime features, this should make it easier for developers working on applications intended for multiple platforms.

Anyone interested in more details on the project or to download the tool's files and instructions on use can hit the source link.

Samsung Publishes Anti-iPhone 5 Ad in National Print Ads

Posted: 16 Sep 2012 01:10 PM PDT

We all know that there’s no love lost between Samsung and Apple. So how does Samsung rebound from that paralyzing $1 billion verdict? They did so by getting back to basics, touting features of their Galaxy S III against the soon-to-be-released iPhone 5 in a print ad. Appearing today in national newspapers, Samsung is flaunting its flagship phone mano a mano against the iPhone 5, prizefight style. The only thing missing is that booming voice from Michael Buffer. In what initially appears to be a blowout “win”, it’s actually a little biased marketing favoring Samsung. Samsung backhandedly and conveniently left out the iPhone 5′s exclusive features while listing the Galaxy S III’s extensive list. Readers that come across this ad will generally fall into two categories: They’ll either not notice what Samsung did here thus making the Galaxy S III appear superior or they will notice that there are a few features missing from the iPhone 5 side and formulate their own opinion of the sneaky marketing by Samsung. What do you think – good move, bad move, or pretty much as expected in the cut-throat mobile device market?

HTC’s upcoming “Ph-ablet” device heading to Verizon with 1080p display and quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor

Posted: 15 Sep 2012 07:51 PM PDT

HTC’s first attempt to challenge Samsung’s “ph-ablet” (phone/tablet) device in the Galaxy Note II has surfaced via a leaked photo. Code named as the HTC DIx, this device will feature a whopping 1080p display along with a pixel density of 480ppi. There’s indication that the device will don a 5″ screen, although I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to be a little bit bigger than that once it’s officially announced. The DIx will also feature Qualcomm’s new 1.5GHz quad-core S4 processor along with 1.5GB’s of RAM.

The leaked photo above clearly shows Verizon’s red accent color that’s usually phone on their phones. A release date is still unknown for this device so keep your eye out for further news. Would this be a device you guys would be interested in? One thing’s for sure, with that high of a ppi, I sure hope HTC packed it with one hell of a battery. Sound off in the comments!

HP Blender smartphone running Android found on GLBenchmark

Posted: 15 Sep 2012 07:29 PM PDT

HP appears to be on track to re-enter the smartphone market with an Android powered device based on some results discovered on GLBenchmark. HP has had its share of problems with its Palm unit and webOS, so the re-entry into the smartphone market is a positive move for them. The HP device found on GLBenchmark goes by the model name Blender and is listed as having a Qualcomm S4 Snapdragon dual-core processor running at 1.5GHz. The cpu is paired with a 1366×720 resolution display and powers Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. While no information on a release date is available, the discovery of a device going through the GLBenchmark process comes on the heels of HP's CEO Meg Whitman talking about HP's return to the smartphone field.
