Visa and Samsung partnership hopes to accelerate NFC mobile payments

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 11:22 AM PST

NFC has plenty of uses aside from mobile payments, however that is often where the topic seems to come back to. There are several solutions such as Google Wallet and ISIS, however neither are widespread in use. Some had thought that Google would have been able to convince people that they needed to be buying things with the swipe of a smartphone, however that doesn’t seem to have happened. Enter the next possibility, Samsung and Visa. These two companies have announced a new partnership in hopes to accelerate NFC-based mobile payments.

samsung_galaxy_s_III_review_sg_7-580x431-540x401241

This partnership is planning to use “Visa's expertise in payments and Samsung's leadership in mobile device technology” in an effort to “significantly accelerate the availability of mobile payments globally.” What this means moving forward — you will begin seeing Samsung devices come pre-loaded with support for Visa payWave payments.

The Visa payWave set-up is pushed as being able to “wave and pay” which really just works like any other NFC payment system in that you hold your phone over the terminal. Samsung and Visa have been talking up the partnership during Mobile World Congress, however we have yet to see any device announcements. Maybe (and according to rumor), we will see something on March 14 when Samsung announces the Galaxy S IV.

As of now we have only seen that the “Visa payWave mobile applet will be preloaded onto selected next-generation Samsung mobile devices.” Some of the selected devices portion will come down to specs. For example, the device will need NFC. The device will also need to feature an embedded secure element. With that, once available on a device, the user will be able to begin using Visa payWave in conjunction with a “mobile payment application provided by their financial institution.”

Alcatel One Touch Idol X hands-on: 5-inch 1080p display

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 10:47 AM PST

We mentioned the Alcatel One Touch Idol X announcement earlier and in addition to that, we also have some hands-on images to share. The One Touch Idol X is the handset with the edge-to-edge 5-inch 1080p display and Jelly Bean. There is also a variety of colors, quad-core processor and 13 megapixel rear-facing camera.

P1100112

The processor will clock in at 1.2GHz and users can also expect to find 16GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot for anything additional, 1GB of RAM, a 2.1 megapixel front-facing camera and LTE connectivity. One note on the rear-facing camera though, that will vary by market which means some may only see an 8 megapixel.

P1100116

The handset is comfortable to hold and the touchscreen seems to be fairly responsive. Bottom line here, the One Touch Idol X seems to be a nice step up for Alcatel. On that note, we have yet to see anything regarding a price. And well, we all know how that can be a make or break point when it comes to a new device.

P1100113

Aside from not revealing a price, Alcatel hasn’t said much in terms of release plans. So far we have heard that it will be available this year, but nothing in terms of markets and/or carriers. This is one we will likely keep an eye out for though. In the meantime, make sure to check out the images in the post above and the gallery below.

HP sells WebOS to LG, only it won’t be for smartphones

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 10:46 AM PST

Today we’ve just learned a lot about HP‘s upcoming plans. They’ve completely ditched WebOS on all fronts and look to be headed down the green street we call Android. This weekend they announced their first Android-powered device, the HP Slate 7, and now it has been confirmed that HP just sold WebOS to LG Electronics. There’s a few small important details regarding the deal, so read on for more information.

HP-TouchPad-hands-on-demo-19-slashgear-21-580x4071-540x378

First off WebOS has been basically dead for a hot minute. Many were hoping it would go open-source, but sadly that never fully happened even though they released kernel pieces to the Android developer community. Now today the news has been confirmed that they’ve sold off WebOS to LG Electronics. We’re not being told how much just yet, but you can bet it was no where near the $1.2 billion HP paid for it from Palm.

The most important part of this news is LG won’t be able to use it for any of their smartphones or tablets. Instead this operating system is only allowed in LG smart TVs and such. We’re seeing reports that LG doesn’t intent to use it on smartphones, and other reports stating they aren’t allowed to – so we’re still digging for all the details.

Many of the key members of the WebOS team have already left, some went to Google, and others are still around in a project called Gram. For now it appears that the LG WebOS team will stay at their two remaining facilities in Chicago and San Jose, California, while the rest will head to LG’s Silicon Valley Labs. LG now owns all the source code, engineers, and everything else that went along with it. Sadly we’ll only see parts of it end up in Smart TV’s.

Samsung Galaxy Victory brings LTE to the Virgin Mobile USA lineup

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 10:27 AM PST

Virgin Mobile USA has announced the immediate availability of the Samsung Galaxy Victory, which coincidentally, is the carriers first LTE smartphone. This may not be the lowest priced device in the Virgin Mobile pre-paid lineup, however it does bring a decent set of specs. Not to mention, the handset includes support for Google Wallet.

samsunggalaxyvictory4glte-gallery-angle-4

That bit aside, the Galaxy Victory features include a 4-inch display, dual-core 1.2GHz processor, microSD card slot, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera and 5 megapixel rear-facing camera with LED flash and 720p HD video recording. Other goodies for the Galaxy Victory include S Beam sharing thanks to the Wi-Fi Direct and NFC. The Galaxy Victory is even launching with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

While the phone seems to have a decent set of specs and price to match, part of the perk of going with Virgin Mobile is the low-cost month-to-month plans that start at $35. For that price you will get 300 voice minutes along with unlimited messages and data. Stepping up and you can grab 1200 minutes for $45 per month or unlimited minutes for $55 per month. All plans include unlimited messages and data.

Bottom line here, Virgin Mobile now has an LTE smartphone available and the price to pay will be $299.99. Otherwise, for those looking for something a bit lower in price, the carrier recently announced the Kyocera Event which is priced at $79.99. Needless to say, the specs on the Event are not as nice as the Galaxy Victory, but we realize that sometimes the price has to be the deciding factor when it comes to buying a phone.

LG Optimus L7 II, L5 II and L3 II hands-on: Coming in all sizes

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 10:05 AM PST

The folks from LG have unleashed a full array of smartphones here at MWC 2013, and we’ve been able to get our hands on all of them. For those who don’t want a massive 5.5-inch HD phone (since that isn’t for everyone) LG has already announced three additional smartphones to hit all the other respective size points. Just like last year, we now have the LG Optimus L series, only this time it’s the L II. Below is the new L7 II, L5 II, and L3 II. Odd names, but check em out.

lg_optimus_l7-ii_l5-ii_l3-ii_hands-on_sg_0

LG is aiming to deliver Android for any hand size with these smartphones. Ranging from 3.2-inches with the L3 II, to 4.3 with their L7 II. Our sister site SlashGear managed to grab plenty of photos of each little mid-range smartphone, so lets take a peek shall we. We’ll start with the L7 (pictured above) since it’s the biggest of the bunch, and has the best specs too.

lg_optimus_l7-ii_l5-ii_l3-ii_hands-on_sg_3

The new LG Optimus L7 II tops the chart for the series with a 4.3-inch display, but sadly is just 480 x 800 although is still a bright IPS panel. We were hoping for at least qHD, but that didn’t happen. These are all budget phones folks. Under the hood is a 1 GHz processor and 768MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, and a 2,460 mAh battery. These are all budget-aimed devices and certainly feel that way in your hand.

lg_optimus_l7-ii_l5-ii_l3-ii_hands-on_sg_8

Next is the LG Optimus L5 II (pictured above) and also available in black or white. This little guy comes in at 4-inches and the same WVGA resolution. You’ll get a 1 GHz processor and 768 MB of RAM again, and a 5 megapixel rear camera. Sadly they’ve dropped the battery down to 1,700 here but it does have a dual-SIM variant for certain regions. It is enjoying Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

lg_optimus_l7-ii_l5-ii_l3-ii_hands-on_sg_15

Last and certainly least, is the L3 II little smartphone for those tiny hands or the children in your life. The L3 comes with a 3.2-inch HVGA display, so the images certainly are far from crisp. You’ll be crunched on screen while trying to view webpages, but it will easily do the usual games and such for kids. If you were hoping for a 3.2-inch powerful smartphone this isn’t it. Its got an aging 1.0 GHz single-core processor, 512MB of RAM, and only a 3 megapixel camera on board. However, this will certainly be extremely low priced if not free on contract.

In short, these are budget devices, they feel that way, and hopefully the price will reflect that too. For now LG hasn’t announced carriers, partners, or pricing but surely we’ll be learning more about all three of these phones soon so stay tuned. Continue following all of our coverage from the event at our MWC 2013 Portal.

ZTE Grand Memo hands-on: Large display and powerful processor

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 09:54 AM PST

ZTE unveiled the Grand Memo here at Mobile World Congress and while it is hard to ignore the large size, the handset also has some other notable features. For example, the Grand Memo is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. Coincidentally, this is the first time we are seeing that particular processor being used. If you remember back, it was announced in early-January.

zte_grand_memo_hands-on_ac_1

At that time Qualcomm was touting the Snapdragon 800 as being for “premium mobile and computing devices.” Putting the processor aside, the handset also has 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and a 13 megapixel rear-facing camera. We couldn’t help but think 2GB of RAM and the option for 32GB of storage would have been nice though.

zte_grand_memo_hands-on_ac_7

Touching back on the display and you will find a resolution of 1280 x 720 which brings us to the other issue, a 1080p display would have been nice to see. Otherwise, the Grand Memo will round out with LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, a 3200 mAh battery and a 1.0 megapixel front-facing camera.

zte_grand_memo_hands-on_ac_2

And again here, we have that one step below thing going on as more often than not the front-facing camera is going to be a 2MP. Bottom line here, we are looking at a rather large display, powerful processor and high megapixel rear-facing camera, however it seems these are coming with some potential trade-offs in terms of the other specs. Finally, aside from the images included above, make sure to check out the full gallery below.

LG Optimus G Pro Hands-on: 5.5-inch HD powerhouse

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 09:23 AM PST

LG is here in Barcelona for Mobile World Congress on full attack mode. They’ve announced the new LG Optimus G Pro, and a slew of L series smartphones. We managed to grab some hands-on time with their new Optimus G Pro, and this thing is quite a powerhouse smartphone. Go ahead and say it, it looks like the Galaxy Note II. However, this thing has tons of features to set it apart.

lg_optimus_g_pro_hands-on_ac_1

This is LG’s new flagship smartphone to replace the impressive Optimus G that launched late last year, and it’s bigger, faster, full HD, and is super thin too. The addition of the dedicated home button is something we’re not a fan of and feel like they are going backwards, not to mention it looks eerily similar to that other Korean manufacturer. You know. Samsung, the one that also won’t drop the dedicated home button idea.

This is one of the largest smartphones around to not support a stylus, but LG’s software has all sorts of additional goodies and memo features just like Samsung to make full use of that 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080p full HD display. You’ll then be pushing that beautiful and bright HD screen with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 series 1.7 GHz quad-core processor accompanied by 2GB of RAM. They’ve added a 13 megapixel camera – so check that off the list of must-haves – as well as a 2.1 megapixel front shooter.

We know, it looks a bit like a Samsung. Get over it folks! Now for starters the model in our hands-on will be exclusive to Korea with the built-in TV tuner, and the US model will obviously be missing that option. That aside, we have the usual button layout, volume rocker locations, and the software is largely unchanged from the original Optimus G. We’ll be enjoying Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean initially, and LG has their array of apps too. Things like QMemo and QNote simply noted as “quick” features, then the multi-view mode to view two things on the display at once. Not multi-window, but one will be translucent and adjustable.

LG is not only aiming for Samsung’s design, but they’re also aiming for Samsung’s pockets. Stating the Optimus G Pro has a much better IPS panel than those Galaxy phones. Claiming it will be over 2.3x sharper and better looking. Then they’ve tossed in a 3,140 mAh battery for all-day usage, and works with wireless charging too.

It certainly is impressive on all facets, feels amazing in the hand, and has a beautiful display. If your pockets are deep enough to fit this phone stay tuned for a full review once it arrives in the US later this year.

Alcatel unveils the One Touch Idol X smartphone with 5-inch 1080p display

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 09:16 AM PST

Alcatel has announced the One Touch Idol X smartphone during Mobile World Congress. This handset has been announced with a decent display, however there are still some missing details. For example, Alcatel has yet to say exactly where the One Touch Idol X will be available. As for that display though, that is an edge-to-edge 1080p display that will measure in at 5-inches.

alcatel-one-touch-idol-x-540

Other specs for the One Touch Idol X include a quad-core 1.2GHz processor along with 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, 2000 mAh battery and Jelly Bean. The handset has a 2.1 megapixel front-facing camera as well as a rear-facing that will vary depending on market. The official details say the handset will have a 13MP, however some markets will only see an 8MP.

Connectivity will include 3G, as opposed to LTE and the handset will launch in several colors to include orange, red, yellow and blue. Just to recap here, the Alcatel One Touch Idol X seems to be a step up in terms of specs (as compared to previous model Alcatel handsets), however we still need to see how much it will end up selling for.

Not to mention, when the handset will actually be available for purchase. In the meantime, make sure to stick around for lots more Mobile World Congress coverage including some additional release details coming from Alcatel. It looks like they have not only announced some Android handsets, but also the One Touch Fire which will be running the Mozilla Firefox OS.

ZTE unveils the Grand Memo with 5.7-inch display and Snapdragon 800 processor

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 08:23 AM PST

We got a bit of a look at the ZTE Grand Memo a few weeks back. At that time the details were still unconfirmed, however as of today ZTE has offered an official announcement. Simply put, ZTE has confirmed the Grand Memo specs and it will indeed have a 5.7-inch (1280 x 720) 720p display. The handset will also be launching with Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor.

zte-grand-memo-android-phablet-0-580x386

The processor will be clocked at 1.5GHz and other specs will include 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, a 13 megapixel rear-facing camera and Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. ZTE also put their own touches on Android, of which one item includes a rather unique way to wake the handset. Instead of hitting a power button like many often do, you can wake the Grand Memo by doing a pinch-out gesture or by tapping and holding the display for a few seconds.

Some of the other goodies for the Grand Memo will be software related. ZTE has said the handset will launch with the ZTE Assistant app which brings power savings and security as well as ZTE Drive for Safety which is a navigation app. The handset will also have a rear-facing speaker with Dolby Digital Plus technology.

The specs seem rather nice and we cannot help but notice that this is the first time we are seeing the Qualcomm 800 being used. That bit aside though, ZTE has said the Grand Memo availability will begin in March for those in China. No mention of a US release, however the handset will also be coming to Europe “later this year.” Lastly, pricing and carrier details have yet to be announced.

ASUS Fonepad hands-on

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 07:54 AM PST

In addition to spending some hands-on time with the PadFone Infinity, we also set aside a few minutes to check out the Fonepad. This is a 7-inch tablet that will be arriving with full phone support. ASUS has said the Fonepad availability will begin in April and that it will be priced from $249. The key here, unlike the PadFone Infinity where the smartphone docks into the tablet, the Fonepad is the tablet, and the phone.

sg_asus_mwc2013_30-540x303

Aside from that still unique feature, the Fonepad will be bringing a display resolution of 1280 x 800 and similar to the Nexus 7, and will only have a front-facing camera. In this case the Fonepad will have a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera. Another point worth mentioning, ASUS has the Fonepad powered by an Intel processor. More specifically, an Intel Atom Z2420 processor at 1.2GHz.

sg_asus_mwc2013_27-540x303

Other goodies here include 8/16GB of internal storage space, a microSD card slot and 1GB of RAM. Graphics come courtesy of a PowerVR GX540 GPU. The Fonepad will be running Jelly Bean at launch and ASUS is pushing this one as a perfect tablet for those who want to carry just one device but want or need the “voice communication features of a smartphone and the entertainment opportunities afforded by a tablet.”

So how about it, anyone interested or willing to drop their current smartphone and tablet in favor of a tablet that can also make calls? We can see the appeal, especially for those who are making fewer and fewer voice calls, but there is still something to be said about being able to slide your phone in your pocket. That thought aside, make sure to check out these Fonepad hands-on images and stick around for more Mobile World Congress coverage.

ASUS PadFone Infinity hands-on

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 07:39 AM PST

ASUS announced the PadFone Infinity here at Mobile World Congress. This device, or more specifically, these two devices are being touted as offering a “premium design with premium performance.” The PadFone Infinity arrives as the latest generation of the PadFone family and the availability is expected to begin in March.

sg_asus_mwc2013_18

Perhaps more important for this post though, lets talk specs and hands-on time. The PadFone Infinity is a smartphone and has a companion tablet, the Infinity Station. The former has a 5-inch 1080p display and the latter has a 10.1-inch display. The smartphone is designed to dock into the tablet and is powered by a quad-core 1.6GHz Snapdragon 600 processor with 2GB of RAM.

sg_asus_mwc2013_16

Basically, just slide the smartphone into the dock on the back and you can sit back and enjoy everything on the larger display. You will notice some of the features such as the rear-facing camera come from the phone. Of course, that just brings the point that the Infinity Station is really just a display and battery. The PadFone Infinity has a 2 megapixel camera on the front and a 13 megapixel camera on the back.

Otherwise, battery life comes in the form of a 2400 mAh battery in the phone and another 5000 mAh in the tablet. The PadFone Infinity will be running Jelly Bean at launch. You can get a look at the PadFone Infinity with the Infinity Station in the hands-on images in the post and in the gallery below. And don’t forget Android Community will have plenty of additional Mobile World Congress coverage coming.

ASUS Fonepad unveiled as a 7-inch tablet with full phone support

Posted: 25 Feb 2013 06:55 AM PST

ASUS has officially announced the Fonepad, a 7-inch tablet which as the name would imply, will launch with full phone functionality. The Fonepad will bring a 7-inch IPS display with an HD resolution of 1280 x 800, an Intel Atom Z2420 processor and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Unlike the PadFone which may not ever make it to the US market, ASUS has said the Fonepad will arrive in March and priced from $249.

sg_asus_mwc2013_2

Additionally, the Fonepad will also be available in Europe. ASUS has said the European availability would begin in April. Pricing and availability aside, lets talk features. ASUS has said the Fonepad will have 3G and HSPA+ connectivity, 8 or 16GB of internal storage space, a microSD card slot, 1GB of RAM and a 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera.

Otherwise, the Fonepad will measure in at 10.4mm thick and weigh in at 340 grams. For those bordering on the why. As in why would someone need and/or want a tablet that is also a phone. Well, ASUS is pushing this as being “ideal for people who value both the voice communication features of a smartphone and the entertainment opportunities afforded by a tablet, but prefer the convenience of carrying just one device.” Makes sense in that respect.

Furthermore, it would also mean having just one bill with a carrier as opposed to having two (assuming you have a connected tablet with plan). In addition to the Fonepad, ASUS has announced a few accessories that will arrive at launch. These include the VersaSleeve 7 and Turn Case. The former is a wraparound cover with folding design and the latter is a hard-shell case with soft interior.

The price point should give a clue as to a release, so far ASUS has talked about the UK. The previous generation PadFone devices never made their way into the US and so far, there hasn’t been any mention of it coming this time around. Diving in with what has been detailed — the specs. Aside from the 5-inch display on the PadFone Infinity, the display will be 1080p (1920 x 1080) and with a ppi of 441.

Other specs include a quad-core 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, 2GB of RAM, 32/64GB of storage, 2 megapixel front-facing camera, 13 megapixel rear-facing camera and HSPA+ and LTE connectivity. The handset will also have the expected goodies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and NFC. In terms of the operating system, you can expect Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

On the tablet side, the Infinity Station will have a 10.1-inch 1920 x 1080 Super IPS display and 5000 mAh battery. The phone itself will have a 2400 mAh battery. ASUS has said that the Padfone Infinity will have a battery life of up to 19 hours with an increase to 40 hours when docked with the tablet.

Samsung Galaxy S IV event confirmed for March 14th – again

Posted: 24 Feb 2013 10:24 PM PST

The folks from Samsung will officially be announcing and unveiling the Galaxy S IV flagship superphone on March 14th at their Samsung Unpacked in New York City. We’ve been hearing a few different dates tossed around lately, and March 14th has been confirmed from multiple sources. However, today in Spain during the Mobile World Congress event they begun sending out invites for Unpacked.

image.cid

Just like years past, Samsung won’t be taking the stage at Mobile World Congress to showcase their new smartphone, and instead announced the Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet. They’ll be using their Unpacked Event on the 14th to steal all the limelight and unveil their new flagship device. The image above makes it officially official.

Are you guys ready for the next big thing? We sure are! Samsung’s Galaxy S IV should be an impressive phone, and Sammy is preparing to sell over 100 million units. They’ve ramped up production of their 4.99-inch full 1080p HD display, and rumors also suggest an 8-core processor will be powering the device. Interestingly enough the invite says Episode 1, which leaves us wondering if they have multiple events planned for the GS4.

Most like we’ll be seeing Samsung’s quad-core Exynos 5250 processor, and rumors have confirmed 2GB of RAM and a 13 megapixel camera under the hood. Samsung’s Orb software will be their version of Photo Sphere for 360 panorama photos, and we’ll be enjoying Android 4.2 Jelly Bean with the device. We’ll be live in NYC for the event so stay tuned right here at Android Community.

NVIDIA Tegra 4 hands-on: Benchmarks and Phoenix platform tested

Posted: 24 Feb 2013 01:20 PM PST

Back during CES the folks at NVIDIA announced their all new Tegra 4 quad-core mobile processor to take on the world. Then last week they revealed the new Tegra 4i with 4G LTE, as well as a new Phoenix reference smartphone platform. Now, this week at MWC we’ve had an opportunity to take a peek at their new superchip complete with benchmarks and plenty of pictures and video below.

frontal

NVIDIA’s new quad-core Tegra 4 with 72 GPU’s for amazing gaming performance is here present in a few reference tablets (not for sale) as well as their just announced Phoenix reference smartphone. For starters this is not final software, is in the early stages, but still gives us an idea of what to expect moving forward from team green. We got a quick glance at Real Boxing on the Tegra 4 – which looks amazing – as well as a few other games.

For starters this video below is the Phoenix reference phone running their 2.3 GHz quad-core Tegra 4i, which will hit the market later this year complete with integrated 4G LTE. The phone here is a 5-inch 1920 x 1080p display, 2GB of RAM, 13 megapixel HDR camera, and super thin. Just like NVIDIA detailed last week, they hope this reference design will help companies bring high-end smartphones with the Tegra 4i to market faster, and for under $300 off contract.

20130224_074115 backolow 20130224_074359

The game isn’t quite available yet, but this just shows the true power of the quad-core Tegra 4 and all those dedicated GPU cores for some of the best mobile gaming available. Their Project SHIELD will bring this to life even more with dedicated game controls. So far we’re still awaiting more announcements for Tegra 4 devices — but surely they are coming soon.

Next up as mention above is another game. This however is running on an unknown reference Tegra 4 tablet made in-house from NVIDIA. This is streaming the popular THD game Zombie Driver, only the entire game has been redesigned with true 1080p HD gaphics and full Tegra 4 support. Lets just say it looks freaking stunning. Then of course we’re using a game controller for an even better experience.

Then we tried to gauge potential real-life performance, but these all being reference devices without true power limits for day to day usage it was hard. We also weren’t able to grab screenshots but managed to run Quadrant, as well as the popular AnTuTu benchmark. Lets just say this superchip was impressive. Topping over 36,000 in AnTuTu and Quadrant was off the charts. Yes, that is 16,000 in Quadrant. The Tegra 3 barely broke the 8,000 mark after heavy heavy tweaking and overclocking. This Tegra 4 is a beast.

Screen Shot 2013-02-24 at 1.11.44 PM

We’ll be on the lookout for additional details and devices running the new Tegra 4 processor, but so far our initial impressions are pretty good. If NVIDIA can get these into smartphones and tablets in a timely manor things will be looking good. Stay tuned for NVIDIA news at our Tegra Hub, or Mobile World Congress news at the MWC 2013 Hub.
