Study Shows Android Tablet Market Share Jumping to 48%, iPad Down To 52%

Posted: 02 Oct 2012 06:47 PM PDT

This image has no alt text

Apple’s foothold over the tablet market may finally be slipping. According to new data by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, Android tablet market share has finally risen to a respectable 48%, with around 21% of that due to Kindle Fire sales. Apple’s iPad slipped from 81% the previous year, down to only 52% this year even after a successful iPad 3 launch.

Although it can be argued that the Amazon’s Kindle Fire isn’t really an Android tab — even though it technically runs on the OS, the absence of the Play Store and Google services places it in a strange category of its own. Keep in mind this data doesn’t yet factor in Nexus 7 or the new line of Kindle Fire HD’s, but we are confident this number will skyrocket by the end of this year, moving into 2013. Apple execs must be so pissed right now.

Sprint’s Galaxy Note 2 and Pair of 4G LTE Equipped Galaxy Tab 2 10.1′s Appear At The FCC

Posted: 02 Oct 2012 06:30 PM PDT

Over the weekend, we saw a few Samsung Galaxy Note 2 variants pass through the FCC but one of the top 4 carriers was missing out from the fun: Sprint. Today, you can rest assured that the Sprint Galaxy Note 2 will be arriving around the same time as others, with the SPH-L900 appearing at the FCC with Sprint compatible radio bands.

But that’s not all. An additional 2 Sammy devices were also revealed — the SPH-P500 and SCH-i915. More than likely these will be a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 variants for Sprint and Verizon, equipped with 4G LTE radios for ultimate portability. Anyone interested?

Android powers the smartphone that powers the new digital ads in the latest edition of Entertainment Weekly

Posted: 02 Oct 2012 03:09 PM PDT

Entertainment Weekly and TV network the CW are testing out the future of print advertising with the introduction of digital ads in the latest issue of the news and gossip rag. Upon opening to the page featuring the ad, users are greeted with video clips from the CW’s fall lineup followed by a livestream of tweets pertaining to the shows. Upon opening the page that houses the ad, Mashable discovered a full-fledged, albeit rather limited, 3G smartphone powered by Android.

The “phone” was manufactured by Foxconn in China and appears to get its guts from the $87 ABO smartphone, including a full QWERTY keyboard. Straight off the page the phone isn’t ready for much, but with a bit of tweaking Mashable was able to place a phone call courtesy of an embedded T-Mobile SIM card as well as access some basic Android apps.

It certainly isn’t the best device on the market, and it isn’t a complete phone per se, but if you happen to pick up one of the 1,000 copies of EW to carry the new digital ads you can walk away with a new smartphone after a bit of tweaking.

Samsung set to unveil Galaxy S3 Mini on October 11 in Germany?

Posted: 02 Oct 2012 02:14 PM PDT

The Samsung Galaxy S3 first popped up in rumors dating back to August, and it now appears its announcement could be right around the corner. A press event to take place in Germany on October 11th features the familiar ‘S’ logo along with text that can more or less be translated to mean “something small will be really big” and “get ready for a little sensation.” Sure sounds like Sammy is teasing a tiny terror there.

Not much is known about the Galaxy S3 Mini, but as its name implies most expect a device that borrows the look and feel of the flagship model while outfitting it with slightly parsed down specs that could include a 4-inch display at 480×800 resolution and a dual-core processor coupled with a 5MP camera. If things pan out, we should have all questions answered by the 11th.

HTC shows off early One X+ design sketches

Posted: 02 Oct 2012 01:16 PM PDT

The HTC One X+ may look identical to the original One X in nearly every way, but that doesn’t mean the team behind the phone didn’t go back to the drawing board — literally — when creating the updated version of the phone. The design team at HTC took the opportunity to refine what made the One X such a beautiful handset while managing to cram in an larger battery other modified internals. The result is a phone that HTC hopes is as pleasing to the hand as it is to they eye. That’s not even mentioning the powerful new 1.7GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor inside. Motorola drops ITC lawsuit against Apple, no one knows why

Posted: 02 Oct 2012 12:07 PM PDT

Motorola has filed to have its most recent ITC complaint against Apple — one asking for the commission to ban the import and sale of the iPhone and iPad on the basis of patent infringement –withdrawn without much of an explanation. Motorola explicitly states in the latest court documents that no agreement whatsoever has been reached between the two parties, an outcome typically implied by such a move.

The choice to withdraw the complaint likely means Motorola (or parent company Google) did not feel their case was as solid as they did back in August when it was originally filed. There is a slim chance that some sort of settlement is in the works between the Apple and Motorola, but give the Cupertino-based company’s history with patent litigation, we have serious doubts that this is the case.

T-Mobile/MetroPCS merger on the table, Deutsche Telekom finalizing plans

Posted: 02 Oct 2012 10:58 AM PDT

T-Mobile’s parent company Deutsche Telekom has confirmed that talks are in progress to merge their US division with smaller regional carrier MetroPCS in an effort to bolster their position as the number four ranked service provider in the country. While discussions sound as though they are progressing in towards a final deal, DT said, “the conclusion of the transaction is still not certain.”

The German telecom company’s move to spur their US business comes a year after they hoped to exit the market altogether with a proposed $39 billion sale to AT&T. If and when the merger with MetroPCS is finalized, it should give the carrier the resources to challenge Sprint as the number three provider in the US, as well as offer a competitive edge over smaller competing networks such as Leap Wireless.

comScore: Not much has changed, Android still top smartphone platform in the US

Posted: 02 Oct 2012 10:37 AM PDT

Since comScore’s last report on platform market share, not a whole lot has changed. The top two mobile operating systems in the US continue to lead by a wide margin, and have only gained small ground at the expense of RIM, Microsoft, and Symbian. Android continues to hold its top position, claiming stake to over 52.6 percent of all smartphone subscribers. The number is a marginal increase 1.7 percentage points from May.

Apple saw the most growth, but it still amounted to an increase of only 2.4 points to reach 34.4 percent penetration. Surprisingly (or maybe not), the Windows Phone OS that many experts predict to come on as a viable contender over the next couple of years actually saw a decrease in market share, dropping to 3.6 percent. RIM continues its downward trend towards irrelevancy. Check out the full report at the link below.

Sony is continuing their new Xperia ad campaign with a new 60 second spot for the Sony Xperia T. This ad focuses on the device’s superb camera and image sharing abilities. It doesn’t do much to showcase the rest of the device but if photos are your thing then this should be enough to get you plenty excited. The ad won’t hit the airwaves for another few days or so, but you can get a first look using the YouTube video above. [via Sony]

Virtual PBX app for Android launches

Posted: 02 Oct 2012 09:19 AM PDT

Virtual PBX, the folks taking credit for hosted PBX systems, has announced another innovation in their field of choice. A new Android app is being offered for those who would like to manage call routing, extensions, and more from their Android handsets. Users won’t get remote access to all of their systems’ features, but the most useful and popular functions can be controlled and updated via mobile. Here are just a few of those:

  • ACD Queue Presence Management (Exclusive to Virtual PBX) - The Virtual PBX Extension Manager App makes presence management available through the Android smartphone. Users can log in and out of queues and, through the use of intelligent algorithms, Virtual PBX then reduces caller hold times by not forcing calls to extensions where no one will answer. This means happier callers and better efficiency.
  • Do Not Disturb - Users who are in meetings or away from the office sometimes don't want to receive calls at all. In most systems, the phone rings whether the user wants it to or not, forcing the caller to wait for voicemail to pick up and potentially embarrassing the extension owner. Virtual PBX's Android app eliminates this problem by allowing users to mark their extensions as unavailable, so incoming calls go directly to voicemail with no waiting or client interruptions.
  • Follow-me, Find-me - App users accessing this function of their Virtual PBX system can redirect incoming business calls to up to four different phones, such as the VoIP phone in their office, their smartphone or another remote location. They'll also be notified that incoming calls are business calls and can answer appropriately.

The app is free with your Virtual PBX account, and you’ll need your phone number, extension, and the password you currently use to login on Virtual PBX’s website. Find the new app in the Google Play Store here, and read on for full press details.

Virtual PBX Launches Free Android Application with Exclusive Feature
That Enables Mobile Management of Hosted PBX System on Smartphones

New application provides access to all of the most-used functions
of users' phone systems, directly from their Android smartphones

SAN JOSE, CALIF. (October 2, 2012) — Virtual PBX, the pioneer and leader in hosted PBX phone systems, announced today that it has released an extension management application for the Android operating system. The application allows Virtual PBX customers to have access to all of the popular functions of their phone system directly from their Android smartphones, including call routing, follow-me calling and ACD queue logins. The announcement comes just one month after Virtual PBX made the application available for iPhone users.

"With today's workforce becoming more mobile, businesses executives and employees need to be able to access their phone networks remotely," said Paul Hammond, CEO of Virtual PBX. "By providing an Android app in addition to our recently released iPhone app, we're ensuring that our customers can easily access their award-winning Virtual PBX service from practically any smartphone."

The new Android application, along with the iPhone version, allows Virtual PBX customers to remotely manage their office PBX extensions and certain system functions from nearly any smartphone. In addition, the most popular functions can be customized and updated automatically.

The features of the new Virtual PBX Android application, which are also available to iPhone users through the iPhone app, include:

• ACD Queue Presence Management (Exclusive to Virtual PBX)
The Virtual PBX Extension Manager App makes presence management available through the Android smartphone. MEEP! is a $150 Android tablet for kids, and it actually looks pretty cool [VIDEO]

Posted: 02 Oct 2012 08:13 AM PDT

Parents are always looking for new ways to introduce their children to the world of computing, and another viable option has just hit the streets. It’s a tablet that goes by the name “MEEP!” and it’s an Android 4.0 tablet that will retail for just $150.

It’s a 7 inch device that has a camera for still photos and video, HDMI, internal and external storage options, and parental controls for parents to monitor and restrict their children’s usage. Parents can even control these settings remotely using a Parent Portal so they can make changes without needing to take the device from their children.

Other specs include a 1GHz Cortex-A8 processor, 512MB of RAM, and 4GB of internal storage. The Play Store won’t be enabled on the device, but there will be a MEEP! Store where parents can buy games, learning apps, and more for their children.

They can even buy MEEP! Coins for their children. MEEP! Coins is an allowance, of sorts. You can buy them however many coins you want and Children can redeem them in the MEEP! Store just like real cash.

A $5 per month allowance to buy apps and games would be like Christmas every month for some Children, I bet. This is a great way to enable your children to get what they want without the risk of maxing out your credit card.

MEEP! will also be compatible with many accessories, including things like piano keyboards, microphones, drum pads, joy sticks racing wheels, and more. While children’s tablets are nothing new, MEEP! seems like the first one that is going to have some serious support behind it. Read on for full press details, and check out a promo video for the tablet above. Visit Meeptablet.com for more info.

As much as MEEP! was designed for kids, the tablet also appeals to parents with customizable cloud-based settings that parents can control and adjust without having to take the tablet out of their child's hands. By simply visiting the Parents Portal on MEEPTablet.com from any device with a web browser (computer, smart phone, tablet), parents can not only hand-pick ("whitelist") which websites or keywords their kids have or don't have access to, but they can add words to the tablet's built-in "bad word" list so their child will not be able to search for those words or use them in the chat feature. The MEEP! tablet has 4GB of internal storage and a micro SD card slot to install additional memory. Kids can also capture favorite moments – still photos or videos – to share with friends and family via the tablet's built-in, front-facing camera and can display content on the tablet to a television through HDMI.

A full suite of accessories is available for MEEP!, allowing kids to rock 'n roll with a portable piano, drum pad, headphones and microphone or master gaming skills with a joystick, steering wheel or dualplay Game-Pro Case. For added customization, additional silicon bumpers are available in Meepadelic Purple and Meepto Pink.

"We wanted to design a tablet that had all of the features and technology that tablets geared toward adults had without being 'dumbed-down' for 6-12 year olds. The challenge was providing them with content they would enjoy and that parents would feel confident was safe," said Bill Fleckner, Vice President of Sales for Oregon Scientific, Inc. "We achieved that and more with MEEP! and are thrilled at the overwhelming response we've had so far from our retailers and content partners alike."

"Oregon Scientific has a long history in creating innovative consumer technology and we've had tremendous success in the electronic learning products category," said David Riley, Product and Marketing Director for Oregon Scientific, Inc. "We are excited to leverage that experience with a natural extension into the kids tablet category."

MEEP! will be supported by dedicated marketing and public relations campaigns that include national TV advertising, parent and kid-directed online ads, a Radio Disney campaign and promotional support of the Ryan Seacrest Foundation featuring Selena Gomez. The national TV advertising plan includes :15 and :30 spots on the Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Disney XD and The Hub.

The MEEP! tablet is geared for kids 6 and up and is currently available at mass market retailers and online stores for a suggested retail price of $149.99. Accessories are each sold separately. AT&T to officially carry the HTC One X+ and HTC One VX

Posted: 02 Oct 2012 07:18 AM PDT

Hot on the heels of HTC’s official One X+ announcement we’ve already gotten confirmation that at least one carrier will offer the OEM’s latest device, plus more. AT&T has officially announced plans to carry the HTC One X+, and with that will also come the HTC One VX.

The former is nearly identical to the international version, and is a nice refresh over the original One X. While the S4 processor in the One X served us well, we’re teeming with excitement over the 1.7GHz quad-core Tegra 3 chipset found in the One X+.

Other mouth-watering specs include a 4.7 inch HD display, 64GB of internal storage, an 8 megapixel camera, LTE, NFC, and more. The device will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and will have HTC’s Sense 4+ user experience on top.

The One VX is a little less illustrious but still very powerful. It’ll feature a 4.5 inch qHD display, a 5 megapixel camera, a 1.2GHz dual-core S4 processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, NFC, and more.

This one will come with Ice Cream Sandwich instead of Jelly Bean, but rest assured that Jelly Bean will be delivered at some point down the line, and HTC has confirmed that it will, in fact, include Sense 4+.

Unfortunately all we get in the way of a release date is “in the coming months” for both these devices. The One X+ lands overseas this month so it wouldn’t be a bad estimation to say we could see them sometime in November. Read on for full press details.

PS: If you want this thing on any carrier other than AT&T, you’re SoL — this one is exclusive to Ma Bell.

New HTC One™ Devices Coming Soon

AT&T, the exclusive provider of the HTC One X, will add two more exclusive devices from the popular HTC One series – the HTC One X+ and the HTC One VX.

The HTC One X+ will be the first smartphone in the U.S. to feature HTC Sense 4+ and among the first smartphones for AT&T customers to operate on the Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) platform. HTC One X+ combines superior performance, longer battery life and more internalstorage with the iconic design of the original HTC One X, now in an exclusive carbon black finish. It will be the first AT&T smartphone to combine Android 4.1 and a quad-core processor.

A 1.7 GHz Tegra 3 NVIDIA quad-core processor plus a battery-saving fifth core will give customers a unique “4 + 1″ capability to save power using one core for everyday use and kicks into full quad-core mode for demanding apps, like video and gaming.

The HTC One X+ has a 4.7-inch, 720p HD screen and features a predictive-touch keyboard as well as voice recognition. The device also builds on the impressive 8 megapixel rear-facing HD camera of the HTC One X that can quickly auto-focus and zero in on a subject. Perfect for still shots or video, the HTC One X+ integrates the HTC ImageChip which reduces noise, removes color bias and enhances the overall picture quality and 64GB of internal memory is packed into the smartphone to store more high quality photos and video, music, movies and apps.

The HTC One VX is ideal for those looking for an affordable Androidsmartphone and a premium experience. The HTC One VX sports one of the slimmest unibody form factors in the industry at just 9.19 millimeters thin. The 4.5-inch display is laminated with scratch-resistant Corning® Gorilla® Glass which aids in durability and reduces light reflection. A 5-megapixel camera, which goes from lock screen to shooting photos in under a second, offers continuous shooting at 4 frames per second. For those that can’t quite decide whether they want to capture the moment in pictures or video, taking a still from a video with Video Pic™.

Windows Phone 8X by HTC to Arrive in November

The new Windows Phone 8X by HTC will be the first-ever Windows Phone smartphone with built-in Beats Audio™ technology. Imaging, Audio and HTC Sense 4+
The HTC One series set a new standard for imaging with a camera that boasts amazing capabilities with VideoPic, the ability to take still photos and shoot videos at the same time, and one-press Continuous Shooting and better quality images in low light environments.

The HTC One X+ improves on the camera capabilities of its predecessor** with a series of intelligent features powered by HTC Sense 4+. The new Auto Portrait mode on the front camera helps you capture high quality photos by intuitively detecting the human face at various angles. Sightseeing mode makes sure you’ll always be ready to capture the moment, as only one touch of the power button bypasses the lockscreen and launches directly into camera mode. And two new ways to view photos and videos in the gallery allow you to display albums according to when or where they were taken.

Exclusively available on HTC smartphones including the HTC One X+, HTC One X and HTC One VX, Beats AudioTM provides authentic, studio-quality sound that delivers the spirit of the original recording, from crisper vocals and deeper bass to more immersive gaming effects and video. The HTC One X+ also makes it easier to listen to music out loud, and through Sense 4+, introduces a new Tap and Go function, which allows you to connect the phone and your music to Beats speakers’ when you tap them together***. To disconnect, it is just another quick tap on the speaker again.

The HTC One VX will run HTC Sense 4 with Android Ice Cream Sandwich. In the future, the original HTC One X and HTC One VX will be upgraded to HTC Sense 4+ with Android Jelly Bean andwill include the improved camera capabilities and new Tap and Go function found in the HTC One X+.

AT&T customers have access to the nation’s largest 4G network****, covering 275 million people. AT&T has two 4G networks that work together for customers, LTE and HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul. That means AT&T customers are able to enjoy a widespread, ultra-fast and consistent 4G experience on their compatible device as they move in and out of LTE areas. With other carriers, when you travel outside of their LTE coverage area, you may be on a much slower 3G network.

AT&T customers can find the Windows Phone 8X by HTC in AT&T retail stores and online in November. The HTC One X+ and HTC One VX will be available in the coming months. More information about AT&T’s smartphone lineup is available http://www.att.com/wireless.
