Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 LTE accessories starting to appear at Verizon locations

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 03:57 PM PST

Galaxy Note 10.1 LTE screen protector

A friend just dropped some pictures of Verizon's Galaxy Note 10.1 LTE screen protector kits in our inbox, along with a note that the "products" will soon follow. This matches right up with what we heard last month at CES, so we're expecting to seem them on the shelves in very short order. Screen protectors don't usually get people excited, but we know plenty of folks have been waiting for this. There's a couple pictures after the break.

Thanks, Anon!

HTC One now up for pre-order on Rogers

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 03:36 PM PST

HTC One

Like so many carriers before it, Rogers in Canada has announced that it is now accepting pre-orders and reservations for the upcoming HTC One. New customers can get their pre-order in online to guarantee they'll have one when the device launches, and existing customers can "reserve" one for the same system -- although there doesn't seem to be any indication of whether or not existing customers are prioritized over new ones. The pricing will be the same regardless -- Rogers is charging $149.99 with a 3 year contract, which is a standard term in Canada. If you pre-order through Rogers before March 22, you're also entered into a contest to win a new Sharp HDTV with an HTC Media Link accessory.

Rogers is also reminding customers that HTC is offering $100 off the purchase of an HTC One if you trade in your old HTC device. If you're interested in picking one of these up as soon as they're available, hit up the source links below.

Bionfly

Retro-looking games are a big category right now, and Bionfly is a new entry that not only impresses now but has plenty of potential to offer more in the future. The game has just launched in the Play Store with throwback graphics, original lo-fi soundtrack and simple controls. We've seen games of this style before, but Bionfly still stands out as an independent game.

Hang with us after the break and learn a little more about Bionfly, a new 2D retro side-scroller game.

Apple vs. Samsung: Damages cut by $450 Million, new trial ordered

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 01:31 PM PST

Apple vs. Samsung

Just when you thought the Internet was safe from the the Apple v. Samsung courtroom drama, it comes back. Today Judge Lucy Koh, who is presiding over not one but two (and possibly now a third) trials between Apple and Samsung, has ordered the $1.05 Billion dollars awarded to Apple in August 2012 to be cut by $450,514,650. It seems there are some questions about per-product damages for 14 Samsung products found to be infringing. Like the Nexus S 4G, which totally looks like an iPhone.

To get things sorted and determine any actual damages for the devices in question, Judge Koh says we're going to need a new trial. Further deliberations could lead to an award of more than the $450 Million that was vacated, or less. Apple also has asked that pre-judgement interest be considered, and the court approved the 52-week Treasury bill rate (about 0.16-percent). In the end, Apple could very well end up winning more money than originally awarded after the new trial.

For us, all this means is that the price of your next iPhone or Galaxy S phone will have to be padded a little bit to cover legal fees. Samsung can afford to throw a billion dollars to Cupertino, and as we saw with the original decision, the lawsuits have done nothing to diminish interest in Galaxy S phones. As the popular saying goes, only the lawyers will win.

Now feel free to fill the comments with all your tasteful responses and thoughtful, loving words.

AT&T takes aim squarely at T-Mobile in newspaper ads

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 12:32 PM PST

AT&T Logo

AT&T has taken out full-page newspaper ads in The New York Times, USA Today and The Wall Street Journal today to remind people what it thinks of T-Mobile's network. The simple ad in traditional orange and white colors gives three bullet points about T-Mo's network offerings when compared to AT&T's: "2x more dropped calls", " 2x more failed calls" and "50% slower download speeds". AT&T wraps it up in at the bottom with a statement of "Don't be fooled by misleading claims. For the better network experience, count on AT&T."

We're not entirely sure where this is coming from, as AT&T is far from being threatened by the actions of T-Mobile considering it has about three times as many customers. It's possible AT&T is just getting out ahead of T-Mobile's upcoming launch of LTE and offering of "Apple products" in the coming months to make sure its customers don't get any crazy ideas about leaving Ma Bell. No matter the reason, it's entertaining to see the big carriers duke it out on a public stage.

The newspaper ad is quite large, so stick around after the break to see it.

Android 4.2.2 code - with full binaries - now pushing to Android Open Source Project

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 11:08 AM PST

Android 4.2.2

Google open-source guru Jean-Baptiste Queru has announced on the Android Building group that the Android 4.2.2 source code will shortly begin pushing to AOSP -- the Android Open-Source Project. The build number is the same as what's now being pushed to Nexus devices -- JDQ39  -- and the tag is android-4.2.2_r1.

In addition, proprietary bits for all supported devices have been published online, and Android 4.2.2 factory images are also available from Google's developer site. Significantly, JBQ points out the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 (all variants) now have a full set of proprietary binaries available online, bringing full AOSP support to these devices.

Good news for those wanting to roll their own Android, as well as anyone looking forward to Android 4.2.2 ROMs for other devices. Download info for the Nexus binaries can be found at the link below.

Rovio teaming up with Dreamworks for latest title, The Croods

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 09:50 AM PST

Rovio needs no introduction, the developers of the Angry Birds franchise, Amazing Alex and Bad Piggies have hundreds of millions of downloads to their credit around the globe. Breaking away from Angry Birds once more, Rovio has teamed up with Dreamworks to produce the official game of forthcoming movie, The Croods.

Billed as 'the worlds first modern family,' The Croods will hunt and gather their way through the Stone Age catching creatures along the way. Not much in the way of gameplay is shared at this moment in time, although the few screenshots posted on the Rovio website indicate this is nothing like the Angry Birds style of gameplay.

The Croods will be available from the Google Play Store and the Amazon Appstore on March 14, and will be free to download.

Photosphere Installer: An easy way to flash Photosphere on rooted devices

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 06:45 AM PST

Android Central

Yes, that's my LG Optimus Black, and yes, it is running Photosphere. It's the same Photosphere that distant relation the Nexus 4 is running too, not the LG version found on the Optimus G Pro. Where there's a will, there's usually a way in Android, and Photosphere is one of the headline new features in Android 4.2. We love it, as I'm sure many others do, and thanks to an app available in Google Play, rooted users can have it without any more effort than downloading and opening any other Android app.

Root access with Busybox and Android 4.1 are the only requirements. Since CM10 counts as Android 4.1, anyone running this or other Jelly Bean based custom ROM's should be fine. Upon opening the installer app for the first time, you're presented with the two steps to installation -- downloading the files and then installing them. That simple. A nice touch though is the ability to backup/restore a camera, and you can tell the app to either keep or remove the actual camera app on the device. Once installed, a quick reboot later and you're presented with the Android 4.2 camera app complete with Photosphere, and the Android 4.2 Gallery app required to view them.

Update: The dev just pinged us to say that an update has pushed out that should address a number of bugfixes.

Amazon tablet app now finally available in some European countries

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 04:05 AM PST

Android Central

For reasons not all that clear, tablet owners who wished to use the Amazon Mobile application outside of the United States have been squarely out of luck. More so, it's still disappointing that there has to be a separate tablet app at all. With this latest update to the application however, Amazon customers in Italy, France, Germany, Spain and the UK can now take advantage of shopping from their Android tablets.

The Amazon Mobile tablet app is compatible with tablets between 7 and 10-inches in size, and with screen resolutions from 1024x600 all the way up to 2560x1600. Android 4.0.3 and above is required, and you can grab a copy from the Play Store link above.

AT&T Sony Xperia TL Jelly Bean update now rolling out

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 03:51 AM PST

Xperia TL Jelly Bean

Following in the footsteps of its international cousin, the Sony Xperia T, AT&T's Xperia TL is now being updated to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. In addition to the underlying OS update and all the performance and feature improvements it brings, TL owners will get a new and improved camera app with "Superior Auto" mode, a redesigned home screen launcher and a new lock screen setup. (All features from Sony's latest handset, the Xperia Z.)

Based on our recent hands-on time with Jelly Bean on the Xperia T, we'd say TL owners will want to grab this update as soon as possible. There are no reports of the new firmware heading out over-the-air just yet, but it is available as a manual update through Sony's PC Companion app.

Any Xperia TL owners out there? Hit the comments and let us know how you get on with this latest update.

Runtastic adds Timer to their app portfolio, not just a stopwatch

Posted: 01 Mar 2013 02:56 AM PST

Android Central

Anyone into exercising apps will likely have heard of Runtastic. Their portfolio of exercise focused apps is quite, quite excellent combining superb functionality with excellent design. The latest app to join the collection is called Timer. But, it isn't just a stopwatch.

Timer is customizable to assist you to break down your work outs into sections. You enter the duration you desire for preparation, rest periods and working out, along with the number of repetitions and sets. Timer then counts down through each portion, with the option of voice feedback to notify you when you have reached the end. Voice output currently is available in five languages. Users on Jelly Bean can also take advantage of a notification that contains a pause and stop button as well as a visual countdown clock.

The app itself is a free download from the Google Play Store, but for a relatively small in-app purchase of £0.85/€0.99 you can create unlimited timers and remove the ads. It's another job well done from the Runtastic team, and we've captured a few in-app screenshots for you after the break.

NVIDIA shows off previous PS3 only title Burn Zombie Burn! running on Project Shield

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 07:18 PM PST

NVIDIA just this week showed off some impressive screenshots and gameplay video of new Tegra 4 optimized games, and now we've got a look at one of them running on Project Shield. Burn Zombie Burn!, previously a PS3 only title, has been ported over directly by NVIDIA to run on Project Shield with a Tegra 4 processor, and seems to perform exceptionally well. On top of just the basic game port, the team has apparently enhanced the game further, with new graphical flourishes and improvements.

Not only do controls work great because of the relatively similar layout to a console controller, but everything seems to run graphics-wise without a hiccup as well. Check out the video above to see Project Shield in action with this title, and if you want more information you can see NVIDIA's blog post at the source link below.

HTC user experience director on 'redefining' HTC Sense

Posted: 28 Feb 2013 05:20 PM PST

HTC Sense 5

The release of the HTC One and Sense 5 is a significant milestone for HTC. Gone are the days of iterative development and evolving HTC's user interface, and we're going to see a complete redesign. Some folks will hate it, some folks will love it, and some will dismiss it without ever using it -- the Internet is a fickle beast. All of us here are in agreement that it certainly looks interesting, and will be well worth a close look. The only thing anyone can be sure of is that the HTC One will certainly usher in a new era of HTC design, both in the hardware and the software.

Drew Bamford, Director of User Experience at HTC, has spent time with the new Sense 5. Probably more time than we can imagine. He took to the HTC blog today to talk a little about it, and the challenges of coming up with something new in an age when we've seen it all.

According to Bamford, research discovered three consistent things that needed considered before he and his team dove in and revamped Sense.

  • Most people don’t differentiate between apps and widgets.
  • Widgets aren’t widely used – weather, clock and music are the most used and after that, fewer than 10% of customers use any other widgets.
  • Most of you don’t modify your home screens much. In fact, after the first month of use, approximately 80% of you don’t change your home screens any more.

That meant a big overhaul was needed instead of the small polishing updates to Sense we've seen since the HTC Hero

It looks like they have accomplished just that. The BlinkFeed home screen borrows design elements from elsewhere and brings them to Sense 5 with a distinctive HTC look. Other changes, like the Zoe feature and a revolutionary new camera work with BlinkFeed to tie it all together in a way we've not seen before. Nobody can say how successful it will be, but we can get a little insight into just how the Sense team was inspired to build it. It's an interesting read, and even if you're not excited about the HTC One and Sense 5 you should give it a look.
