NOOK Store with in-app purchasing coming soon

Posted: 25 Mar 2013 12:26 PM PDT

For years now, Android and iOS users have been able to easily make in-app purchases though Google Play, iTunes, and the Amazon App Store. Soon, we will be able to add the Nook Store to the list thanks to a partnership between Barnes & Noble NOOK and Fortumo.

Barnes & Noble Nook

In-app purchases won’t be coming to Nook right away. Instead, they will be rolling out gradually over the next few months, with availability beginning in April. For customers, in-app purchasing offers easy access to the most popular games as well as free apps on NOOK, and gives users the ability to buy extra levels, virtual coins, and other upgrades. Just like the Amazon App Store and Google Play, once a customer has registered for in-app purchasing through the NOOK store, there's no need to enter credit card numbers before each purchase. Users simply click "pay" and the transaction is complete.

This is great news for developers. It means that they will now be able to monetize premium content for apps on devices such as the Nook HD and Nook HD+, and it will also provide teams with all the tools and resources they need to implement in-app purchasing, including a powerful dashboard with real-time insights on revenues. "We are thrilled to bring in-app purchasing to NOOK with Fortumo for our community of developers so they can foster a profitable relationship with their customers, while also providing our NOOK customers with a more in-depth app experience and an even wider selection of popular apps," said Claudia Romanini, VP of NOOK Apps, NOOK Media, LLC.

Barnes & Noble may be a little behind, but better late than never, right? We will make sure to keep you updated on any specific release dates and details as soon as we get them.

Google+ app update focuses on photos, posts, profiles and communities

Posted: 25 Mar 2013 09:59 AM PDT

google_plus_logo_720

A new 3.6 release of Google + which will go live in the Google Play Store today focuses on four key segments: photos, posts, profiles and communities.

Details in the updated version of Google+ include:

  • Posts include more text up front—from the original message, and from comments
  • Tapping video, photo or link attachments takes you directly to a watch page, lightbox or website
  • Image previews are rarely cropped, so you'll see portrait photos (for instance) in all their glory
  • Key actions like +1, reshare and comment are displayed more prominently in each post
  • You can swipe through photo albums inline

Those of you who like to “share your where” will find that the app and service allows users to display your current location on your Google+ profile. Of course this is entirely optional and can toggled at your every whim.

  • If you enable this option, you'll then decide who can see your best-available location across Google
  • Like always, you can be as public or as private as you want to be
  • When someone with permission visits your profile, for example, they'll see your current whereabouts underneath your name

The Communities segment of Google+ for Android also gets better with the update as it now allows users to adjust the volume of community posts in the Home stream.  Other details include the option to invite people to a community, or reshare items with a community as well as Member search, content moderation, and report-remove-ban support for community managers.

CyanogenMod Founder Steve Kondik bids farewell to Samsung, briefly praises Galaxy S4

Posted: 25 Mar 2013 08:40 AM PDT

Steve “Cyanogen” Kondik announced today via Google+ that he would be parting ways with Samsung. The Android icon took an engineering job with the Mobile giant about 18 months ago, and has now said that he has “decided to do something new”.

In the post on G+, Kondik took some time to offer up thoughts on the new Galaxy S4, saying that it “feels quite a bit more solid than the S3″, and also stated the the new TouchWiz UI “feels like it has been send a few years back in time to the Froyo days”. However, he offset this comment by saying the UI is “more consistent”, and also took one further opportunity to praise the S4, saying “specwise, this device blows the competition out of the water”.

Concerning his departure from Samsung, Kondik doesn’t offer up much, simply stating that his leaving isn’t “because of anything in particular”, but said that “Samsung was Great. Just decided to do something new.”

T-Mobile officially moves to no-contract plans, pricing stays competitive

Posted: 25 Mar 2013 07:16 AM PDT

Last week, we saw a leak of some possible prices for T-Mobile’s ‘UNcarrier” plans. The company has officially made its move into the contract-free service arena as of today, as heading to their website reveals pay-as-you-go plans to be the only options for service.

You get defaulted to an “unlimited” plan that includes unlimited talk, text, and 500MB of data – with throttling to 2G speeds after hitting that mark – for $50 / month . The prices then move up in 2GB increments, all the way up to 12GB, with each 2GB uptick costing an additional $10 / month. WiFi hotspot / tethering is included in the price of these tiers.

you can also choose truly unlimited – as in no throttling – for just $70 / month, with a catch. You only get 500MB of hotspot at that level. you can get an additional 2GB of tethering for $10, or 4GB for $20.

Family plans also become a thing of the past with T-Mo’s new structure. You can now add additional lines to one of the aforementioned plans for $30 / month, but there seems to be a current promotion to add those additional lines for free. Each new line comes with unlimited talk and text, and simply use their own data plan separate from the other lines at the same pricing tiers.

Handset subsidies have also gone away. No, you won’t be paying full price up front for your new device (unless you really want to). T-Mobile will instead opt to let you setup payment plans for your new devices. There’s a different down payment for each device – generally about $99 – that then gets moved to a monthly payment system, usually around $15 – $25 per month. There is no interest included in the cost of the device, which is a plus.

While T-Mobile hasn’t made any official announcement about this pricing overhaul, it’s more than likely that it will be the focus of the upcoming event on Tuesday in New York City. Be sure to hit the source link below to check it all out for yourself, and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini details and pictures leaked

Posted: 25 Mar 2013 06:58 AM PDT

samsung galaxy s4 mini

Thanks to an insider for SamMobile, leaked images show that Samsung may be getting ready to release another phone- this one a sibling of the Samsung Galaxy S3 mini. These photos show a device with the same design layout as the Galaxy S4 but in a much smaller form, just as the S3 mini was a copy of the Galaxy S3.

The Galaxy S4 mini (or model number GT-I9190 as it is currently being called,) has a 4.3-inch screen, runs Android 4.2 with TouchWiz skin just like the S4, and has a Super AMOLED screen that is said to have 256ppi pixel density, compared to the S4′s 441ppi. It’s also said to come with a more modest 1.6GHz dual-core processor instead of the S4′s 1.9GHz quad-core.

This means people looking for a smaller version of the Galaxy S4 will have an option, however they will definitely have to compromise what is inside. According to SamMobile, the Galaxy S4 mini is expected to be launched sometime in June or July this year, although Samsung is yet to confirm whether the handset is even in production.

HTC talks about delay for HTC One, confirms it’s camera-related

Posted: 25 Mar 2013 06:26 AM PDT

htc_logo_03_720

HTC has confirmed that the reason for the delays in getting the HTC One to market is, in fact, related to the camera.  In speaking with the Wall Street Journal, HTC marketing lead, Benjamin Ho, said it was because the Ultrapixels camera is specially-made for them and the demand is very high.

"Our friends in the media have been asking why there has been a delay in shipments for the new HTC One, whether there is a component shortage," he said. "There is some shortage, because the phone's camera was designed specifically for us, and production cannot be ramped up so quickly."

Mr. Ho also indicated that HTC plans to shed the “Quietly Brilliant” tagline this year as it looks to fight back for more smartphone market share.

"We have a lot of innovations but we haven't been loud enough," said Mr. Ho, a Singaporean who is HTC's third marketing chief in less than two years.  The new approach, he says, will be bolder.

What do you guys think the general public will say about HTC once the HTC One finds its way into the hands of buyers? Will they find it to be a solid luxury experience in the same lines as the early reviews?
