Facebook App Updated Again, This Time Less Annoying And Legitimately

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 11:22 AM PDT

Facebook Android app

Facebook annoyed many last week when it tried forcing users to upgrade to the latest version within the app itself. This time around, Facebook has updated the Android app, but pushed the update through Google Play. You can now upload a profile photo, better manage group messaging, and report posts for spam. The social network wants a unified experience across all users and since not everyone had the app set to automatically update, many were still using older versions. While last week’s method of pushing out an update makes sense, there are some issues. First of all, Facebook violated Google Play’s Developer Distribution Agreement. Under 4.5 Non-Compete:

“You may not use the Market to distribute or make available any Product whose primary purpose is to facilitate the distribution of software applications and games for use on Android devices outside of the Market.”

However, Google didn’t nor has yet to say or do anything about that. Another issue is a new permission for the Facebook Android app that allows it to “Download files without notification”. This, again, violates the Developer Distribution Agreement and makes way for Facebook to push out updates through the app itself, bypassing Google Play. Were you annoyed with last week’s update?

Guy Kawasaki hints at possible hardware customization for the X Phone

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 10:55 AM PDT

Motorola_X_Google

Motorola advisor Guy Kawasaki has left an interesting video on his Google+ page of the Porsche Exclusive with an insightful little comment, “Wouldn’t it be great if you could personalize your phone like this?” Now, the cool thing about the Exclusive is that you’re able to completely customize the vehicle to how you want it. Different paint jobs, stereo, whatever. However, not too long ago, we heard rumors that customers would be able to customize hardware on the X Phone, which would be a significant first in the smartphone industry.

Is it a just coincidence that Kawasaki posted this video? Sure. Maybe cars and smartphones are two of his favorite hobbies and he likes to daydream about the best aspects of both industries. But Motorola needs a kickstart and Google needs to wrangle some power away from Samsung, so something revolutionary like this may not be as far off as we think.

Meizu Rumored To Launch Full HD MX3 Powered By The Exynos 5 Octa

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 10:18 AM PDT

Meizu MX3

2013 is shaping up to have some great phones and Meizu is getting in on the action with the MX3. Hinted on the Meizu News Facebook page, the MX3 will feature a 5.1-inch full HD display, Exynos 5410 Octa processor, and a narrower bezel. It’s still a rumor and seems that Xiaomi has a head start with the release of the Mi-3. What separates the Meizu MX3 from Xiaomi’s Mi-3 however is the processor. While the Mi-3 packs a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, the MX3 features Samsung’s latest generation 8-core processor. We’ll keep you posted on when (and if) Meizu announces a release date, pricing, and more specs.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 pre-registrations four times higher than Galaxy S III says UK retailer

More evidence that Samsung likely has a smash hit with the Galaxy S 4 comes from UK  retailer Carphone Warehouse which is reporting pre-registrations are four times higher than what they saw for the Galaxy S III. This follows on the heels of a report from another UK retailer, Phones4U, that reported Galaxy S 4 pre-registrations were running 40% higher in the first forty-eight hours compared to the Galaxy S III.

Carphone Warehouse’s Chief Operating Officer Graham Stapleton says the huge number of pre-registrations is a sign of “how hot the Galaxy S4 is going to be.” You can read the full press release from Carphone Warehouse after the break.

SUPERCHARGED DEMAND FOR GALAXY S4
Android fans scramble for new handset prompts 'busiest pre-registration period ever'

London, 20 March 2013 – Carphone Warehouse has today announced that interest in Samsung's newest Galaxy S4 smartphone has been 'off the charts' compared with its predecessors. The UK's largest independent mobile retailer has so far received more than four times (446%)* as many pre-registrations for the Galaxy S4 than it did when Samsung announced its last flagship device, the SIII, in 2012.

Graham Stapleton, Chief Operating Officer at Carphone Warehouse, says, "The vast number of pre-registrations we've had for this device is evidence how hot the Galaxy S4 is going to be. The launch event in New York clearly captured the imagination of many of our customers – acting as the driving force for the busiest pre-registration period we've ever seen!

"The Galaxy SIII launch broke records last year and was always going to be a tough one to beat, but the S4 is already proving to be a more than capable step up in the series that will inspire many people to make the switch to Android from other operating systems. This device is the one to watch for 2013."

The Samsung Galaxy S4 will be available from Carphone Warehouse across all major networks from 26th April.  To register your interest, visit www.carphonewarehouse.com/new-samsung-galaxy-phone. Tariff and pricing details will be announced closer to the launch date in April.

*SIII pre-registration figures taken 25th – 30th April 2012 compared with S4 pre-registration figures taken 15th – 18th March 2013

New Hack Allows Bypass Of Pin-Secured Lockscreen On Galaxy Smartphones

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 09:45 AM PDT

Galaxy Smartphone Hack

A new hack has been revealed which allows people to bypass a pin-secured lockscreen on Galaxy smartphones. Discovered by Terrence Eden who uncovered a Galaxy Note II security flaw earlier this month, by using a combination of keypresses and commands, someone can unlock the screen. The exploit comes from placing a failed emergency call where the screen is unlocked very briefly. On the flip side, Samsung is already working on a software fix and this hack only allows access for a very short period of time. Terrence uploaded a video to YouTube showing the hack which you can check out below. In the meantime, don’t leave your Galaxy smartphone just laying around.

HTC announces the E1 dual-SIM smartphone featuring Jelly Bean

HTC_E1_603e_Dual-Sim

Ladies and gents— say hello to the HTC E1 smartphone. Also known as the 603e smartphone, the E1 is going to be a dual-SIM device featuring a host of goodies inside including Android 4.1, a 4.3-inch WVGA Super LCD2 display, a dual-core chip and a 5MP camera. Unfortunately, the device looks to be destined for Chinese markets only as of this time, but if you do live out there— it’ll cost you 1,799 CNY (or roughly $290 USD), which seems like it could potentially be a steal for lots of potential folks in the market for a new smartphone.

No word yet on when the device will be available, but we suspect it’ll be in retail outlets soon.

The Galaxy S 4 costs $244 to make and utilizes 63% of Samsung’s own parts inside

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Samsung_Galaxy_S_4_Parts_Cost

In something that shouldn’t really be too surprising, it’s reported that the freshly unveiled Galaxy S 4 smartphone actually doesn’t cost too much to make and utilizes mostly Samsung-branded flare on the inside. According to the IHS, the unlocked variant of the device costs a mere $244 (when the $8.50 manufacturing cost is added in) to manufacture, which is $30.50 more than what it cost to manufacture the Galaxy S III. Additionally, the teardown of the HSPA+ version of the device reveals everything that we already know including the 4.99-inch SuperAMOLED display, the super fast Octa-Core processor built-in and the full array of sensors and all that good stuff. The most astounding part about the teardown is not seeing what was mentioned above, but rather the amount of Samsung-branded components inside such as the display and touch-screen module, as well as the apps processor, power management integrated circuit and of course— the SDRAM. When all is said and done— a whopping 63% of the Galaxy S 4′s internal parts are Samsung products. Impressive indeed.

Now before you ask— don’t go holding your breath for a sub-$300 Galaxy S 4. After all— Samsung does have its heavy-duty marketing to maintain so it can make a buck or two.
