Leaked images confirm HTC One coming to T-Mobile April 24th

Posted: 15 Apr 2013 03:40 PM PDT

Have you been patiently waiting on the edge of your seat to find out when T-Mobile was going to add the HTC One to their line-up? Well scoot on back, because thanks to two leaked images this afternoon, we finally have an answer.

HTC One T-Mobile

A T-Mobile retail store planogram, as well as well as an email screenshot seem to confirm that the HTC One will be available to customers in “select stores” on April 24th. Sadly, this means some stores won't be carrying the device, at least in the beginning. However, they will probably release the phone to all stores in a trickle-down manner just like they did with the Samsung Galaxy 3. To those who can get their hands on the device, the HTC One will be available for a $99 down payment with $20 monthly installment payments for 24 months. Finally, fans have a date (even if it is still hush-hush.) As always, we will make sure to update you as soon as T-Mobile makes it official.

Verizon’s Device Payment Plan starts April 21

Posted: 15 Apr 2013 11:32 AM PDT

A few days ago we reported that Verizon Wireless was readying a deal that would allow customers to join a payment plan and pay full retail cost for devices. Today, we learned that the payment plan will be available starting April 21st.

To make the change as effortless as possible, Verizon reports that they are making the following changes to their upgrade plans:

  • Customers on a two-year agreement will be eligible for an upgrade at 24 months vs. today’s early upgrade eligibility at 20 months. As always, customers may purchase a new phone at the full retail price at any time.
  • Customers also have the option of purchasing a phone at full price at any point before their contract expires and beginning April 21, some devices will be available for purchase through the Verizon Wireless Device Payment Plan.
  • The New Every Two program ended in January of 2011, yet Verizon Wireless has continued to allow customers to use expired credits. As of April 15 however, these credits will no longer be available.
  • Customers can still share an upgrade with another person on an account (if that customer is upgrading to a device within the same category.) Customers can still use a phone upgrade to purchase a new phone, however the option to transfer upgrades from non-phone devices will no longer be available.

Telenav Scout to add 3D buildings and crowd-sourced updates

Posted: 15 Apr 2013 10:32 AM PDT

scout_me_telenav_720w

Telenav, Inc., today announced a number of significant improvements to the Scout navigation application for Android. Expected to roll out later this year, both the free and the premium services will see 3D buildings and landmarks as well as new traffic tools.

The 3D building feature will be offered in many of the major markets across the United States and will provide drivers with a more dynamic and realistic approximation of surroundings. The 3D data is optimized and stored locally on the handset and will be automatically downloaded with each route.

Over on the traffic front, users will soon have the ability to provide real-time information such as accidents, hazards, traffic, and police presence. This crowd-sourced data will be folded into Telenav’s larger database and give drivers a more accurate route, offering alternatives where needed.

In addition to the crowd-sourced information, Telenav will also improve the experience by updating routes halfway through to give at-a-glance looks at traffic up to 15 miles ahead. Using the familiar red, yellow, and green color scheme, this information can be accessed without leaving the screen and without distracting the driver.

Look for the updated features in Scout later this year.

Scout for Phones to Feature 3D Buildings and Crowd-Sourced Traffic Incident Reporting
Updates will be added to free, personalized GPS navigation app later this year

Sunnyvale, Calif. — April 15, 2013 — Telenav®, Inc. (NASDAQ: TNAV), the leader in personalized navigation, announced today that it will add major updates to its free Scout for Phones personalized GPS navigation apps by end of year, including 3D buildings and landmarks along with several significant improvements to its traffic content and user interface. New features will be available in Scout for iPhone and Scout for Android.

3D Buildings and Landmarks
Developed using screen space ambient occlusion (SSAO), a rendering technique that is used primarily in the gaming industry to create high frame rate 3D realistic graphics, Scout will add 3D buildings and landmarks in many major metropolitan cities across the U.S. As drivers near upcoming turns, Scout will dynamically change navigation views to show relevant nearby buildings and landmarks to give drivers a better feel for their surroundings and assist with upcoming maneuvers. The new 3D data will be optimized and locally cached so that they are automatically downloaded with each route and condensed to very small file sizes.

Our primary goal in adding 3D integration into Scout for Phones is to help drivers navigate unfamiliar areas," said Ryan Peterson, director of product management, traffic and navigation at Telenav. "With that goal in mind, we are focusing on ease of use, realistic but subtle graphics, and intuitive views. It's about providing drivers with additional context on the road so they can better navigate their surroundings with just a quick glance."

Major Traffic Improvements and Updates
Telenav will also incorporate major updates to traffic information and capabilities to Scout for Phones later this year. For example, users will have the ability to easily report incident information as they witness it. Drivers will be able to report situations such as accidents, road hazards, traffic jams and police presence with just a couple of taps on the phone. Scout will then automatically integrate the crowd-sourced information into its traffic and congestion database so other Scout users in that area will be prompted to avoid these lengthy delays or other traffic incidents.

Beyond integrating more crowd-sourced information from its Scout users, Telenav will also expand its overall traffic coverage by five times through the addition of traffic and congestion information for arterial roadways, providing Scout drivers with more comprehensive traffic information for their daily routes.

Scout for Phones' user interface will also improve in updating drivers on upcoming traffic and alternate routes. While en route, Scout will provide more information on alternate routes based on traffic without drivers having to touch the phone or change to another screen. As they become available, Scout will proactively display faster alternate route options at the bottom of the navigation screen and a driver can choose to ignore or select the new route.

Scout will also update mid-route so drivers will be able to see traffic flow information for longer portions of their trip. For example, drivers may be able to see if traffic is at a red, yellow or green status for up to 15 miles ahead without changing screens. In addition, Telenav will transition Scout for iPhone to include a vector-based traffic display so that the images and navigation are displayed quicker, sharper and more fluid to optimize the user experience for drivers on the road.

With more than 50 percent of American workers spending at least 20 minutes getting to work each day*, traffic is a daily grind for a lot of people," said Peterson. "We are constantly looking for ways to improve our traffic data and how it's shared in the app. We hope to help alleviate some of the stress of daily traffic for our customers by implementing these updates this year."

3D building and landmark integration and updates to traffic features will be added to the free and premium versions of Scout for Phones by the end of the year.

Alleged hardware details leaked for Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 models

Posted: 15 Apr 2013 10:18 AM PDT

Hope you’re not sick of hearing about Samsung yet, because we read some interesting news from the techie site technobuffalo.com this morning that we want to share with you. All of us have been hearing rumors that Samsung is working on two new devices which will hopefully be (officially) announced any day now: The Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 and the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0. According to their source Techblog, specs have been released for both tablets, and we thought you may want to know what they are.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 will run on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and will be powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU with just 1GB of RAM. (That could be a problem because the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is said to have 2 gigs of memory.) New rumors say it will have a resolution of just 1280 x 800 pixels, much different from the earlier reports of a 2560 x 1600 display.

The Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 will also supposedly have 16GB of internal memory, connectivity options such as Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, a standard microUSB port, and depending on the version, HSPA or LTE. It will have a 7,000 mAh battery, and the camera will include a 3 megapixel main camera in the back and a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera for chat.

Since this is the larger of the two upcoming tablets, it will measure 256.7 x 175.3 x 8.7 mm and weigh just 533g. That will make it both thinner and lighter than the current Galaxy Note 10.1.

Samsung Galaxy 3 8.0

As far as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 goes, we heard that it will feature the same CPU as the 10.0. The 8 in. display will have a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and will include Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Connectivity options and the cameras are the same as on the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, but the battery has been shrunk to 4,500 mAh. If the rumors are true, the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 will be tiny at just 6.95mm, and will weigh 330g. This is about the same as the Galaxy Note 8.0.

possible galaxy tab 10

According to the source, the 3G versions of the Galaxy Tab 3 devices are expected to come out in May, and the 4G tablets will go on sale in June or July. There is still no word on pricing. A very blurry picture of a possible 10.1 or 8.0 device was leaked as well as the specs (see above.) Check it out and tell us what you think!

Pantech flagship Vega Iron rumored to take on Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One

Posted: 15 Apr 2013 07:17 AM PDT

leak-Pantech-Vega-Iron

Pantech, a handset maker known for its affordable and powerful Android alternatives, looks to be ready for another fight. According to recent rumors, a Pantech Vega Iron is slated to arrive in a few weeks and will be taking the fight to Samsung, HTC, and anyone else.

Reportedly, the phone will feature a 5-inch 1920x1080p HD display, 2GB RAM, a 1.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, 13-megapixel rear camera, and 2150mAh battery. Additional details are said to include a bezel-less display and “oblong” design.

Rumored to arrive on April 18, it’s unclear whether this will be coming to the United States. Our gut tells us that we might expect to see it come to at least one carrier; AT&T seems the likely choice.

Samsung to employ new design for Galaxy Note 3?

Posted: 15 Apr 2013 07:10 AM PDT

Over the weekend we learned a juicy bit of information coming from one of SamMobile’s insiders. According to rumors, Samsung is getting a little nervous after seeing the success of the HTC One, and is unsure if their build quality and design of their mobile devices is good enough for their users.

If you remember, the HTC One is made completely from aluminium, something all Samsung fan have said they would like to see. When the Galaxy S4 was introduced, people started to point the finger at Samsung for using plastic again instead of aluminium or metal. Now let’s clear up the fact that Samsung isn't worried at all about the software; they believe their software is far superior than what runs on HTC devices. In their minds, what could be better than Samsung’s simple Nature UX interface?

Now back to the issue. According to SamMobile’s insider, Samsung is worried about build quality and they plan on changing things around a bit on their next flagship device. It has been said that the Galaxy Note 3 will not use the same design guidelines of the Galaxy S4. The material choice for the Galaxy Note 3 is still unclear however. Will Samsung listen to their fans and turn to metal? They were going to try it with the Galaxy S4 as it was very popular internally, but Samsung couldn’t produce it on time (due to deadlines) so it was trashed. Maybe this time they feel a little more prepared. There is still time for Samsung to get everything geared up and produce a device using something other than plastic. As usual nothing has been confirmed, so as soon as we hear about any new changes in regards to the Galaxy Note 3 we will make sure to keep you informed.

Element Case GS3 Atom review

Posted: 15 Apr 2013 06:00 AM PDT

Atom_SamsungS3_productpage-sliced_01Element Case is widely known for making ruggedized accessories, and the Atom is no different. I had the chance to review this Galaxy S3 case, and I was duly impressed. The Atom’s main body is made of TPU material, but there are two distinct features that really set the Atom apart from other cases.

IMG_20130413_135947First, EC has added a carbon fiber back plate, much like the one seen on Motorola’s Droid Razr devices. This gives the case a sturdy, but not entirely rigid feel. I found that the case was very flexible, but always bounced back to its original shape no matter how much I bent it. For users that loved the appearance of the Droid Razr’s back plating, this case offers a similar appearance. It’s almost a fancy rugged look, and it’s sure to appeal to lots of GS3 owners.

IMG_20130413_135723The other outstanding feature can be found in the reinforced corners. Element Case took the liberty of beefing up all four corners to give more drop protection. Upon first glance, it looks a bit awkward and clunky. But after using the case long enough, they weren’t even noticeable. It is nice to have that extra little oomph of protection, especially considering the general clumsiness a lot of users face in day-to-day use.

IMG_20130413_135546The Atom’s charging and headphone cutouts are precise and gave me no issues at all, which is always positive in a case. I did, however, find an issue with the volume and power buttons. Since it’s primarily a protective case, tough button covers are expected. Still, a bit more give in the buttons would have been nice. The power button is especially hard to press with the case on, and I found myself frustratingly pressing it several times just to lock or unlock my device. The volume rocker was not quite as stiff, at least once I learned that there is more give in the middle of the button.

The case itself is very light and fits onto the GS3 like a glove. It’s fairly easy to slip on and off, although it does stay on the device firmly. I tried and failed to find an orientation that caused the device to slip out of the case, so EC did a very nice job form-fitting the Atom. One thing I did like was the ability to still see the chrome-colored plastic trim of the GS3 with the case on. It’s not much, but just enough to give the user reassurance that this case isn’t swallowing their phone whole.

IMG_20130413_135309It feels comfortable in the hand, and adds little weight to the device. I did find it to be a bit slippery, but the beefy corners help take care of that when the case is held properly. The carbon fiber back itself is fairly slick, although the TPU material covers the edges of the phone where the user’s hand actually grips it.

Overall, the Atom provides users with a substantial amount of protection, high quality look and feel, and that carbon fiber back that so many people love. It withstood several accidental drops from around 3-4 feet, and just kept trucking. I’d recommend this case to any GS3 user that’s looking for a simple, strong case with a quality appearance. Although the power and volume buttons gave me a bit of trouble, the case itself was marvelous.

Important Features

  • High impact resistant TPU Body
  • Genuine Carbon Fiber backing
  • Reinforced corners
  • Ergonomic shape for a positive grip
  • Integrated button design

What We Liked

  • Sturdy, great construction, but still flexible
  • Beefed-up corners offer great drop protection
  • Exudes a premium feel
  • Carbon fiber back is a nice touch
  • Easy to get on and off device

Room for Improvement

  • Power & volume buttons were a bit too hard to press
  • More color options would be nice

Where to Buy:

You can grab an Atom for your GS3 from Element Case for $44.95. Sadly, it only comes in black at the moment. Element Case also offers a few other GS3 cases, including a very sleek wallet flip case.

Everything.me Launcher: Personalize your homescreen on the fly, depending on what you’re interested in

Posted: 15 Apr 2013 05:00 AM PDT

Let’s face it: the Android homescreen can get stale, boring – just plain old “meh”. Not because of anything Google did wrong, of course, but there are those users like myself who constantly want to see their setups change, stay fresh. Enter “Everything.me”.

This homescreen replacement app is pretty cool. Everything.me aims to change your homescreen experience from one of an all-around, static view of what you need to know about everything, and morph it into everything you need to know about a single thing – while keeping it easy to change up. A transition from a “jack of all trades” launcher experience to a “master of one” experience, if you will.

If you want to know everything there is to know about a band, perhaps – say, “Thank You Scientist” (Was that a shameless plug?), all you have to do is hit the search bar up top, and enter / say the band name. Within seconds, your homescreen has changed. Now, not only has your background changed to match your search, but you’re seeing links to official pages, youtube videos, spotify searches for your band, lyrics, wikipedia pages, and more. Much more. Interested in sushi? Search it. Dog whistles? You got it. Indie tap dancing? Your favorite, widely-unknown beer? Winston Churchill? Search it, and you’re knee-deep.

Check out the video below for a full-on look at how it works, and be sure to hit the download links below to try it out for yourself. You can also check out their homepage here.

Leaked document shows Galaxy S4 may come to AT&T April 26, followed by T-Mobile and Verizon

Posted: 15 Apr 2013 04:30 AM PDT

While we’re still in the official dark about the release dates on the Samsung Galaxy S4, a newly leaked document from Staples may hold some information. According to the paper, leaked to Engadget, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is set to tentatively be released on AT&T on April 26, T-Mobile on May 1, and Verizon on May 30.

Notably missing from the sheet is two things: a mention of a Sprint variant, as well as any sort of pricing information. This doesn’t mean that Sprint won’t be seeing the S4 – in fact, this doesn’t even mean that these are the official dates – so, we shouldn’t assume the worst in that arena.

Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments.
