CyanogenMod adds HDR camera functionality for (almost) every device

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 04:34 PM PST

Android Central

The CyanogenMod team has just added HDR (High Dynamic Range) camera functionality for almost all devices running CM10.1 builds. The HDR mode has been enabled on most devices, and captures and processes images similarly to the way the Nexus 4 does with its stock software. The camera takes three images -- one under exposed, neutral exposed and over exposed -- and processes them together to make an image that usually "pops" a bit more. The functionality will be baked in and ready to use for anyone that has the stock CM camera app installed.

There are a few caveats, however. Because CyanogenMod supports so many devices with varying levels of cameras (sizes, qualities, processors), the process may not work as well on certain devices. The team recommends that users use a tripod or some sort of stabilization -- good rules for any photographer -- for the best results. If you have a newer device with a "zero shutter lag" camera, you should see pretty good results.

This week's sidebar poll: Which U.S. carrier will you be getting the HTC One on?

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 01:18 PM PST

HTC One

HTC is billing the HTC One as the best smartphone available today. CEO Peter Chou said as much, and it's evident he believes it. We can't argue with anyone who agrees. It's packing an all-new next generation chip with the Snapdragon 600, has what looks to be an excellent camera, and amazing screen, and a sexy all aluminum chassis. The software side looks plenty innovative as well, and I can't wait to try out the Zoe features. In short, we know plenty of you guys and gals will be picking this one up.

Since the majority of our readers (hey, that's you!) hail from the United States, this week's sidebar poll is about US availability. Verizon was notably absent from the race to tell us all that we can buy an HTC One soon from our carrier's stores. We're not reading a lot into that by the way -- Verizon will be Verizon and do their own thing in their own time and the HTC One may show up there, Droid name in tow. Or it may not, and they end up with something completely different. Wait for an announcement before you blow a gasket.

Having sad that, we want to know who you plan on buying your HTC One from if you're going to buy one. When we have questions that only you folks can answer, we run a poll. Find it in the sidebar to the right, or just click past the break.

DashClock Widget

Hang with us after the break and see a few of the best DashClock Widget extensions that we're using.

Stock Talk: Google hits $800 a share, for what that's worth

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 11:50 AM PST

Google

Today Google’s stock price crossed above $800, sparking a bunch of headlines as to the supposed significance of the event.  But it needs to be kept in perspective.

Google went public back in 2004 for $85 per share.  When the initial public offering (IPO) happened, the stock rallied immediately and closed just over $100. It has had its ups and downs over the years, but people who bought at the IPO have made almost 10x their money in under 10 years. Not too shabby.

Just think.  In 2004 there was no Android and there was no YouTube. And so today not only is Google still the world leader in search, but they’re also the world leader in user generated video sharing and mobile operating systems. Oh, and Google still slaughters everyone else in search.

Naturally, we got some hands-on time with HTC's new shiny after the presentation, so check the video above for another perspective on the handset. You'll find five minutes of footage covering the design, BlinkFeed, the Ultrapixel camera, HTC Zoe and more.

HTC One available to pre-order in the UK SIM free

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 09:52 AM PST

Android Central

All eyes have been on HTC today and what a beauty the HTC One looks to be. Here in the UK, Clove has already opened pre-orders for the device which they are expecting in stock on March 15th. The HTC One will set you back £425+VAT SIM-free and will be available in Silver or Black colors with 32 GB of internal memory.

That may sound a lot of money, but as more and more of us seem to go down the SIM-only route instead of a 24 month contract, the maths work themselves out.

Head on over to Clove to get your orders in. I suspect the HTC One could be slightly popular! If you missed our earlier hands on with the device you can catch up here.

Discuss the HTC One

Unless you're living under a rock you've probably been all over the HTC One announcement from earlier today. Phil, Anndrew and Alex were busy live blogging the events in NYC and London earlier… and they've even put together an HTC One hands-on, and HTC One Guide. It's all solid stuff.

With all that goodness to digest, chances are you'll want to hop into the forums to discuss the new device, the camera, HTC Sense 5 (I could go on and on).

Pop over to the HTC One Forum and get your discussion on. Do it. Now! :)

HTC One's designer talks about balancing engineering and emotional priorities

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 09:46 AM PST

Android Central

HTC posted a great blog entry about their thinking behind the construction and design of their shiny new HTC One. Designer Thomas Chien gushed openly about how good the One feels in the hand, but also touched on how tricky it was on the engineering side. Obviously an all-metal body (a first in the smartphone world) could cause some pretty hefty reception issues, but without going into too much technical detail, Chien sounded confident that they had created a phone that feels and functions great. Their tagline here is that "feeling is more important than physics", and certainly sets the scene for how the design and engineering teams work together at HTC.

What do you guys think of the overall look of the HTC One? How much will you need to actually hold one before making the decision to buy it?

First look at the HTC One cases, charger and dock

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 09:27 AM PST

HTC One flip case

To compliment its stunning One smartphone, HTC introduced a handful of accessories this morning, including a variety of cases tailored specifically by the company for the device. HTC seems to have caught onto the fact that hardware only tells half the story for consumers, and phones with a rich accessory ecosystem are almost always more appealing to the average customer.

HTC has played around with these cases and each has a unique draw: the kickstand case harkens back to the EVO era, while the flip case is reminiscent of one of the cornerstones of Samsung's sales strategy. There's also a three-piece case which will come in a variety of color combinations for maximum personalization.

In addition to cases, there's also a handy mobile charging system (a bite-sized box to carry in your pocket for a quick re-up) and a dock. Unfortunately, these items were behind lock and key this morning, so we cannot report on the charger's capacity or if the dock's specifications.

No word on availability or pricing of these accessories just yet, though we're willing to bet they'll be ready in time for the One's launch late next month. Hit the break for the full accessories gallery.

HTC One hands-on

HTC One.

It's been quite a morning here in New York, and after weeks of leaks, anticipation and rumors, the HTC One is officially official. In case you're waking up late, we're talking about a design overhaul here, complete with metal chassis, 4.7-inch 1080p display, and Sense 5.0. The highlights here aren't so much the specs-- though the Snapdragon 600 chip and 2GB of RAM are nothing to sneeze at-- as they are the features HTC has built from the ground up, including the Ultrapixel camera complete with "Zoe", Sense 5's new BlinkFeed homescreen experience, and BoomSound. Hit the break for our initial impressions.

HTC offers $100 trade-in for HTC One purchases

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 08:41 AM PST

HTC trade in

HTC seems very excited (and rightfully so) about the new HTC One, and they want to make it a little easier for you to put their latest in your pocket. They’ve announced a new HTC One cash-back program, where they’ll give you $100 when you trade in your old phone for the new HTC One. It's pretty simple:

There's a lot to like about the HTC One. It has incredible specs, offers a brand new take on HTC's flavor of Android with the new HTC Sense, BlinkFeed and Zoe, and it's premium design and materials can't be ignored. Giving us $100 on top of it all is a great way to get our attention.

Canonical delivers Ubuntu Touch for tablets

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 08:04 AM PST

Ubuntu tablet

The countdown timer on the Ubuntu website has ended, and Canonical has made Ubuntu for tablets official. With the tablet version, Ubuntu now scales across just about every screen and device you could imagine, from your smartphone all the way up to your television -- each with their own unique UI additions to make for a simple, yet elegant solution for your computing needs.

Android Central at Mobile World Congress

The new tablet design is built on the very same Ubuntu core as the rest of the product line, with an emphasis on productivity and security. The new side stage multi-tasking allows for phone and tablet apps on the screen at the same time, and full encryption and secure multi-user logins are an integral part of the operating system. When added to Ubuntu's unique heads-up display, voice activated control and gesture based navigation, Ubuntu on your tablet might be the cleanest design you've ever seen.

Ubuntu on a tablet is something many of us have been wanting. With today's hardware, a full Linux distribution on a 7 or 10 inch screen is more than feasible, and it looks like we're going to get a chance to find out. On Feb 21 when Canonical releases the Ubuntu Touch preview, the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 will be supported in addition to phones like the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4. Hit the break for the full press release, a product video, and the press photos.

HTC One: Your guide to the 2013 Android reboot

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 07:30 AM PST

HTC One

Next-generation hardware meets bold software changes as HTC forges ahead after a tumultuous 2012

Take a seat, folks. This is going to take a little explaining. HTC today at simultaneous events in London and New York once again rebooted itself. Yes, it did so a year ago at Mobile World Congress with the launch of the HTC One line. Only what was to be a singular brand built with low-, mid-range and high-end phones (the HTC One V, One S and One X) was diluted into any number of variants in any number of markets. It was business as usual, and HTC paid the price for it financially in a 2012 that saw Samsung bring more chips to the table than anyone while playing the same winning hands over and over with the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2.

Also: HTC One specs; hands-on with the HTC One

Something had to change. Of that there should be no disagreement. And so today we have the HTC One, which until today has been going by its nom de plume, M7. HTC has taken its 2012 sigil -- which never really worked as an overarching brand name for multiple devices -- and recast it, literally and figuratively, in a single body. One phone. One vision. And, as we said at the outset, a good bit of explaining is required.

On one hand, HTC is continuing down the trail it's walked (or blazed, company execs will remind you) for years. Custom software. Powerful hardware. And in a more recent discovery for HTC, quality audio and optics. All of these things continue with the HTC One. But they're going to require letting go some of the old ways of thinking about smartphones in general, and with the Android experience in particular. You'll know your way around the HTC One just fine, but there's also a lot more to explore.

What follows is a preview of things to come. We've got the usual initial hands-on posts and, later, our full review. But consider this your guide. A roadmap to what's new, what excites us -- and what concerns us -- in the HTC One.

NVIDIA announces Tegra 4i with integrated LTE modem

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 06:00 AM PST

NVIDIA Tegra 4

Smaller than Tegra 4 but still boasting some serious processing power

NVIDIA this morning took the wraps off the Tegra 4i, the next iteration in its recently announced Tegra 4 family. In a nutshell, Tegra 4i is smaller package than its Tegra 4 cousin. It's got 60 GPU cores instead of 72, but it's also got NVIDIA's new i500 LTE modem built into it. The processor is an ARM Cortex A9-R4, which was specially designed and optimized for the Tegra 4i. The processor clocks out at up to 2.3 GHz, for what that's worth. (OK, a lot of cycles is what that's worth.)

Before you get too hot and bothered by all this CPU/GPU talk, NVIDIA says we likely won't see any production devices until the toward the end of the year. So for now you'll just have to whet your appetite with the "Phoenix" reference platform NVIDIA's seeding. NVIDIA plans to show off Tegra 4i next week at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

We've got NVIDIA's full presser and complete specs of Tegra 4i after the break.

NVIDIA announces Phoenix reference phone for Tegra 4i platform

Posted: 19 Feb 2013 06:00 AM PST

Android Central

Following on from today's Tegra 4i announcement, NVIDIA has unveiled the reference smartphone for its new platform, dubbed "Phoenix." Described as a blueprint which manufacturers can use in designing their own Tegra 4i-based handsets, NVIDIA's Phoenix incorporates the quad-core Cortex A9-based CPU with battery saver core, as well as 60 GeForce GPUs and NVIDIA's programmable i500 modem core. NVIDIA's "Chimera" camera tech is on-board too, boasting such features as always-on HDR and HDR panoramas.

This isn't a product you're going to find in your local carrier store, nor is it something you'll be picking up online. Instead, it's designed to demonstrate what's capable with NVIDIA's new chips. Other specs include a 5-inch, 1080p display, a chassis thickness of 8mm and 4G LTE support, and NVIDIA says it runs the latest version of Android.

It's also likely the chipmaker will be showing off its new platform at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week, so keep it locked to AC in the week ahead for full coverage of NVIDIA's spicy new chips.
