Google I/O 2013 to be held May 15-17 in San Francisco

Posted: 04 Dec 2012 11:24 AM PST

If you’re a Google developer, engineer, or just a superfan, you know that Google I/O is the place to be. Google’s Vic Gundotra has just announced that the 2012 Google I/O conference will take place on May 15-17 in San Francisco, CA, at the Moscone West.

The conference, while held about 6 weeks later in the year in 2012, is a huge to-do for anything Android. Just last year, it saw the unveiling and Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), The Nexus 7, the Nexus Q, movies and tv shows in the Play Store, and much, much more.

Keep in mind that last year, the event completely sold out in less than 30 minutes. While there is not yet any registration info, Gundotra says we should see that information in February.

Android monthly update: Gingerbread still has majority, Jelly Bean climbs up

Posted: 04 Dec 2012 11:11 AM PST

In this month’s update concerning the distribution of OS versions across devices, we’re seeing things move forward… at least a little bit.

Here’s a rundown of the numbers:

Version Codename API Distribution
1.5 Cupcake 3 0.1%
1.6 Donut 4 0.3%
2.1 Eclair 7 2.7%
2.2 Froyo 8 10.3%
2.3 – 2.3.2 Gingerbread 9 0.2%
2.3.3 – 2.3.7 10 50.6%
3.1 Honeycomb 12 0.4%
3.2 13 1.2%
4.0.3 – 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich 15 27.5%
4.1 Jelly Bean 16 5.9%
4.2 17 0.8%

The alarming thing, in this editor’s opinion, is the huge number of devices still running Gingerbread. While it is considered by many to be the most popular – and easily developed for – version of Android, a solid 50.8% of devices is too many to be running an OS version that old. However, it is nice to see ICS and JB take up a combined 34.2% of the share.

Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments.

AT&T finally launching the HTC One VX on Dec. 7?

Posted: 04 Dec 2012 08:16 AM PST

AT&T officially announced the HTC One VX back in October, and then in November, they said that it will hit the shelves on Nov. 16. Well, Nov.16 is history now and the smartphone is still not here, but that doesn’t mean AT&T forgot to launch it. They initially said that One VX will be launched alongside the One X+, however One X+ is here but no sign of the other one.

But may be there’s some light at the end of the tunnel. Our friends over at Android Central are reporting that an AT&T representative told them that  the device “expects to be fully stocked in all channels by Dec. 7.” Fingers crossed.

The day is just three days away, so let’s just wait for AT&T to finally come out and made it official. So if AT&T finally make it official, are you planning to grab one? Tell us about it in the comment box below.

New, easier way to sign up for Facebook Messenger for Android

Posted: 04 Dec 2012 07:49 AM PST

Facebook, wanting to steal you away GTalk, SMS, and other message apps, today announced a new way to sign up for Facebook Messenger for Android. Now, instead of requiring you to log in with your Facebook credentials, you can jump right in with a name and phone number.

This feature will be rolled out to Android users in India, Indonesia, Australia, Venezuela and South Africa with other countries following shortly after.

This move out to help pull in younger users (under 13) who cannot yet create a Facebook account yet have a phone of their own. Hook ‘em young and they’ll turn to a full-on Facebook experience when they’re old enough for an account.  You kids are waiting until you’re 13, right?
