Polaroid opening stores exclusively for printing photos from your phone

Posted: 02 Jan 2013 09:26 AM PST

In trying to keep up with the hip, club-going, photo-snapping crowd of 20-somethings (and 50-somethings in a crisis), Polaroid – yes, that Polaroid – is looking to build up some brick and mortar stores. These new set-ups are going to be made for one thing only – printing photos from your phone.

the locations are based on Polaroid’s Fotobar service, and lets users upload, enhance, and print shots from their Fotobar capable devices. The strange thing here is that it’s oh-so-simple already to print your photos from your device at any convenience store, so the company is going to try to play off of the fact that they’ll have “Phototenders”, basically concierges that will walk you through the process.

LG to release new Smart TVs with NFC and Miracast

Posted: 02 Jan 2013 09:11 AM PST

LG has unveiled some new information about their new Smart TVs ahead of CES next week, and some of the things we’re seeing are pretty cool. While these new TVs aren’t the ones we’ll be seeing in Vegas, they’re still worth talking about.

The new LG cinema 3D range includes an edge-to-edge display, NFC, and Miracast. While most know what NFC is (Near Field Communication), Miracast is a slightly lesser known feature. Miracast is a peer-to-peer wireless screencast standard made by the wi-fi alliance, and is a technology that allows users to wirelessly mirror their device’s display on another, such as the LG TV.

We’ll have to wait until CES to see if any more manufacturers pick up on adding the new technology to their devices.

An 11th hour rumor hitting the internet today suggests that we’ll be seeing the rumored HTC M7 announced at CES after all. Well, that is provided an ‘indirect’ source close to XDA forum member @Football4PDA. It isn’t clear whether this would be as part of a carrier unveiling or if HTC  would issue a press announcement and put the device on display.

We’re not totally sold on this one so we’ll be adding a pinch of salt to our list of things to pack for CES next week.

LG to demo 4.7-inch, 5.5-inch, and 7-inch displays at CES, source indicates

LG will demonstrate at least three new displays sizes at CES, according to sources close to GSMArena. On hand next week at the annual electronics convention will be a 4.7-inch smartphone display that features a 1mm bezel as well as a 5.5-inch 1080p HD display. In addition to these two, LG will also show off a 7-inch 1920×1200 display which could ultimately find a home in Android tablets.

We’ve seen LG show off some of its technologies in the past, even in unofficial, prototype capacity. Assuming none of these are included in a specific model at CES, we could see them a few weeks later at Mobile World Congress. LG was quite busy at last year’s MWC show so we anticipate something similar for 2013.

Is it time to start tracking yet another Samsung smartphone? The answer depends on how much credence you put into benchmarks and whether you use them as a source for unearthing new models. Either way, a Samsung GT-I9600 has been spotted online at NenaMark, possibly outing a new model.

With specs that closely resemble the Galaxy S III, the I9600 looks to feature a 1280×720 pixel display, quad-core 1.4GHz processor, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Could a variant be in the works or has someone done a bit of trickery?

The press images for a pair of upcoming Sony smartphones have leaked online thanks to the team at Engadget Spanish (translate). The headlines says it all here, these are allegedly the first press photos for the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL.

Also known as the Yuga and Odin, these are the two devices that have been getting plenty of circulation in the rumor mill over the last few months. The two are nearly identical under the hood and are said to include a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor and Adreno 320 graphics. Additional details reportedly include a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, micro HDMI, microUSB, and a 2,330 mAh battery.

The Xperia Z is the larger of the two devices and will feature the 5-inch 1080p HD display that is becoming common in the Android space. We’re expecting to see both of these on display at CES and would be very surprised if they were not part of their big 2013 unveiling.
