An unannounced LG D801 smartphone looks to be one of the most powerful devices to date, according to recently uncovered GLBenchmark GPU benchmarking scores. Found to be running Android 4.2.2, the LG handset also figures to have a  Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974) processor and Adreno 330 GPU . Screen resolution is listed at 1794 x 1080, or 1920 x1080 factoring in virtual buttons, so we might expect a display of around 5-inches.

WSJ: Facebook’s Android announcement is home screen experience

Posted: 29 Mar 2013 09:13 AM PDT

facebook_phone_720

There is no Facebook phone. According to the Wall Street Journal, Facebook’s upcoming Android announcement is actually more of a home screen experience and not an actual device. That rumored HTC Myst? It’s just the first device to come from a partner, which, in this case is HTC.

The social network has been developing new software for mobile devices powered by Google's Android operating system that displays content from users' Facebook accounts on a smartphone's home screen–the first screen visible when they turn on the device, people familiar with the situation said.

From the sounds of it, you’ll be thrown right into Facebook the moment the phone powers on. Reportedly, Facebook is working with other handset makers with hopes to bring the experience to additional devices.

Facebook will initially demonstrate the capability on smartphones from HTC, these people said, but has been working to reach similar arrangements with other device makers.

Factoring all the recent chatter in, this seems to be the case for the April 4 event. Given the rumor that the Facebook experience will be marketed as “more than just an app” we’re inclined to believe the WSJ is on the mark.

The question now becomes, “How does this differ from HTC’s BlinkFeed feature found in the HTC One?” What’s more, the next question that comes to mind is whether we can turn off the features and stick with the general Android experience.

Unlike AT&T, however, there is no indication as to what the pricing structure will be for the handset. Our instinct tell us that it will be like-for-like across the board, as was the case with last year’s models.

This innovative smartphone will be the latest Galaxy smartphone to join U.S. Cellular's line-up of 4G LTE devices … For more information and to sign up for email alerts on availability, please visit http://www.uscellular.com/campaigns/index.html?id=m&page=coming-soon.html.

Not all developers are fans of Android

Posted: 29 Mar 2013 08:30 AM PDT

Don’t ask a developer, publisher, or investor if Android is a good platform to develop on–they will all give you different answers. During a panel at the Game Developers Conference, PlayJam founder Jasper Smith said he believes only about 26 percent of developers prefer working with Android. The question on everybody’s mind is, why?

android_crosshairs_games

In terms of the smartphone market, Android currently has the most marketshare. (Most of the smartphones in the United States are Android devices, and Nielsen estimates that Google’s devices make up 51 percent of the American smartphone market.) Since phones are a huge piece in the gaming world, anyone who has a smartphone is a potential customer. It only makes sense that mobile game developers would want to tap into that. Sadly however, not everyone sees Android as a great opportunity.

"Android is not a great environment — certainly not for graphics. Our programmers loath it," said Chris Doran, the founder of Geomerics, (which helps developers incorporate light into their games) during the same panel. "We have to do it; it's pretty dominant. But it's not good for graphics at all. Google just doesn't put enough love into it."

There is still a fair share of problems with graphics capabilities, and for developers that just makes their job even harder. But just like any platform, wrinkles need to be ironed out before it is completely seamless.

People didn't love developing for iOS at first either.

Michael Ludden, the technical marketing manager of Samsung, was quick to point out that people didn't love developing for iOS at first either. But as the tools advanced, so did the love for the platform. Tell us, where do you see game development for Android in the future?

Could Andy Rubin be headed to Facebook?

Posted: 29 Mar 2013 07:51 AM PDT

If you’re the type who like to read tea leaves, you might be interested in this next one. Andy Rubin may be headed to Facebook, according to someone (Jean-Baptiste Su) who has known him for years.

While he doesn’t outright claim this to be fact, he makes a semi-valid argument as to how it could be possible that Andy Rubin is en route to the social networking giant. From his perspective, Andy’s leaving Android behind was far too sudden and seemed to come from nowhere.

But today's invite for Facebook's Android event, next Thursday, got me thinking again. Did Facebook make an offer Andy couldn’t refuse, to re-imagine Android for example, no strings attached, no budget. Forget about Chrome and other useless Google services. Just a beautiful, simple, more social, mobile operating system.

The Forbes writer also tosses out the fact that Andy has been busy on Facebook recently with a new cover photo, a profile picture, and more.

So, what if?

Could just be a string of coincidences, right? But what if? What happens if Andy Rubin picks up with Android over at Facebook and starts an entirely different endeavor? How does that make you feel? Do you even care? Heck, do you even know who Andy Rubin is?

We could find out in less than a week if there’s any truth to the speculation; Facebook is holding a “new home on Android” event on April 4.

Google Glass will be manufactured in the United States

Posted: 29 Mar 2013 07:24 AM PDT

Lately, it has become increasingly harder to find quality, American made items in this country. Cheaper manufacturing prices over-seas means bigger profits for companies at home. With so much production happening outside our own country, the news that Google Glass will reportedly be made in America makes us giddy with delight!

According to a report from The Financial Times, Google will be manufacturing Google Glass headsets at a Foxconn plant in Santa Clara, California. This is a real public relations win on Google’s part, thanks to all the coverage of Apple’s manufacturing practices and the problems workers face in manufacturing facilities over-seas. In a sense, Google is sending the message that it believes in American manufacturing so much that it’s willing to bet its biggest product launch ever on it.

Only a few thousand Glass devices are expected to be manufactured in the coming weeks, though that might change once Google announces its full launch plans. It is also unclear if Google will keep making the headsets in the United States. However, with everything being made in China anymore, we have to say we appreciate Google for taking the steps to keep their technology at home.

Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Facebook phone to be marketed as “more than just an app”

Posted: 28 Mar 2013 08:32 PM PDT

facebook_logo_720Despite Mark Zuckerberg’s insistence to the contrary, the Facebook phone looks to be a done deal. According to details obtained by 9to5google, an HTC handset is being designed with a custom version of Android. Reportedly, development is so far along that the ad campaigns are already set and ready to go.

As a nod to this phone being a much expanded version of the Facebook application found on iOS and standard Android devices, one of the tag-lines for the device is "more than just an app".

So what would a Facebook phone look like? Those who have seen the device say it calls to mind the iPhone with a home button in the center, flanked by capacitive function keys. The handset is said to be roughly the size of an iPhone 5 with rounded edges and a beveled design.

According to Tech Crunch sources, the project could fall under the name of "Facebook Home". Considering the teaser mentions a “new home on Android” this makes a bit of sense. Further, it sounds as if the overall user interface could be a skinned launcher. Able to run the full suite of Android apps, the UI would be quick access to Facebook apps and services.

Whatever the case is, we’ll be watching the rumors over the next few days as we run up to the April 4 event!

Facebook invites us to see their “new home on Android” next week

Posted: 28 Mar 2013 07:10 PM PDT

image001

Well, this is certainly interesting stuff. Facebook just dropped an invitation in our inbox, asking for us to “Come See Our New Home on Android”.

Most likely this is the unveiling of a new, refreshed Android application that falls in line with the recent chances to the overall web experience.

Just for giggles, we’ll remind you that Facebook phone rumors have been bubbling to the surface again over the last few weeks. An HTC “Myst” has been getting some traction as of late with specs that call for a 4.3-inch 720P HD display, dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 1GB RAM, and 5-megapixel rear camera. The front side will feature a 1.6-megapixel camera and the Myst will also get the standard fare of connectivity (LTE and HSPA as well. We would also assume a suite of Facebook apps will come with this experience.

It’s worth noting that return shuttles are not slated to begin until three hours after the 10AM start time. Sounds like Facebook might have penciled in an hour for attendees to get their hands on the device?

What say you?

Will we see a new Facebook app on April 4 or is it the next generation of Facebook phone?
