The free-to-attend Android developer event at Apps World North America on February 7-8 in San Francisco is all set to feature various leading Android developers, authors, evangelists and operators divulging their expertise on all things Android.

Sponsored by Barnes & Noble, the Android developer conference runs on both days of Apps World and will be of interest to anyone building apps on the Android OS.

The OS market has long since been considered a two horse race, but plenty of evidence suggests Android is pulling ahead, with recent research from MBA Online confirming that 1.3m Android devices are activated each day compared to 515,000 iDevices.

AT&T posts Q4 earnings, big profit backed by strong wireless growth

AT&T’s posted their Q4 earnings, and they had a pretty impressive year. They posted a 3.9 billion dollar loss for Q4, but a 7.3 billion dollar profit for the fiscal year. Worthwhile tradeoff? I doubt you’ll hear AT&T complaining too much either way. They also activated 10.2 million smartphones last quarter, a number they’re claiming is “record setting.” AT&T’s biggest competitor, Verizon, only did 9.8 million smartphones, so that gives the claim quite a bit of credibility. Those 10.2 million smartphones accounted for 89% of AT&T’s total postpaid sales, as well. They’ve also added 1.1 million new customers, 780,000 of which were postpaid users. Overall, there’s room for improvement, but it wasn’t a bad year for AT&T by any stretch.

Pink DROID RAZR M makes an appearance in Verizon commercial

The DROID RAZR M is one really nice phone for the money. At $49 it’s has some really nice specs including that edge to edge display. A pink version is already available in stores to celebrate Valentine’s Day so if you’re looking for a gift for that special someone, this might be a good option. Of course they really have to like the color pink because they are going to look at it for the next two years. Anyways, Verizon put out a commercial featuring it, so check it out after the break.

HTC announces the Desire U for Taiwan

HTC just pulled the covers off of another economy device. It features a 4-inch (800 x 480) display, 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB storage, microSD slot, 5MP rear camera, Beats Audio, and 1,650mAh battery. These specs obviously put this on the lower end of the spectrum, but it does feature an interesting circular design on the back so it might not look as cheap as it performs. It’s already available now in Taiwan for NT $7,900 or $275.

MeCam Nanocopter Will Follow You Around Documenting Your Awesomeness

The MeCam nanocopter, being developed by Always Innovating, looks to be your personal hovering paparazzi. The voice-controlled hovering video camera can even be set to “follow” mode while it runs video and streams to your Android device (or iOS). The captured video or  panorama shots can be shared through Google+, YouTube, Facebook or other social media sites.

The MeCam is technically still in development so we’re still missing a few key details such as battery life and information about the image quality. The estimated retail price will be a very reasonable $49. It will have a Cortex A9 processor (1 to 1.5GHZ), 1GB of RAM, Wi-Fi & Bluetooth connectivity and it will have an SD card slot for storage. Always Innovating has set 1st quarter of 2014 as a possible launch date but the design company has yet to come to an agreement with a manufacturer.

Samsung rakes in huge on Q4 2012 earnings report

The start of the year means financial reports for many companies. Sometimes we’re a little surprised, sometimes things are about where they should be, and in Samsung’s case, they blew expectations out of the water. Samsung even outdid their own estimates. That’s how successful it was. The early reports had Samsung pulling in about 8 billion in profit for Q4, so everyone had pretty high expectations for the tech giant to begin with. At the end of the year, Samsung managed to bring in about 27.2 billion dollars in profit, and they did about 188.15 billion dollars in total revenue. Needless to say, a huge chunk of that came from Samsung’s smartphone division, with the record-breaking sales of the Galaxy S III pushing that. It’s safe to say that Samsung had a pretty successful year in 2012, and they’ll continue to keep that momentum in 2013. Skype updated with portrait calling support on tablets, new languages

Skype for Android has been given a breathe of life today as a new update has officially brought portrait calling to tablet users. The majority of the application still doesn’t support portrait mode, though this is unquestionably a step in the right direction. Previously, users with top-mounted front facing cameras would be forced to use the tablet in landscape, inevitably creating a strange camera angle. Also included in the update is a slew of much-needed bug fixes, as well as a swath of languages including Norwegian, Portuguese and UK English. Samsung’s Exynos 5 Octa poses for its close-up

Samsung has taken to Twitter to show off its all-new eight core Exynos 5 Octa chipset. Other than the spectacular grid of spheres on the rear, there’s nothing really to see here. Although, if rumors hold true, we can expect to see the Korean manufacturer’s new Exynos 5 make its debut inside the Galaxy S IV later this year. For now, we’ll just stare and salivate.

Intel to release the oddly named Yolo for Kenyan markets

Intel is preparing to launch Africa’s first Android device powered by an Intel chip, to be called the Intel Yolo. It will run on their latest Lexington platform, and boasts a 1.2 GHz Atom processor, complete with Intel’s signature hyper-threading technology. Aside from that, you’ll be getting a 3.5-inch screen, 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of internal storage, Android 4.0.4, and the increasingly rare micro-SD card slot. It’s not impressive even by last year’s standards, but it’s priced at $125, so it isn’t really aimed at competing with an HTC M7 or Galaxy S IV. It’ll make a splash in Kenya first, but inevitably end up in a few other markets as time goes on. Anybody planning on picking up a phone called the Yolo?

OUYA presents improvements to game controller based on dev feedback

Last month OUYA start shipping their forthcoming gaming console to developers so they could start to get a feel for what needed to be improved. OUYA says they received a ton of comments and feedback on what would make the game controller even better. OUYA has taken the comments to heart and announced today several changes and improvements to the gaming console for the newest iteration.

Some of the new features or changes include:

  • D-pad: The D-pad has been changed from a flat disc type pad to a “cross” type pad. OUYA and those who commented on the disc pad think the cross will improve accuracy and precision.
  • Thumbsticks: A layer of rubber has been added to the top of the thumbsticks to improve grip and in the process it sounds like a heftier feel to the sticks.
  • Touchpad: Apparently many comments were received about the lack of responsiveness. OUYA’s developers promise the material used for final production will address this concern.
  • Triggers: A weak spot in the first design, OUYA says they have redesigned the triggers and how they work, including making them more flush with the unit.
  • Battery bay: Things have been snugged up a bit in the battery bay to help keep the juice in place. OUYA also says better material will be used for production of the pull tab.

OUYA promises they will keep listening to feedback from developers and other testers.
