(Photo credit TechCrunch) It’s been a long time coming, but the moment is finally here folks— Blackberry Messenger is officially on the way to Android devices! Announced at the Blackberry Live 2013 event, Blackberry CEO Thorsten Heins confirmed “the BB10 platform is so strong and the response has been so good that the time is right for BBM to become an independent mobile messaging platform“. As a result, the mobile giant will make BBM as a cross-platform messaging app that will be available for Android (and iOS-based) devices. Huzzah! So now that one of the most popular and successful messaging apps is now available, it’s now just a matter of time before we see BBM hit the Play Store and on devices everywhere.

Oh CyanogenMod, let us count the ways we love thee. If we were to actually count, 5 million and change would probably be your stopping point— but thankfully we don’t have to count because CyanogenMod has done it for us. Using the latest report from the CyanogenMod statistics feature, the total number of installs has climbed to 5,071,645. What is especially interesting is the number of official installs of 1,881,796 v.s. 3,189,849 unofficial installs. There is a slight skew there, but it makes sense if you think about it. For example, I remember my Epic 4G Touch or Sprint S II doesn’t have an officially supported CyanogenMod ROM, but there are a few unofficial ones floating around out there. CyanogenMod has gone through many changes during its time and this number represents their dedication to their fans and the Android community. My hat is off to the CyanogenMod team, congratulations and excellent job. Not to leave out the fans, because they deserve congratulations too. This accomplishment wouldn’t be achieved if it wasn’t for their love of CyanogenMod and their dedication to the ROM. Do you use CyanogenMod as your daily driver? It’s been a while since NVIDIA announced its game-changing Project SHIELD handheld gaming system, but the wait is finally over gang as NVIDIA is finally taking pre-orders will begin as early as next week, May 20th. In case you’ve forgotten about this puppy— the Jelly Bean-powered handheld gaming system features a boatload of sweet features including the killer Tegra 4 chip + 2 gigs of RAM, a 5-inch 720p retinal multi-touch display, custom bass reflex tuned port audio system and a full-fledged control pad. Oh and for those of you that want to stream the sweet gaming content to a larger display, SHIELD will also give you the power to wirelessly access your NVIDIA GeForce GTX GPU-powered computer from the comfort of your couch with GeForce game streaming– while NVIDIA promises to bring PC streaming to SHIELD devices at a later date. Speaking of games, it’s looking like there will certainly be a nice lineup of titles for gamers to choose from once SHIELD is finally available. Among the games that will be headed to TegraZone are Broken Age, Costume Quest, Flyhunter: Origins, Skiing Fred and Chuck’s Challenge. Naturally, there will be more titles released as time moves forward and all that good stuff. And now for the important deets— pricing and availability. As mentioned earlier, the device will be available for pre-order from Newegg, Gamestop, Micro Center and Canada Computers on May 20th, while devices will ship around sometime in June. Additionally, SHIELD will cost $349, so it won’t break the bank too much.

| Smartphone sales in Q1 2013 great for Android, amasses whopping 75% of market share Posted: 14 May 2013 07:00 AM PDT
Android and iOS have been neck and neck battling for the title of “leading smartphone OS” for years now, but this month’s numbers don’t suggest a tight competition whatsoever. In the first quarter of 2013, Android-powered smartphones accounted for about 75% of all smartphones sold in this time-frame. Apple’s iOS came far behind, selling only 18.2% worth of the market share. Surprisingly the failing RIM (Blackberry) was able to outsell Microsoft’s Windows 8 Phones by 0.1%. It isn’t a big difference, but that’s definitely saying something about Microsoft’s success in the smartphone market. Perhaps the most interesting of all this is that Android’s flagship for the year, the Samsung Galaxy S 4 hasn’t even been released yet. Android’s dominance over the market is expected to surpass that of 75% in Q2 2013. Of course quarter-based numbers need to be taken with a grain of salt, because timing is indeed everything. Because a new iPhone hasn’t been released since last September and Androids are released with the newest technology seemingly every week, it is pretty much expected that Android rules the market. It’ll definitely be interesting to see these market share numbers following the release of the highly anticipated iPhone 5S or iPhone 6. Source: Gartner

There’s no doubt the Google Glass headset is one unique and potentially revolutionary device, but it appears it’s about to get something really special— facial recognition technology thanks to an app called MedRef. Using special facial recognition software, MedRef allows hospital employees to easily access patient records and can actually allow medical workers to keep a log of their patient with all sorts of info and notes to help make things easier. The app works in a simple and straightforward way really— it simply takes advantage of Google Glass timeline cards that are managed through voice commands, giving medical employees to do things like ”Set Patient” or “Add Note”. | Samsung Galaxy Note III to ship with a 6-inch, non-flexible glass OLED display Posted: 14 May 2013 06:16 AM PDT
While a handful of rumors regarding the hotly anticipated Samsung Galaxy Note III have been floating around the internet, the most speculation has been given to the device’s screen. Early rumors predicted that we’d see Samsung’s first flexible display, but with delays getting those to market it looks like that will not be the case. A report by an investment firm in South Korea says that the display on the Note III will be a 6-inch, non-flexible AMOLED screen, debunking other rumors that Samsung may introduce the world’s first plastic OLED display. In the report it is speculated that Samsung is not ready to mass produce flexible OLED displays and are currently only capable of manufacturing 24,000 screens a month. LG, who had also hinted at a flexible device by year’s end, is reportedly also having problems mass-producing their flexible display. Aside from the display, the Note III is rumored to have an Exynos Octa-core processor clocked at 2GHz for the A15 processor and 1.7GHz for the A7 processor, 3 GB of RAM, and runs Android 4.2.2. It is likely to be revealed at IFA 2013 in Berlin with a possible launch in the third quarter of this year. Source: OLED-Display

| Samsung Galaxy S 4 Mini specs leak, will feature high-powered Exynos 5210 chip Posted: 14 May 2013 06:12 AM PDT
Yesterday we showed you some leaked pictures of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 Mini, due for release at some point this month. We now have some more information on the device, as we now know that it will be run by the Exynos 5210 chip. This chip is a big.LITTLE architecture that combines the power-efficient Cortex A7 with the performance-driven Cortex A15. The leaked spreadsheet shows this information, which has been confirmed by Samsung, as well as some other specs about the phone that we already knew about. The phone should come with a 4.3-inch qHD display, and RAM will most likely depend on the market— 4G markets will most likely get 2GB, while 3G markets will most likely get 1GB. Some surprising information included on the spreadsheet is that it will launch with 32GB of internal storage— perhaps this is Samsung’s apology for the internal storage debacle with the Galaxy S 4. The spreadsheet also mentions that the Galaxy S 4 Mini will ship with Android 4.0 ICS on board, which is a bit confusing, considering the Galaxy S 4 is set to ship with 4.2. TuneIn Radio is a popular app internet radio streaming. It features over 70,000 different stations that stream anything from pop music to talk shows, as well as tons of podcasts. | Notion Ink brings okay specs and an interesting display tweak with the Adam II Posted: 13 May 2013 07:37 PM PDT
Hey do you folks remember when Notion Ink told us about their newest tablet the Adam II? Do you also remember when we saw a sneak peak of that same tablet 11 months later? Well fast forward a year and four months later and it appears that the Adam II is ready to ship. Finally right? Back when it first debuted it was to sport top of the line specs however as time progressed those specs have become a little bit outdated. They’re as follows:
The hardware will at least run the most current version of Android (at least for now). It comes with a nice set of peripheral ports like HDMI and a microSD slot expandable up to 32GB. Even with that though, the most interesting feature will be the edge display that is supposed to mimic the spine of a book. With that display one will be able to see notifications and contextual data. Notion Ink has been known to entice with fancy features only to lose steam in the end. The edge display is interesting, but it may not be enough to hold the attention of many. Right now it’s only slated to be released in India but when it comes to when; your guess is as good as mine. We’ll let you know when we find out.
