Verizon’s Droid DNA “Hyper Intelligence” ad forgets to mention 5-inch 1080p display

Posted: 06 Dec 2012 11:38 AM PST

I just came across the new commercial for the HTC Droid DNA called “Hyper Intelligence” which teases the big new handset. You know, the one with a 5-inch 1080p HD display – the first of its kind. You’ll have to forgive us for reminding you of the selling feature because Verizon isn’t going to tell you. There’s nary a mention of the screen size or technology. At first glance, this might just confuse consumers who have no idea what one Droid does over the next.

Maybe the next commercial, huh Verizon?

An unbreakable Samsung Galaxy S4?

Posted: 06 Dec 2012 10:38 AM PST

Samsung has, for year, toyed with the idea of flexible and unbreakable display technology but thus far has yet to include in a mainstream handset. If a new Reuters report proves to be legit, the Samsung Galaxy S4 may employ such a display.

“Eventually, they’ll have unbreakable and flexible displays. Either the Galaxy S IV or S V will have unbreakable and even possibly flexible and foldable displays by 2014. That’s going to be a game-changer,” said Mark Newman, an analyst at Stanford Bernstein in Hong Kong.

Yes, but will it blend?

King.com debuts first two Android games, Bubble Witch Saga and Candy Rush Saga

Posted: 06 Dec 2012 08:46 AM PST

King.com, the largest social games maker outside Zynga, has officially thrown their hat in the Android ring.  Today sees them introducing their first two Android games, Bubble Witch Saga and Candy Crush Saga.

Like their Facebook counterparts, these two feature synchronized leaderboards, scores, progress, and virtual goods. Both titles are free to download and play and should hook players quite easily.

We expect each of these to do rather well for Android, considering their mechanics and easy-to-learn-hard-to-put-down design. Both saw tremendous success on Facebook with Bubble Witch Saga cracking the top 10.

Download links and press release after the break

Samsung opens their first “Mobile Store” in Paris

Posted: 06 Dec 2012 07:43 AM PST

That’s right, folks… we still keep up to date with our friends across the lake. Samsung has now opened their first “Samsung Mobile Store” in Paris, France. The idea is new to Samsung, who has had brand stores before, but never one dedicated only to mobile. This means that we won’t just be seeing Android devices, but their Windows devices as well.

The store has everything from specialized consultants to help you with all your Samsung issues, to a children’s area dedicated to indoctrinating your young with Samsung loyalty getting Samsung devices in the hands of youngsters.

If you find yourself in the area of 5 Boulevard Malesherbes in Paris, be sure to stop in and take a look, and let us know what you think in the comments.

HTC showing financial improvement in November

Posted: 06 Dec 2012 07:26 AM PST

No, HTC isn’t exactly going down the tubes, but this last year has been tough for the Taiwanese manufacturer. However, according to the release of their unaudited revenue report for November, the company is showing a positive growth, and at a better rate than before.

The report shows HTC to have brought in $729 million, which is up from $529 million in October. Many are saying that the uptick has to do with the release of devices such as the Droid DNA, the Windows Phone 8X, and the J Butterfly, while others speculate that HTC is paying closer attention to their marketing campaign and pricing.

With the swing of 2013 devices now in view of manufacturers, we’ll have to hold off to see if HTC plans a different strategy next year, in any arena. Keep in mind that, despite the improving numbers, the revenue is still down from both July and August.

Be sure to hit the break for a full presser.

Amazon Appstore downloads up 500 percent over previous year

Posted: 06 Dec 2012 06:52 AM PST

Things are looking pretty good for Android developers considering Amazon’s Appstore for distribution. App downloads are up 500 percent year over year and momentum just keeps building.

A new press release going out today tells us that the Kindle Fire HD has proven to be a catalyst for developers and downloads. The number of GameCircle enabled games, for instance, has more than doubled since the launch of Kindle Fire HD. Total downloads of the In-App Purchasing and GameCircle SDKs has also more than doubled in the same time frame. Speaking of In-App purchasing, Amazon points out that 23 of the top 25 grossing apps for October were using the In-App Purchasing technology.

Amazon has been very friendly to Android developers and seems to be constantly introducing new features.  In addition to the aforementioned APIs and SDKs, Amazon also offers a new Map API, Test Drive, Kindle Fire Emulator, Unity Plugins, Localization Support, and Developer Forums. Today sees them introducing new A/B Testing capabilities to test simultaneous versions of apps
