Galaxy S4 gets stripped down, looks easy to fix – mostly

Posted: 28 Apr 2013 11:43 AM PDT

The folks over at iFixIt have gotten their new Galaxy S4, and what have they done with it? Taken it apart, of course… like they always do. From what they gathered, everything is easy enough to replace, sans the front glass and panel. Here’s a rundown:

  • Samsung Galaxy S4 Reparability Score: 8 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair)
  • The battery can be replaced in seconds, without any tools.
  • Very easy to open and access internal components.
  • There are only 11 screws in the entire device, all standard Phillips #0 (no proprietary or security sizes).
  • Most of the smaller components are modular and can be replaced individually, but several of them are adhered in place, increasing replacement difficulty.
  • The glass is fused to both the display and the display frame, increasing repair costs.
  • You’ll have to go through the entire phone in order to replace the front panel, since everything is built into the back of it.

Qualcomm-based Samsung Galaxy S4 models now have root

Posted: 28 Apr 2013 11:35 AM PDT

If you’re a hacker / cracker / modder / rooter, then you’ll be interested in hearing this. Now that AT&T and Sprint are carrying the Samsung Galaxy S4, XDA user djrbliss has come up with a root method for the S4 on these carriers. The mod only works on Qualcomm-based S4′s. The tool, which was initially used for Motorola devices, has been reported to work flawlessly on these phone models.

Be sure to hit up the source below for instructions and full details. As always, AG is not held responsible for any damage to your device, software, hardware, or personal nightlife. If you give this a shot, let us know how it goes in the comments.

Samsung Galaxy S4 now available through sprint and AT&T

Posted: 28 Apr 2013 11:27 AM PDT

Everybody’s been talking about it, and now it’s time to get it – for some. Samsung’s highly anticipated Galaxy S4 is now available on Sprint and AT&T. The phone comes in either “black mist” or “white frost” via both carriers, as well as 16GB of internal storage.

When it comes to pricing, however, there will be a difference. With AT&T, if your order is placed online, you can get the S4 for $199 on a new contract, or $639 if you have commitment issues (off-contract). Sprint, however, rolls in a little cheaper, offering it for $149 on-contract for new customers who bring their own number, but more expensive for existing customers at $249. Sprint is also selling the phone off-contract for $599.

Have you picked one up? Be sure to let us know if you have, and hit up the links below to check them out per carrier.
