Video Shows Jelly Bean On Sony Xperia TL

Posted: 24 Dec 2012 03:29 PM PST

A Vietnamese video shows the Sony Xperia TL, currently on Ice Cream Sandwich, running Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2. The video also shows a new lock screen, updated launcher, ClearAudio+ mode and an Xperia V-like Superior Auto mode on the 13MP camera. There may still be updates before the final street version but this should give Xperia TL owners a good idea of what’s to come.

Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX now receiving OTA update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Posted: 24 Dec 2012 01:33 PM PST

Never before have we seen such a glorious Christmas present from Verizon, but it appears as though the original Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX are now receiving an over-the-air update to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. A large number of users are reporting that the update is quite hefty, though we still have yet to hear anything official from Verizon.

It seems the update is rolling out in stages, so if you aren’t prompted right away, it shouldn’t be too much longer. Alternatively, you can manually check for the update by heading into Settings > About Phone > System Updates. Be sure to let us know if you’ve managed to snag the update in the comments below.

Pogo charger for Nexus 10 shows up on eBay

Posted: 24 Dec 2012 12:37 PM PST

The source we cited a couple weeks ago indicating the Nexus 10 Pogo charger would be available within 10 days on Amazon and eBay came close to being accurate. A magnetic charger from MagNector has not turned up on Amazon yet, but it has made an appearance today on eBay for only $19.99. The seller indicates units will ship from Korea starting December 28th for the four foot long power-charging only cable.

CruzerLite teases upcoming Nexus 4 case

Posted: 24 Dec 2012 10:05 AM PST

If you’re not happy with the protection that the official bumper case provides for your all-glass Nexus 4, you may be excited to hear that popular case maker, CruzerLite, is gearing up to release their very own Nexus 4 case. The company leaked this teaser shot of what we can expect, and as you can see it’s definitely a design geared toward the Nexus crowd, with microchip details engraved on the back. It looks as though the case has cut outs for all the buttons as well, meaning you wont have to press your buttons through the rubber, which is always a burdensome process. Everything is looking good so far! We’ll have to wait for more details from CruzerLite for now, but hopefully they’ll be releasing the case soon. Clumsy people everywhere, rejoice!

GT-N5100 shows up in benchmarks again, possibly 7-inch Galaxy Note

Posted: 24 Dec 2012 09:45 AM PST

Remember when those benchmarks showed up a few weeks ago that sparked some rumors about a 7-inch Galaxy Note? We’ve got a little more fuel for the fire. This time it’s a GLBenchmark confirming the GT-N5100, sporting an Exynos 4412 chip and a 1280 x 800 resolution screen. It’s pretty doubtful Samsung would revamp the Note 2 so early with how well it’s selling, so this device is likely going to be tablet sized. It makes sense for Samsung to offer a Note in a 7-inch form factor; the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire are both extremely popular options with a comfortable screen size, and offering the S-Pen on top of that would be a smart move by Samsung. Anyone else hoping it does turn out to be a Note 7?

Archos announces 97 Premium tablet, unquestionably mimics Apple’s iPad

Posted: 23 Dec 2012 10:42 PM PST

French electronics powerhouse, Archos, has long proven that it can consistently build quality Android tablets at affordable prices, but this time around it appears as though the company has gone too far. The manufacturer  announced today a brand new entrant into its luscious tablet offering, effectively bringing its portfolio full circle.

Despite just being announced, the Archos 97 Premium is nothing new. The device’s sole purpose is undoubtedly to compete head-to-head with Apple’s popular iPad. And while competition is a good thing, the 97 Premium is almost a direct copy of Cupertino’s slate, something you could only expect from a Chinese manufacturer selling $50 tablets on eBay.

Interestingly, as the name suggests, the device sports a 9.7-inch display–the same as the iPad. What’s more is that both tablets share the same “Retina” display resolution of 1536×2048. Sure, these things may not be enough to qualify the 97 Premium as a direct copy, but let’s take a look at the all-too-familiar design. Like the iPad, Archos has outfitted the 97 Premium with an unpainted, anodized aluminum backing, as well as curvaceous, protruding metallic edges.

I’m not saying that Apple should be allowed to hold a patent on rounded corners, but it’s time for companies to start becoming more innovative. Archos’ GamePad is a prime example of innovation at its best. It may not be the sleekest or sexiest device on the market, but boy does it function.

In all fairness, Archos has made a few subtle changes to deter Apple lawyers. The front-facing camera has been allocated to the top left-hand corner, while the company has tatted its own name in the center above the display. The corners are also slightly more rounded, though we all know this probably won’t make a difference when Apple inevitably takes it to the courtroom.

Was actual price Google paid for Motorola less than $2 billion?

Posted: 23 Dec 2012 08:06 PM PST

A few days ago Google announced that it was selling the set-top box division of Motorola to ARRIS for a combined stock and cash price of $2.35 billion. This event has triggered a look back at the original purchase of Motorola by Google for a publicized price of $12.5 billion by the folks over at Forbes. According to their analysts, two items of value can be backed out of the original purchase price.

The first is the set-top box division which we now know was worth $2.35 billion. The second are tax savings that Google will realize as a result of Motorola’s losses. Robert Willens, a New York tax expert, has estimated Google will be able to offset the Motorola losses against Google’s own profits to the tune of $1.7 billion initially and $700 million annually through 2019. By Forbes calculations, that brings the price down to $1.5 billion. My own calculations come up with $2.85 billion.

Whatever the final number is, we are closer to being able to assign a value to the patents that Motorola owned, which were the main target of Google’s acquisition.

Role Reversal: Samsung sues Apple in Korea over “Notification Center”

Posted: 23 Dec 2012 03:08 PM PST

Apple has acquired a reputation for being overly-aggressive in taking its competitors to court over patents (as demonstrated by this awesome video called “Apple Kills Star Trek”). In fact, it was just a few months ago that Apple took Samsung to court and won a whopping $1 billion dollars for supposed patent infringements. Well, today it seems the tables have turned for the Cupertino company. In a strange role reversal, Samsung is suing Apple in Korea over IOS 5′s Notification Center. If your not up on Apple lingo, the Notification Center is a blatant rip off of Android’s intuitive notification bar, which pulls down from the top of your screen to reveal your most recent notifications. It is not apparent which specific feature Samsung is suing for, but it’s more than likely something that Samsung has added to the notification bar, since the original code was created and is owned by Google. Since the court case will be in Korea, Samsung will have the home court advantage and may even win back a portion of its hard earned 1 billion dollars. Apple has some good lawyers though, so we’ll see how this pans out. While we wait, feel free to kill some time by watching Apple Kills Star Trek after the break.
