Motorola backtracks on software updates: Atrix 4G and Photon 4G likely to be denied ICS

Posted: 22 Sep 2012 02:19 PM PDT

Software updates are a dreaded nuisance for any smartphone owner. Today, Motorola has solidified our stance on the issue, as it has retracted numerous of its previous upgrade promises. The new timeline pushes the Android 4.0 update for the DROID XYBOARD 8.2, DROID Bionic and Motorola XOOM Family Edition back until next quarter. Additionally, Atrix 4G, Atrix 2 and Photon 4G owners may be out of luck. Whereas the previous timeline showed the devices would be receiving their Ice Cream Sandwich update in Q3, the new list only entails that “further plans [are] coming soon.” What this means exactly is still unclear.

While this wasn’t completely unexpected, it’s a sad day for early adopters. Constantly manufacturers are revealing new groundbreaking hardware with behind-the-curve software. As an Atrix 4G owner, I’m ashamed that such a travesty couldn’t be avoided. The phone may have launched with Android 2.2 Froyo, but underneath lie the internals of the world’s first superphone. I’ll continue to use the handset, but Motorola needs to realize that it’s this type of thing that will prevent me from being a returning customer. For the full run-down, we’ve included the official upgrade timeline below.

HTC Enticing Apple iPhone Owners To Trade Their Phones In For A One X With Free urBeats Headset

Posted: 22 Sep 2012 01:09 PM PDT

If you find that you’re sick of the Apple iPhone and are interested in grabbing yourself an Android phone instead, HTC has the incentive to entice customers to come on over to the wild side. The manufacturer has presented a solid promotion where customers can trade in their iPhone (in fully functional and good condition, of course) and buy a One X instead, with a side of $99 urBeats headsets thrown in for free. Naturally customers may not expect to get top dollar for the iPhone compared to online listings like Craigslist or eBay, but you gotta admit— the idea of having the awesome One X with a sweet headset may be too good  of a deal to pass up.

The promotion ends on October 21st, so those of you iPhone owners on the fence about switching over will have some time to think about it. Hopefully you’ll find a reason or two to help make the decision a little easier.

Verizon’s Galaxy S III Developer Edition is now on sale

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 08:52 PM PDT

Back in early July, Verizon wireless customers started getting their pre-ordered Samsung Galaxy S3′s, only to discover that Verizon had done the thing that they feared most: Lock the Bootloader. Later Samsung announced they would offer a Developer Edition that would have an open bootloader so that users could modify it to their whims.

Now, over two months later, the Developer Edition of Samsung’s flagship  has arrived for a whopping price of $649 for the 32GB blue version or $599 for the 16GB blue version. A little much for a phone? Now, that the regular phone has a one-click unlock app for the bootloader, there really is no reason for anyone to buy this new version of the bestselling device.

Samsung Galaxy Note II Rumored for European Release In Next Two Weeks

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 07:27 PM PDT

If you’ve been following the updates on the Samsung Galaxy Note II, you know that it’s one beast of a piece of hardware. Granted, it’s one of those devices that you either love or hate, but can 10 million owners be wrong? And just like movie sequels, you can bet the second offering of the Note will try to appeal to those that weren’t early adopters, as well as the faithful.

Today we’re learning that the 1.6GHz quad-core, 5.5-inch Super AMOLED HD, 2GB RAM, Jelly Bean beast will ship “in the next two weeks” in Europe. The launch plans are rumored as follows:

  • Germany – September 27
  • Italy – September 28
  • Netherlands – October 1-2
  • France – October 1-2
  • United Kingdom – October 1-2

Just keep in mind that these dates are merely rumors at this point and should be taken like all rumors, with cautious optimism. I’ll certainly give this device a serious look come this November.
