LG’s own 1080p smartphone leaks in benchmark results

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 03:53 PM PST

To be honest we can’t say we’re completely surprised by this leak, but now that the HTC DROID DNA has been announced everyone appears to be “leaking” details about 1080p HD smartphones. Earlier today we heard reports that Samsung has their own in the works, and now a benchmark result has leaked showing an LG F240 device rocking a 1920 x 1080p full HD display.

LG’s just released LG Nexus 4 and Optimus G have been the talk of the town lately. Sporting an impressive 1280 x 768 resolution with some of the highest pixel-per-inch ratios on any smartphone. The same day however HTC shattered their dreams with their 5-inch 1080p HTC DROID DNA. Now just a few days later it appears that everyone has something else in the works, HTC just beat them to the game.

A mysterious device code-named the LG F240 has leaked in a GL Benchmark showing an unknown sized 1920 x 1080p HD display, probably 5-inches, running Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and rocking the popular Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5 GHz quad-core processor. Benchmark results can always be faked, but this looks to be the real deal.

Reports of Samsung’s own 4.99-inch 1080p screen surfaced this morning, Sony stated they’ll be bringing something similar, and now LG. It looks like HTC’s DROID DNA will have some competition very soon — at least from LG. Most likely anything from Samsung won’t be until their Galaxy S4 which we’re expecting to see in Q2 next year after CES. It looks like quad-core processors, 1080p HD displays and more will be the norm coming up at CES 2013 in January. I’m still hoping Samsung rains on everyone’s party with a flexible AMOLED display. Who’s with me?

Google Nexus 10 back in stock – won’t last long

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 02:37 PM PST

For all those unhappy potential customers of the Google Nexus 10 tablet that tried and failed to purchase one back on Tuesday, we have some excellent news. You’ll have to act fast but the 16GB Nexus 10 is back in stock over at the Google Play Store. As expected the tablet is $399 and selling like hot cakes.

Google’s exciting Nexus 10 tablet complete with a brand new 1.7 GHz Samsung 5250 dual-core processor, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, multi-user accounts, and of course an amazing 2560 x 1600 HD display was unleashed into the wild on November 13th, last Tuesday. While it didn’t sell out in 24 minutes like the Nexus 4 did, it didn’t take long for the stock to be depleted.

Basically everything Google announced back on October 29th has essentially sold out in the Google Play Store. Either they weren’t expecting this many buyers, or they’re trying to keep the speed at a medium to slow roll to not overload their relatively new online hardware store. That hardware being Nexus devices full of awesomeness.

In case you’re still on the fence about the Samsung-made Google Nexus 10 tablet, you’ll want to take a quick peek at our Nexus 10 Review. Don’t enjoy all of those pictures for too long because before you know it the tablet will be sold out again. Currently only the 16GB model for $399 is still available, with the 32GB being sold out. Stay tuned as I’m sure it will be appearing back in stock again soon.

HTC DROID DNA should’ve been the Nexus 5

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 02:28 PM PST

Google’s Nexus line is known for pushing the cutting edge and helping the evolution of Android along. Earlier this week Google’s brand new LG Nexus 4 finally went up for sale. While we aren’t here to talk about the lack of stock, or the immediate sold out status, we do want to mention what should’ve been. It should have been the HTC Nexus 5 or the HTC Nexus DNA. With a beautiful 5-inch 1080p HD display and a quad-core processor if any phone deserved the Nexus branding, the HTC DROID DNA was it.

The LG Nexus 4 went up for sale on November 13th, the same day the folks from HTC and Verizon announced their new flagship HTC DROID DNA with all the specs we lust for. Those being big displays, high resolutions, ultra fast processors, and the latest versions of Android. While I wouldn’t go as far as to say the DROID DNA overshadowed the Nexus 4′s debut, it certainly cast a little shadow in our minds.

HTC has pushed the hardware to the absolute cutting edge in more ways than one with their new DROID DNA. So much in fact, it’s hard not to feel like HTC’s DNA should’ve been the next Nexus, not LG’s. We’re certainly not alone in this thinking either. Back when the LG Nexus 4 was still just a leak and a rumor, the unknown HTC “phablet” had the same fate. We even reported multiple leaks regarding an HTC Nexus 5. As I’m sure you’re all aware, the specs are quite stellar and certainly worthy of the Nexus brand. HTC’s DNA comes with a first of its kind 5-inch 1920 x 1080p HD display with 440 pixels-per-inch. a 1.5 GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, an impressive 8 megapixel camera and more. While the battery and internal storage leave something to be desired, Google certainly could and would have stuck with the 16GB of storage HTC’s currently offering. Compare this to the similarly spec’d LG Nexus 4 coming in with a smaller 4.7-inch 720p display, the choice on which is more cutting edge is quite clear.

At this point and time HTC doesn’t quite have the same level of stature as Samsung, being able to offer their Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II unchanged on all major US carriers. While we personally feel that HTC could, they don’t have that luxury at this point. An HTC Nexus DNA would have been their only chance at anything near that level, and certainly helped them out of their current slump. Google would have sold it unlocked in the Play Store and users worldwide would be purchasing it for multiple networks. Instead we have a carrier exclusive (for now) HTC DROID DNA coming from the folks at Verizon Wireless. We’re not sure why this happened, but feel it was a missed opportunity for both HTC, and Google.

Obviously a lot comes into play when working on and developing a “Nexus” device. We know Google pushed the limits with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, wireless charging, a quad-core processor and more but HTC has done the same. There’s a lot that goes into the partnership between the two companies, teams, development, and of course pricing. It’s here that LG most likely had the leg-up on HTC. Being able to reach Google’s extremely tight demand for a premium device at a low $299 price. There’s so many variables between carrier branding, subsidized pricing, 4G LTE, and tons of other reasons that probably got in the way, but price was most likely one of the deciding factors.

In the end we’ll probably never know why HTC wasn’t a part of the Nexus program this time around, and there’s no saying they won’t in the future either. The original Nexus One was by HTC and we’ve been dying to see another ever since. All that aside we’ve been enjoying our limited time with the device that will end up making its way to the shelves, that being the HTC DROID DNA. You can see our hands-on and unboxing for an idea of what to expect. HTC desperately needs a device that will help rocket them back into the minds (and hearts) of consumers just as the Motorola DROID and Samsung Galaxy S has. While the HTC DROID DNA has the best change we’ve seen yet, we still can’t help but wonder what would have been if indeed it was the Nexus 5. What do you guys think?

RadioShack offering $50 Google Play gift card with Galaxy S III purchase

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 12:21 PM PST

It’s that time of the year again folks! The time where everyone starts offering deals, giving discounts, and hope we all line up outside for Black Friday. Today the guys at RadioShack have announced another pretty impressive deal they’ll be offering starting November 18th, available in-store and online with a purchase of the Galaxy S III.

Personally I’m more of a Cyber Monday guy than Black Friday. I’m not about to wait in lines at 4:00 AM in the freezing cold for a TV. Good news though, RadioShack has plenty of Black Friday deals on Android devices, and starting Sunday, November 18th, those who purchase the Galaxy S III will also get a $50 Google Play Store gift card. This is available in-store, and online — but there’s a few catches.

The Galaxy S III from RadioShack will only be $99 too, so that’s another great aspect of this deal. The deal does not apply to T-Mobile, and users are required to sign a new 2-year contract to enjoy that $50 gift card. Other fine print states the deal is only valid in store for AT&T, if you choose to take up this deal online AT&T won’t be taking part — but the other 2 main US carriers will. So get ready to wait in a few small lines at your local shopping mall.

If you’ve been eying the Samsung Galaxy S III, snag one starting Sunday from Radioshack for only $99 and enjoy a $50 Google Play Store gift card to load up on games, apps, books, music, magazines and more. Who’s getting excited for all the holiday deals we’ll surely start seeing soon? I know I am.

AT&T hits 4G LTE deployment plan for 2012 early

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 12:07 PM PST

Verizon may be rolling out its 4G LTE network at an alarming rate, but today AT&T is showing us that it can play ball too. The company announced today that it doubled the size of its 4G LTE network during 2012, and the year isn’t over yet. AT&T will continue rolling out 4G LTE through the end of the year and into 2013, so AT&T customers are only going to see their coverage get better.

In its announcement, AT&T said that it plans to cover 250 million people with its 4G LTE network by the end 2013. By the time the end of 2014 rolls around, that number will be up to 300 million, so the roll out should be mostly complete by then. By comparison, Verizon says that it should be finished with its 4G LTE roll out by the middle of 2013.

So no, AT&T isn’t going to beat Verizon to the punch, but it won’t be too far behind. Both companies launched 4G LTE in new markets earlier this week, with AT&T in particular hitting some big areas. AT&T said today that it now has 4G LTE in 103 markets, but considering how enthusiastic AT&T is about this roll out, don’t expect that number to stay the same for long.

Of course, with AT&T currently ahead of schedule, it’s certainly possible that it’ll reach its goal for 2013 well before 2013 actually ends. We’ll have to wait and see, but it’s definitely an exciting time to be an AT&T customer (depending on where you live, that is). Are you living in one of the areas that recently received AT&T 4G LTE service?

Samsung Galaxy Camera available today from AT&T

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 12:04 PM PST

Don’t call it a smartphone, although the specs sure hint that it could double as one. Today the Samsung Galaxy Camera running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is available online and in stores from those folks over at AT&T. Yup this camera runs Android, has AT&T HSPA+ radios under the hood, and packs a 4.8-inch 720p HD display to enjoy all those photos and videos right on the device.

If you’re interested in this device you probably know plenty about it already. For those that don’t you’ll want to check out our Galaxy Camera announcement post. Not only do we have Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but this rocks a 16.3-megapixel CMOS sensor and an impressive 21x optical zoom. Not to mention having specs nearly the same as the Samsung Galaxy S III.

Those include a 4.8-inch 1280 x 720p HD display, Samsung’s 1.4 GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage for a few quick photos. Then of course the micro-SD slot lets you expand storage and even supports SDXC for even more storage. Obviously being available from AT&T it also supports HSPA+ radios as well as 3G, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS and more. This is essentially a phone with a camera attached, that doesn’t actually make calls.

For a better look at what to expect from the Samsung Galaxy Camera, check out our hands-on and unboxing from yesterday. Obviously data plans are required, or you can opt to use your own AT&T SIM should you already use the carrier. This smart camera is available starting today from AT&T in stores for $499. Stay tuned for our full review of this camera running Android later next week.
