Source: LG to hold New York press event on May 1

lg_logo3_720w

We just received word from one of our readers advising that LG will be hosting some sort of press event in New York on May 1. While they were not able to tell us what LG might be planning we have an idea – U.S. launch of Optimus G Pro. At least we hope that’s what LG has up its proverbial sleeve. What’s more, we’d love to see the flagship device announced for all major carriers. Seeing as how Samsung and HTC are ready to blanket the airwaves with their big releases, we’d like to see LG keep pace.

With only a few weeks to go before the rumored May 1 event we might soon expect invitations to start rolling out.

Cheers to youknowwho!

Verizon readying Device Payment Plan option for smartphones

Posted: 12 Apr 2013 12:20 PM PDT

Verizon may soon introduce an option for customers which allows them to pay full retail cost for devices, according to details obtained by Droid Life. Following in the footsteps of T-Mobile’s UNcarrier strategy, the option will presumably let subscribers pay for handsets over a two-year plan. Of course, all of this is speculation and has not been confirmed by Verizon. With that in mind, it’s hard to imagine anything but spreading out the cost of your smartphone.

Verizon’s CEO Lowell McAdam recently indicated that he would not be opposed to a full price option for handset just so long as consumers were interested. Considering Verizon today further clarified its stance on device upgrades and eligibility, this could be construed as a sign of forthcoming changes.

The day is here, Facebook Home is in the Google Play Store and ready to transform your existing handset into a Facebook Phone. That is, provided, you own one of the select devices with official support. So far the only models on the market with Facebook Home’s blessing are the Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy Note 2, and HTC One X+. Looking ahead a few weeks there will also be support for the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One.

How many of you are willing to give this a shot for your home screen? How many of you are considering going with the HTC First and starting fresh with a new phone?

Big Android BBQ 2013 puts call out for sponsors, volunteers, and speakers

Posted: 12 Apr 2013 10:30 AM PDT

big_android_bbq_2013_720

It’s hard to believe it but we’re halfway toward this year’s Big Android BBQ. Having just passed the “less than 6 months to go” mark, the fourth (already!) event is slated to kick off on October 10 in Dallas, Texas.

In an effort to help make this year’s conference the best one yet, we’re looking to help drum up interest on three fronts: speakers, sponsors, and volunteers. Head to the official website for the Big Android BBQ where you can learn more about each of the categories. While you’re at it, grab the Android app and keep up to date as well.

With so many speakers and sessions, the Big Android BBQ is your opportunity to get your next project underway by networking with experts providing diverse experiences in Android programming.

Not a developer? But are a huge fan of the little green robot and want to have a good time with other like-minded individuals? The Big Android BBQ has you covered! With sessions for enthusiasts and evening activities, we promise you'll have the time of your life this October!

If you have not attended one of these events in the past and want to learn more about the Big Android BBQ, be sure to check out the website or perhaps the handy infographic. We might be a little biased here but it’s one of our favorite times of the year, getting together with developers and enthusiasts with one common interest. Don’t take our word for it, though, 94% of those polled plan to return for this year’s festivities.

Given that the early bird tickets have already sold out we expect the rest of the lineup and event to come together quickly.

Android isn’t just fun and games, it also helps keep the streets safe

officer phoneIf you have an Android, you know how amazing the platform really is. It beautifully syncs with Google services, the endless apps to choose from are great, and in the end the most important part is that it’s reliable. So reliable in fact, that New York began distributing Android smartphones to police officers to help assist in their duties.

The NY Police Department has distributed around 400 dedicated Android phones to its officers since last summer. The phones, which cannot make or receive calls, allow officers on patrol to look up a person's criminal history, verify identification with access to computerized arrest files, police photographs, and state Department of Motor Vehicles databases. Officers also have access to the names of every person with an open warrant, arrest record or previous police summons, a prior domestic incident report, residents with orders of protection against them, registered gun owners, and the arrest photographs of every parolee in the area. The officers can even find video surveillance cameras that are near points of interest.

The phone application (details withheld for obvious reasons) being used is significantly different from the computers installed in patrol cars. With the laptops, the Internet connection can be slow and even nonexistent in some areas of the city, and officers have to log in to separate databases with multiple passwords to retrieve information. This takes time, and in some cases leads to missed information.

Donna Lieberman, the executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, said though the new phone technology held "enormous promise to improve policing and public safety," she had concerns. She is worried about "whether it will become a vehicle to round up the usual suspects, to harass people" based on information found in the police databases.

Could this be a good thing for our officers, or do you see it becoming a mishandled tool? In my own opinion, I think this could really help protect citizens and officers alike, and it is amazing to hear Android is the base for it all. Hopefully in the near future the distribution of Android smartphones will expand to other stations and with proper use will greatly influence communities in a positive manner. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!

In Brief: 8 Android-related things you should know (April 12, 2013)

Posted: 12 Apr 2013 07:04 AM PDT

In Brief is a compilation of notifications, rumors, photos, videos, infographics, and Android-related news tidbits which, for whatever reason, did not end up with a post of its own on AndroidGuys. These are things that we still feel are worth knowing, even if in a passing manner. Consider it a grab-bag of Android goodies. If you have something that you think is worth a mention on AndroidGuys, be sure to reach out to us via our contact page.

This week features a few new kickstarters, the Satechi travel speaker, a TrustGo Mobile Security app, The Humble Bundle deal, and much more!

flaxus stylus

Let’s start this week off with an interesting Kickstarter campaign about a wearable stylus. FLAXUS, the world’s first fashion bracelet and mobile device stylus in one, is a slap bracelet that allows wearers to keep their stylus within arms reach, and gives users easy access to it anytime and anywhere. It looks like they have reached their goal, but are still looking for support. Visit their site for more details:  http://bit.ly/FLAXUSKS.

earbuds

While we are on the topic of Kickstarters, here’s another one to look at. Rob Honeycutt, founder of Timbuk2, has decided to bring his manufacturing experience to the consumer electronics market with Elroy, a Bluetooth device that conveniently clips to a user's clothing allowing the earbud cord to be just ⅓ the length of normal headphone cords. Not only does Elroy eliminate tangled cords, but it also provides a magnetic docking station for earbuds when they're not in use. You can check out his campaign here: http://bit.ly/ElroyK

satechi btIn the market for a speaker that travels well and allows hands-free calling? Satechi may have just the right one for you.  The BT Touch Speaker is a compact and portable Bluetooth speaker. This small box is able to fill a room with crystal clear audio via its 2.5 X 2 watt dual-channel speaker system.  The integrated built-in mic also allows it to double as a hands-free calling device that is compatible with any Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. Interested? The Satechi BT Touch Speaker is available for just $49.99 at Satechi.net and Amazon.com.

humble bundle

Here is a great way to check off your good deed for the week. Humble Bundle HQ has released the Humble Mobile Bundle, a weekly, pay-what-you-want promotion where fans can directly support developers, give to charity, and purchase games for Android devices. With this deal buyers have the option to contribute to The Electronic Frontier Foundation (Internet freedom non-profit) or The Child's Play Charity (providing technology & games for kids in hospitals). To check them out or make a purchase, visit The Humble Bundle.

fieldrunners

Fieldrunners 2 (from SubAtomic Studios) is finally coming to Android in April! Android fans have been drooling for the game since its release on iOS last July, and finally development is almost complete. Price, marketplace and specific launch date are TBD while the beta testing is still in progress. Click the link here to keep up to date with breaking news.

trustgo security

Looking for a security option to protect you while downloading apps on your phone or tablet? What looks like a harmless app could be full of viruses and in turn track your location, upload contacts, and more. If malware and data leaks have you worried, take a look at the TrustGo Antivirus and Mobile Security App. They were recently ranked #1 in a test of 22 security companies and have come up with an app that is simple and easy to use, as well as completely free. Check it out on Google Play.

kik messenger2

Kik Messenger, the messaging service that does more than chat, announced this week that they have surpassed 50 million registered accounts! Kik users can exchanging videos, sketches, smileys and more, with apps that have been built using their very own Kik API. And they just recently introduced Kik Cards, a built in HTML5 feature that lets users search for and send YouTube videos, find and share images, Reddit pics and GIFs, and create sketches and memes – all without leaving Kik and without downloading anything new! To see what it is all about, go to www.kik.com

ravensword shadowlands

To round off the week, if you are looking for a new RPG to play (during lunch breaks, your bosses lengthy monthly meeting, etc) I highly recommend you check out Ravensword: Shadowlands. Cresent Moon Games, the award-winning studio that created Ravensword: The Fallen King, has created a 3D world that allows you to gather powerful weapons, collect hundreds of items, increase your skills, and follow a deep story-line to solve the mysteries of the Kingdom of Tyreas. Priced well at just $6.99 on Google Play and featured in TegraZone, this is one that will keep your interests peaked for quite a while. (Rated at Medium Maturity.)
