Hands on with the Alcatel One Touch Tab 7 HD, Tab 8 HD, and EVO 7 HD Tablets

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 03:10 PM PST

Alcatel announced an update to its line of tablets yesterday, effectively bringing fresh hardware across the spectrum. The Tab7HD features a 7-inch WXGA 1280 x 800 IPS display powered by a 1.6GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM. The larger Tab8HD sports the same specs as the smaller Tab7HD, although with a larger 8-inch display.

The One Touch Evo 7 HD utilizes the same internals as the other devices, though it comes with the option to purchase an additional mobile data module which Alcatel is claiming to be the first of its kind. With the additional HSPA+ module, the device is slated to be available for $249 at launch. There will also be a 4G LTE version in the future for $349.

.Hands On With The Alcatel T’Pop, S’Pop, M’Pop And X’Pop Smartphones .

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 02:50 PM PST

Alcatel One Touch has certainly made a splash here at CES by introducing a host of awesome smartphones. Our own Rob Nazarian got some hands-on time with the T’Pop, S’Pop, M’Pop and X’Pop smartphones. As you can see, all 4 come in a variety of shapes and features– with the T’Pop, S’Pop, M’Pop and X’Pop models each featuring a single-core processor, but the M’Pop & X’Pop models both feature bigger screens and Jelly Bean running the show. The fairly exciting thing about this is the fact that each model seems to feature a lightly customized build of Android, so at least there’s no extra junk to slow the devices down much. All in all– the devices seem like a good bet to make a pretty good impression for those in the market for a budget-level device.

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 02:49 PM PST

Along with its new line of Evo tablets, Alcatel is dipping its toes into the higher-end Android smartphone market with the introduction of its Idol and Idol Ultra handsets.

The company is touting its One Touch Idol Ultra as the thinnest smartphone currently on the market, measuring in at just 6.45mm thick. It also sports a 4.7-inch OLED HD display and an 8-megapixel camera. The One Touch Idol is aimed more towards the lower-end market, featuring a 4.7-inch qHD panel and an 8-megapixel camera. Both devices run atop Mediatek’s 1.2GHz dual-core 6577 processor and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Hands on with the Polaroid Kids tablet [Video]

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 12:34 PM PST

A few days ago we reported on Polaroid’s foray into the tablet market with a device designed specifically for kids. With a large bezel and kid friendly buttons, the 7-inch screen is backed with a 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM capable of running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Polaroid even took the step of removing access to the Google Play Store so kids won’t get themselves into trouble.

Polaroid had the device on hand at CES 2013, so we were able to gets some hands on time with the Polaroid Kids tablet as seen in the video after the break.

Hands On With The Lenovo IdeaCentre Horizon Tablet [Video]

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 11:46 AM PST

While some of us may feel a little iffy about Windows Surface Tablets out there, Lenovo is out to change that perception by introducing the IdeaCentre Horizon tablet. While the massive 27-inch display, “Aura” custom UI and the ability to play air hockey are each nothing to sneeze at— the real noteworthy aspect of the device is the fact it can operate Android apps, thanks to the Bluestacks Android player which comes preloaded. And before you ask— yes— the apps work like a charm and operate as if you’re on a traditional Android device.

If you’re in the market for a Windows-based tablet, but want something that’s Android-friendly— the IdeaCentre Horizon may be a compelling option. Hit the break to check out the hands-on video in all its glory.

Leaked Image Of Possible HTC M7 And Sense 5.0 Screenshots

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 09:52 AM PST

More leaked images for HTC’s Sense 5.0 hit the interwebs. We saw images of the leaked dialer a few days ago and what we’re seeing today looks just as nice. As with the dialer, these images are purportedly from the HTC M7.

Possible photo of the M7 and a screenshot of the settings past the break

I’ve never been a big Sense supporter but I definitely like the new cleaner look. I can’t, however, say I’m too convinced by the supposed picture of the M7. Like Mulder, I want to believe but even this picture is more convincing. Either way, this may be the first phone since HTC’s CEO promised to wow us with unique products.

ViewSonic 24-inch Smart Display tablet shows up at CES

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 09:51 AM PST

Throughout our CES 2013 coverage, we have seen manufacturers continue the trend of pushing screen sizes larger and larger for smartphone devices and blurring the line between phone and tablet, like the 6.1-inch Huawei Ascend Mate. These devices have nothing on ViewSonic though. How about a 24-inch Smart Display tablet? No, you won’t be pulling this out of your pocket or even your laptop case. However, if you have the need for a flat surface that functions like an Android tablet, but on a much larger scale, a ViewSonic Smart Display may be just the ticket.

The newest member of the family is the VSD240 with a 24-inch, 1920 x 1080 HD LED screen. The tablet runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and is powered by a 1.7GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor. The VSD240, like its 22-inch sibling the VSD220, includes HDMI and USB ports, SD card slots, and a 1.3MP camera. Using the variety of ports, Bluetooth and WiFi capabilities, the device can double as a display for a traditional PC.

You might think a device like this might cost an arm and a leg, but ViewSonic has indicated it will be available in April for only $499.

Be sure to check back here at TalkAndroid as we continue our CES 2013 coverage.

Estimated 103 million LTE-enabled devices shipped in 2012, numbers to surge within the next few years

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 09:35 AM PST

Everyone knows 4G LTE is becoming the new standard technology, replacing older 3G networks. According to ABI Research, adoption of 4G in 2012 wasn’t quite as fast as 3G adoption was a few years ago, which is surprising considering all the incredible devices we’ve seen launch in the past year. They estimate about 91 million LTE handsets to be in circulation, with 95% of that coming from North America and Asian markets. That percentage isn’t surprising, since North America is miles ahead of most other markets with LTE coverage. That 91 million, however, is expected to skyrocket within the next few years, with predictions of  785 million LTE subscribers by 2017. That seems like a lot, but when something is the standard for technology like LTE will be, high adoption rates are normal. You don’t see very many people bragging about their new 2G phones anymore, after all.
