Huawei MediaPad 10 Link tablet spotted with the FCC

Posted: 26 Jan 2013 07:03 AM PST

Huawei was showing off the MediaPad 10 Link tablet during CES, and as of today, it looks like the tablet has taken the next step towards a release. Keep in mind though, Huawei has yet to announce when that release will be happening. And as we already know, the FCC filings will never reveal that bit. Based on the filing, the MediaPad 10 Link looks like it will be arriving as a lower-end version of the MediaPad 10 FHD.

huawei-mediapad-10-fcc-back-540

The specs for the MediaPad 10 Link include a 10.1-inch (1280 x 800) IPS display, 1GB of RAM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS. There should also be a few options for internal storage, possible an 8GB, 16GB and 32GB model. Other details include the tablet as having a Huawei Hass K3V2 Cortex A9 processor and measuring in at 9.9mm thick.

Aside from the specs, there is one point that will likely turn some away — the version of Android. The MediaPad 10 Link will be arriving with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Of course, putting the disappointment of seeing a tablet launch with Ice Cream Sandwich aside, assuming the price is fair (low enough), there may be an appeal for some users.

huawei-mediapad-10-fcc-inside-540

Bottom line here, this looks like it will be another in the Huawei tablet lineup with not all that much to get super excited about. We are still curious about the price and the release date and will have to keep an eye out during Mobile World Congress. In the meantime, those who feel they need to get a bit more, the FCC filing did include the complete user manual.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 makes an FCC appearance as the GT-N5110

Posted: 26 Jan 2013 06:34 AM PST

Following up a series of leaked images, it looks as if the Galaxy Note 8.0 has made the required stop with the FCC. The filing shows a tablet sporting the model number of GT-5110, a number we previously saw associated with the 8-inch Note. The GT-5110 number also matches up with details that we have previously been told. For example, the GT-5110 was expected to arrive as the Wi-Fi only model and this FCC filing does indeed show a lack of cellular connectivity.

galaxy-note-8-0-fcc-label

Based on that it would appear as if we still have another FCC filing to keep an eye out for. This next would be the GT-5100, which is said to be the cellular model. Time will tell just how accurate that plays out to be, however given the other Galaxy Note 8.0 rumors appear to be lining up nicely, we suspect this one will also fall in line. This also seems to be lining up nicely with the expected announcement date, which as we have heard, will happen at Mobile World Congress towards the end of February.

Other details from this FCC filing include the GT-N5110 as being a “personal tablet” that has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity as well as a 1.6GHz processor — all details we have already seen. Additionally, while it is hard to make a direct comparison between the leaked images that we have seen and the FCC diagram — the placement of certain items seem to line up. For example, the camera is on centered (left to right) on the top of the back and the S Pen slot is tucked away on the bottom corner.

While the images and specs all seem to be lining up nicely, we have one interesting question that seems to remain. This question comes from on the images that we have been seeing. Or more specifically, based on the phone app icon. It would be interesting to see if Samsung chooses to release the Galaxy Note 8.0 in a manner similar to that of the Galaxy Note II. In other words, further blending the lines between needing a tablet and a smartphone. So how about it, anyone ready to give up their smartphone in favor of carrying an 8-inch tablet that can make phone calls?

Gameloft teases Blitz Brigade – it’s like Team Fortress 2 for Android

Posted: 25 Jan 2013 04:21 PM PST

Gameloft is teasing a brand new game heading to an Android smartphone or tablet near you soon, and it looks outright amazing. Since the awesome game developers at Valve still haven’t jumped on the mobile bandwagon Gameloft is taking it upon themselves to deliver some quality goods. Blitz Brigade is their new game and it has quite a Team Fortress 2 feeling if you ask us.

Screen Shot 2013-01-25 at 3.54.19 PM

And that isn’t a bad thing. Team Fortress 2 is one of the most exciting and classic shooters on PC if you ask me. This multiplayer team-based first person shooter has all the classic cartoon characters and all, only we’ll be controlling them on our Android devices. It’s a nice mash-up of TF2 and Battlefield Heroes all rolled into one.

Blitz Brigade will be a free-to-play multiplayer game on iOS and Android, and looks pretty epic so far to say the least. You’ll have five character classes to choose from, tons and tons of weapons (probably upgrades you can earn or buy) and will be based on the freemium gaming model. We’ll let you decide for yourself how close this looks to Team Fortress 2.

Gameloft describes their new game as an action-packed game full of team-based FPS-mayhem. You’ll be able to pound your enemies into the dirt and call them mean names. Set in WWII, Blitz Brigade is a team-based shooter featuring different player classes, tons of vehicles, and multiple gameplay modes will be available. Gameloft will also offer single player challenges and more, all using their unique cartoon characters. The single player mode should also be a lot of fun and a nice way to earn additional weapons and level-ups. Gameloft will be revealing more details soon. We can’t wait to play this one. Who’s with us?

Google’s Project Glass Hackathon attendees can’t share the details

Posted: 25 Jan 2013 03:33 PM PST

We have some bad news to report for all those eager readers excited to see more about Google’s awesome Project Glass. A few weeks back we mentioned Google was holding a “Glass Foundry” or hackathon for developers and media to get up close and personal with Project Glass. Now we’re learning we won’t be able to share any of the details with you, our readers.

google-project-glass-Diane-von-Furstenberg-01

We tried to find an awesome Google Glass image (like the one above) to make you all feel better, but the bottom line is Google’s not letting their new toy out into the real world just yet. According to multiple sources the Project Glass developer event will be held to extremely tight NDA agreements. The media and developers attending will not be able to disclose or share anything of the fun things they do and learn while using the augmented reality eyewear.

Basically attendees won’t be able to take tons of pictures and video, and anything exciting or new we learn will not be allowed to be shared to the general public. According to ReadWriteWeb developers will get their own developer Gmail accounts and images will be automatically uploaded to Google+ taken with the glasses, but we aren’t sure if they’ll be public or private.

What it all boils down to is this project is no where near being ready yet. Google’s still working out the details, the wireless radios haven’t cleared the FCC, and they are keeping everything tightly concealed until further notice. The end of the details do confirm developers may get their own set, and are advised not to drive while using Google Glass. They’re instructed to use caution walking the streets and such. Which means they might be out in the wild as soon as next week and possibly we’ll learn more details that way. I’m still throwing my money at Google. I want some now!

HTC Mini announced as a remote for your smartphone

Posted: 25 Jan 2013 02:02 PM PST

Today we’ve learned that HTC is set to offer a new device called the HTC Mini with purchases of their impressive 5-inch HTC Butterfly smartphone. This isn’t a smartwatch that will sync to your smartphone, instead it’s basically a mini phone — for your phone. The HTC Mini is an NFC-equipped remote control and handset that can do all sorts of things, and even make calls.

htc_mini

Yup. HTC has released a mini phone that will act as a phone for those who would rather not remove their real smartphone from a pocket or bag. Confused? Keep reading. The HTC Mini is an NFC-equipped remote control that will sync to the HTC Butterfly (China’s version of the DROID DNA) and essentially become its companion.

Most likely this will also work with the HTC DROID DNA, but for now this is being exclusively offered and sold for China’s variant only. As you can see it basically resembles an old candy-bar style dumb phone. It uses NFC or Bluetooth to sync to the Butterfly and from there gets all sorts of fancy. Check out the video below (not in English) for a better idea of what this thing can do:

In additional to making calls with the dedicated dial pad, it also offers a call log, text messages, calender entries and more all on the small monochrome display. Since we know you’re wondering why anyone would possibly buy this, it does have a few noteworthy features. It doubles as a remote control with the D-Pad shown in the image while using the DNA with HDMI-out or mirror mode, you can use the remote to snap photos when the phone isn’t in reach, and lastly they have a find-my-phone feature. If you lose your smartphone this nifty remote will trigger an alarm to help you find it.

Now I actually sort of want one. No word on official pricing, or if it will ever get released outside of China. We’ll report back when we know more. Thoughts?

Samsung Galaxy Grand with LTE and quad-core CPU announced

Posted: 25 Jan 2013 01:01 PM PST

Samsung first announced the Galaxy Grand back in December. The handset was unveiled in two-versions — a single-SIM and a dual-SIM model. More recently however, Samsung has unveiled a third model. This latest is also dubbed a Galaxy Grand, however it brings an improved processor and speedier connectivity.

galaxy-grand-with-lte

This model will have a quad-core 1.4GHz processor and LTE. For those looking for the comparison, the previous Galaxy Grand was announced with a dual-core 1.2GHz processor and HSPA+ connectivity. Otherwise, the majority of the specs remain the same and include a 5-inch (800 x 480) display, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, 2100 mAh battery, 2 megapixel front-facing camera and 8 megapixel rear-facing camera.

The handset will be running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with the TouchWiz user interface and also have NFC with S Beam support, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. Another feature will give a clue as to where this LTE capable Galaxy Grand is headed — T-DMB, mobile television for those in South Korea.

Samsung has yet to offer anything that suggests this model will be heading anywhere except South Korea. All said and done, aside from the limited amount of internal storage and 800 x 480 display, this model does not seem all that bad of a handset. Of course, that may just be in comparison to the specs of the previously announced Galaxy Grand.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 LTE headed to US Cellular

Posted: 25 Jan 2013 12:27 PM PST

The folks at US Cellular are getting prepared to offer another tablet to their customers. This time it will be the recently updated to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet. The WiFi model has been available for some time, and Verizon announced their own 4G LTE version earlier this month. Now it looks like US Cellular will be getting in on the fun.

galaxynote10-1_3_view

The Galaxy Note 10.1 has been stuck on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but the model headed to Verizon with 4G LTE has the latest update with all the multi-view window modes and advanced multitasking features already included. While the device page at US Cellular states Ice Cream Sandwich, and no 4G LTE, when the tablet gets announced it should feature both Jelly Bean and 4G LTE.

US Cellular usually follows along in Verizon’s footsteps with all the popular Samsung devices like the Galaxy S III, Note II and others, so we’re expecting a very similar device to hit US Cellular’s shelves. For an idea what to expect check out our Verizon Note 10.1 LTE hands-on from CES earlier this month.

All the specs should remain the same here. Those being a 10.1-inch HD display, Samsung Exynos quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM, front and rear cameras and of course that S-Pen stylus for all those content creation apps Samsung bundles with their Note devices. US Cellular hasn’t announced the LTE model yet, but we’re hearing an announcement and release date should be arriving soon. Stay tuned and we’ll update when we know more.

Hyundai T7 tablet beats Galaxy Note 8.0 to shelves for $166

Posted: 25 Jan 2013 11:49 AM PST

There’s been a lot of talk and leaks lately about Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet. While we don’t know all the details yet, a rather interesting device from none other than Hyundai has arrived and looks almost identical to the Note 8. Meet the Hyundai T7 tablet complete with a 7-inch HD display, priced lower than the Nexus 7, and the same quad-core processor as the Galaxy S III. Oh and did we mention it looks like a super-sized smartphone.

t7_01

And you thought Hyundai only made cars. Now we’re not sure what to make of this tablet. It looks basically exactly the same as the Galaxy S III only blown up to fit a 7-inch display. That isn’t where the similarities end however. The same powerhouse 1.4 GHz quad-core processor as the GSIII is also powering this device. Pair that with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and a 7-inch 1280 x 800 IPS HD display for $166 — and we’re interested.

At first we would have laughed when seeing this (and still are, look at the camera on back) but now that we’ve seen Galaxy Note 8.0 leaks looking nearly identical we’re not so sure. Are the recent Galaxy Note 8.0 leaks real? There’s a pretty good chance they are fake, but we won’t know until Samsung announces it themselves. For now lets talk more about this Hyundai tablet.

lolwhy

The 1.4 GHz Samsung Exynos 4412 quad-core processor is paired with 1GB of RAM and Mali 400 graphics, you’ll enjoy 8GB of internal storage, a 2 megapixel rear and VGA front set of cameras. There’s a micro-SD for adding storage and we have WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, Sensors, and even HDMI-out for streaming video. All of this comes with a measly 3,000 mAh battery but they promise 4 hours of solid use. We’re really not sure what to make of this tablet given it’s a complete Galaxy S III ripoff, nor why Samsung would provide their chipset for the device.

Pretty interesting little tablet either way. The only things I’m worried about is Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and that small battery. This thing can be yours today for just $166 according to online retailers. I’d proceed with caution though.

Alcatel One Touch Evo 7 tablet stops by for a visit with the FCC

Posted: 25 Jan 2013 11:47 AM PST

Alcatel unveiled the One Touch Evo 7, along with the Evo 7 HD during CES and it looks like the former has made an appearance with the FCC. This filing does give the appearance that a release date is coming, however so far — Alcatel has yet to offer anything specific. That being said, we had been told the specs for the One Touch Evo 7 during the CES unveiling and this filing does not offer any surprises.

alcatel-one-touch-evo-7-fcc-back

Simply put, we are still looking at a tablet with a 7-inch (1024 x 600) display, single-core 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot and a VGA quality front-facing camera. The tablet will be running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1 and an option to add on HSPA +21 connectivity.

Similar to the lack of a specific release date, Alcatel has yet to offer anything in terms of pricing. Just to give a rough idea though, the higher-spec’d One Touch Evo 7 HD is expected to arrive priced at $179. Simply put, we are likely looking at something under $150 when it comes to the Evo 7. Additionally, the Evo 7 HD is expected to arrive for sale beginning in May.

alcatel-one-touch-evo-7-fcc-front

Those itching to get their hands on a 7-inch Ice Cream Sandwich tablet who happen to feel like they cannot wait any longer — maybe a browse through the FCC filing will do something to help ease that itch. The filing is full of information including everything from exterior and interior photos, to test setup photos, label information, the letters and even the complete user manual
