Google adds nutrition info cards to Google Now

Posted: 31 May 2013 07:37 AM PDT

Whether you’re trying to lose some weight for the beach months, or have some dietary restrictions, or just plain trying to eat healthier, nutritional information is your friend when it comes to being healthy. Google has now added cards to Google Now to give nutrition information, and it’s pretty cool.

Doing a search in Now of “how many carbs are in popcorn” or “how many calories are in an orange” will give you a card telling you how many calories or carbs you’re looking at in your food, along with some dropdown menus to customize serving sizes and specific types of food.

This is yet another example of how Google is trying to integrate everything users need into their ecosphere. As one commenter mentions, “ you know what the next step will be? Soon we won’t even have to type the question in. Just take a picture of the food item and it’ll just pop up the information.” Anyone here disagree that that would be awesome? As a type 1 diabetic, I have to keep track of every gram of carbs I take in, and Google just made my life a little easier for that.

The rollout is in English only for now, and is being rolled out a little bit at a time. I personally tried it, but didn’t get the card, nor did Google have an update in the Play Store. However, Google says it should be completely in place in the next 10 days.

HTC One Nexus Edition to see Android 4.3 soon after release, report claims

Posted: 31 May 2013 07:20 AM PDT

HTC_One_Google-FEATURED

The HTC One Nexus Edition, which arrives on June 26, will pick up an Android 4.3 update in the weeks following its release. A tweet from oft-accurate HTC ROM developer @llabTooFeR tells us that the yet-announced version of Android must be nearing.

Google has yet to formally make any announcements in regards to an Android 4.3 update; we suspect there won’t be much noise when it debuts. Expected to be part of the Jelly Bean family it’s likely a handful of minor updates and tweaks to play nice with a widening base of devices.

In a bit of related news, a list of HTC models purported to receive Android 4.3 updates leaked online yesterday. Although the HTC One Nexus Edition was not on the list a number of other models are slated to see the update in Q4. Keep in mind this is unconfirmed stuff until HTC makes an announcement.

HTC ‘examining’ options to provide stock Android to existing HTC One devices

So you recently bought an HTC One and found yourself wishing it had a stock Android experience. Sure, the HTC Sense 5 UI is quite great, but you’re still a purist at heart. Unfortunately you’re beyond the time frame for returning the device and this new HTC One Nexus Experience has you a little worked up.  What to do? According to The Verge, these problems may soon come to pass.

HTC is reportedly “examining” options for providing a stock Android experience for those who bought the first generation of the flagship phone.

…currently “examining the best way to support early adopters of the One” that may prefer the stock Android experience over Sense, perhaps by way of an AOSP ROM. The company isn’t providing specifics on that front just yet. – The Verge ,http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/30/4379796/htc-one-google-edition-announced-stock-android

Now, this doesn’t mean it is a foregone conclusion and that you’ll be able to tap a button to remove Sense from the device. It’s likely more complicated than this and could still be a ways off. With that said, we are extremely happy to hear that HTC is even considering this as an option.

How do you feel about this? Would you consider flashing a stock Android experience or removing the Sense features from your HTC One? Do you even know what the differences would be?  I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Is that a new Nexus 7 in the Google Maps video?

Posted: 31 May 2013 06:14 AM PDT

nexus7_google_maps_720_a

A Google Maps video which went live just a few short days ago may provide our first glimpse at the next Nexus 7 tablet. You’ll notice around the :50 mark that an unknown tablet makes a fleeting appearance. While it definitely could be the next-generation Nexus 7 tablet, it could also be a generic placeholder device.

Given this is an official Google video we’re inclined this is a legit tablet and possibly the Nexus 7. And, assuming this is the real deal, we might infer that we might soon see this hit retail channels. Google is rumored to release a faster, higher resolution version of the popular 7-inch tablet in the near term.

Looking a bit like a stretched out Nexus One, we kind like the rounded edges and soft bevel. What about you?

UPDATE: As one of our Twitter followers points out, this could be a ZTE tablet. A quick glance at the ZTE Optik images and we suspect they could be right!  Thanks, iSaifu!
