DROID Bionic Soak Test Imminent, may finally be Ice Cream Sandwich

Posted: 12 Oct 2012 01:32 PM PDT

In what seems like ages, there’s finally good news for owners of the DROID Bionic. Motorola has purportedly invited Bionic owners to test out a new software update. It’s been reported that we would see Ice Cream Sandwich in the 4th quarter of this year for the Bionic, save for a few leaks. So naturally, we can’t see this being anything other than Ice Cream Sandwich, at long last. As a reminder, a soak test is usually the last phase of testing software. If responses are mostly positive, then it’ll be good to go to the masses soon thereafter. What do you say, Bionic owners? I know, when does Jelly Bean arrive?

LG Nexus could be priced at $399 and be called the Optimus Nexus

Posted: 12 Oct 2012 11:48 AM PDT

Everyone is LG Nexus 4 crazy for obvious reasons. What’s really surprising is that the device could be shipped from the Google Play Store within a next few weeks, October 29 to be exact.

Even though this information relies solely on rumors, ByteNow expects that the price will be around the $399 mark, well-priced for a device that is likely to support the speedy 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, and the crystal clear SLCD display.

There could be one possible flaw that the Nexus might have with certain carriers. The upcoming superphone isn’t expected to carry LTE support, leaving Verizon Wireless in the dust. The recent FCC filing doesn’t mention LTE at all. This means the only U.S. carriers to support the device will be AT&T, T-Mobile, and the smaller MNVO’s. Though that may seem alright with many users, customers of Big Red will miss out on a spectacular device, just like with the predecessors of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Lastly, the name of the device isn’t official, but now the latest rumor suggests it will be called the Optimus Nexus. A name we’ve heard before.

Remember these details are not official yet, and are subject to change anytime. Just make sure to keep checking back with TalkAndroid for the latest and greatest LG Nexus news.

Full review of the LG Nexus 4 appears on online

Posted: 12 Oct 2012 10:57 AM PDT

The same guys that have been leaking images of the LG Nexus just posted a full review. Now they don’t have a finished product as they do call it a “prototype”, but they still offer further insight on the device and make a lot of comparisons to the Galaxy Nexus. The LG Nexus comes in at 9.2mm thick (0.30 thicker than the GNex) and weighs 139 grams. It’s 1.5mm shorter than the Galaxy Nexus, but it’s 1.3mm wider.

There are no contacts for wireless devices. They mention the back being smooth and glossy with the possibility that it’s scratch resistant glass. They couldn’t scratch it with a key.The mosaic image we have seen in the images is there, but it’s underneath this scratch resistant glass. The sides sport a matte black rubberized plastic, and the front has glossy plastic. As far as design, the last item mentioned was the fact that the battery is non removable.

The display is 4.7-inches, is IPS, and it looks amazing. As far as the 8MP camera goes, they didn’t get to much into it, but they did post a good number of pictures taken from the device for you to judge yourself. It does have the quad-code Snapdragon S4 (APQ8064) and 2GB of RAM, but benchmark tests weren’t all that great. They think the reason is the fact that it’s not a finished product.

The prototype they have was only running Android 4.1.2, so nothing could be offered on the supposed Android 4.2 update. Since this is a prototype, there is a lot of bugs so obviously it’s not ready for primetime, which is expected. There’s a lot more information and images in the review so hit the source link to check it out.

Featured Play Store Review: 3 Little Pigs & Big Bad Wolf [Kids - Books & Reference]

Posted: 12 Oct 2012 10:07 AM PDT

Here’s another one for the toddlers from the Kids Academy Company. We recently told you about Montessori ABC Game for Kids, and now we have an interactive book called Three Little Pigs & Big Bad Wolf. It’s the famous short story, but this time it will engage your child with unique interactions on the tablet. My son is almost four years old and we bought a number of books for our ASUS Transformer, but most of them just read the words with limited interactions. I was surprised at how much he got into the book right from the start.

Like most children’s books, the word’s light up as the narrator speaks, but it’s the animations that create the excitement. For example, you can tap the pigs and watch them jump rope or have fun on a tyre swing, but my son was totally engaged when he learned he could tap the straw, wood, or bricks to watch them transform into a house. With a quick tap on the wolf, the animation of him blowing down the house begins. After it gets knocked down, a quick tap will restore the house for another round. When the wolf fails at blowing down the brick house, your child gets a chance to see inside the house before the wolf comes down the chimney. Your child will be able to interact with many objects and control when the wolf slides down the chimney to the hot boiling water, which results in him running away.

Upon opening the app, you have your choice of Autoplay, Listen & Read, or Read to Myself. Autoplay is probably for the youngest kids, while Listen & Read will be the choice for most kids because the words are read out loud, but your child controls when the pages are turned. Read to Myself will obviously be for those kids that already know how to read. When your child want’s to turn the page, he or she will press an arrow to move forward or backward. There isn’t a swiping gesture, which I didn’t like, but not a big deal. The only other minor complaint I had was when my son would press the arrow to move to the next page, there was a slight delay so he felt he needed to hit it again. Again, this is minor.

After only two nights, 3 Little Pigs & Big Bad Wolf has already made it into my son’s top choices for books to read at bedtime so that’s a good sign. It only costs $1.99 and is well worth it when you consider how many times it will be read. Just hit one of the download links below to get started and let me know what you think.

Google Nexus 10 tablet from Samsung expected in first half of 2013 with new display tech

Posted: 12 Oct 2012 09:28 AM PDT

As we reported earlier this week, Google appears to be on track to produce a high-end Google Nexus tablet in the 10-inch class in partnership with Samsung. In a new article on CNET covering some of the new display technology, we are treated to a tidbit of information indicating the new device is expected to hit the market in the first half of 2013. To meet that time frame, Samsung will have to step up their display manufacturing technology.

The new device is expected to come with a 2560×1600 pixel display. On a 10.1 inch tablet screen, the PPI will be knocking on the 300 door. For comparison, Apple’s iPad with its Retina display at 9.7 inches has a 264 PPI and Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD is at 254 PPI on an 8.9 inch screen. If Samsung can produce a new screen as planned, the Google Nexus 10 device will likely jump to the head of the class for tablet displays.

If anyone is capable of producing this next generation screen on a mass production scale, Samsung is an excellent candidate. They are already the only manufacturer of both high-volume advanced AMOLED and LCD screens, although Sharp has announced they will start production of a 443 PPI 5-inch display. A push to up that ante in this fashion would not be a first for Google and its partners. This past year saw Google and ASUS partner to produce the Google Nexus 7 tablet in what many thought was an impossible time frame.

Orange San Diego Starting To Receive Long-Awaited Ice Cream Sandwich Update

Posted: 12 Oct 2012 07:11 AM PDT

Those of you in the UK who went ahead and splurged on the Orange San Diego smartphone may want to listen up to this tidbit of news. It’s no secret that while the Intel-powered smartphone has a fast chip that resulted in a generally stellar performance, the phone was held back because of its software. So after seeing a few teases before, owners of the Orange San Diego can now scream utter joy. Yes– the smartphone was launched with none other than Gingerbread 2.3, which definitely caused more than a few individuals to scratch their heads or sigh disappointment. So Intel has finally made things right and reports are surfacing that the device has finally begun receiving the much-needed Android 4.0 update. Sure it’s not Jelly Bean, but we’re sure owners of the smartphone will be happy. I’m sure they can attest to the fact that anything is better than Gingerbread.

All in all, this looks like the clear signal that the latest Android OS is likely going to be pushed to the device— keeping pace with other developer devices like the Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus. Even though this particular update is not “expected to make large and obvious changes to your Xoom”, any update is always welcome for us Android folk. If you’re a participant of the MFN and own a Xoom Wifi, keep yourself on the lookout for the update which can be pushed out at any time. Oh and when you do see the update, do tell us how if you see any noticeable differences on your device.

For the rest of you U.S. Xoom Wifi owners— if all goes well, expect to see the update being pushed out within the next few weeks.

Cheers John!
