Release candidates for CyanogenMod 10.1.0 start making their way to select devices

Posted: 08 May 2013 01:40 PM PDT

CyanogenMod-9-635x349

CyanogenMod has announced they have release candidates ready for a few select devices. OK so the word few isn’t really accurate,  40 is the actual number and the list is impressive. For those of you who don’t know what CyanogenMod or CM 10.1 is, it is a custom ROM for select Android devices, CM 10.1 is the latest from the CyanogenMod crew and it is based on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean source code.

The devices listed for rc1 consideration is a who’s-who of current and former top end devices. The current lineup of Nexus phones and tablets are there, as well as the Nexus Q for those who happen to own one. The international HTC One X is there as well, and a few U.S. variants of the Samsung Galaxy S III.

The list is too big for me to run through all of them, so click on the source and see if your device is listed. If not, be patient it may make the list sooner or later.

Apple wants source code records in Samsung trial and looks in Google’s direction in the process

Posted: 08 May 2013 01:25 PM PDT

google-vs-apple

Apple is trying to bring Google into their lawsuit with Samsung in a roundabout way. Apple wants a judge to ask Google to turn over documents related to the Android OS. Apple argues that by having a judge force Google to turn over the documents, it will help prove their case of Samsung’s alleged infringement. Android runs in all of Samsung’s devices that Apple has a problem with and Apple argues that Android “provides much of the accused functionality“.

A lawyer for Apple claims that Google is not doing a full search for said documents, but the lawyer representing Samsung in this case and who also represents Google as well, said that this was part of Apple’s “strategic decision… to keep Google off the complaint” in this case. By not listing Google as part of the complaint, Google is not entitled to the same reciprocal discovery process as Apple and Samsung. If a judge orders this evidence to be turned over Apple, they could possibly be handed something they could use to try and come after Google, that they would not have got without a judges order.

This is the second trial for Samsung and Apple. The first one didn’t go as well as Samsung had hopped, having received a judgment of $1.05 billion which was later reduced to $639.4 million by the same judge, who also order a new trial. As always we will keep an eye on any developments in this case and bring them to you as soon as we hear them.

T-Mobile revenues dip, but customer base growing

T-Mobile US released highlights of their 2013 first quarter financial results showing positive growth in their customer base. For the first time since 2009, the carrier experienced positive customer net additions. This was a result of continued strength in prepaid net additions, the seventh consecutive quarter of growth, combined with a significant improvement in postpaid losses. Those losses were down to 199,000, a 61% improvement compared to the prior year when that number was in the 500,000+ range. Overall, T-Mobile added 579,000 customers and now claims 34 million customers. The growth in customers was attributed mainly to the introduction of their new “Simple Choice” Un-carrier plans and the addition of the iPhone to their portfolio.

Thanks to the improvement in the customer base, T-Mobile ended the quarter with earnings of $1.2 billion and a margin of 29%. That was 12% higher compared to the fourth quarter of 2012. This performance was achieved even though total revenue was down 7.1% year to year. T-Mobile President and CEO John Legere said, “Our first quarter operating metrics and financial results are showing positive impact from the changes we began making in the fourth quarter. Branded customer net additions turned positive for the first time since the first quarter of 2009 and our postpaid business has demonstrated significant improvement…We ended the quarter with strong operational momentum, which is continuing into the second quarter, driven by the successful launch of our Un-carrier ‘Simple Choice’ service plan and the introduction of the iPhone into our device line-up. Things only get more exciting from here, having brought T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS together to create the wireless industry’s value leader and premier challenger."

T-Mobile reported capital expenditures of $1.1 billion for the first quarter as they continue the buildout of their 4G LTE network. Seven metropolitan locations were announced on March 26th and T-Mobile expects they will cover 200 million people by the end of 2013. Thus far 16,000 cell sites have been upgraded and modernized as part of T-Mobile’s Network Modernization program.

Featured Android Game Review: Boulder Dash XL [Brain & Puzzle]

Posted: 08 May 2013 08:55 AM PDT

Boulder_Dash_XL_Spash_Banner

HeroCraft has done it again. Fans of the 80s classic Boulder Dash will want to take a look at this one because it not only has the original version, but a new updated version with better graphics and gameplay. Boulder Dash XL was co-developed with First Star Software and is the same exact game that’s available on both the Xbox 360 and PC. You can play either Rockford or Crystal as you dig through caves to collect diamonds within the time limit.

Boulder Dash XL gives you 100 caves to explore that delivers all kinds of obstacles and enemies such as falling boulders, trap doors, magic walls, Amoebas, Wild Walkers, Fuzzy Flies, Fuzzy Walkers, Radical Radiators, and so much more. You get a telescopic arm to move large boulders as well as dynamite for bigger jobs. Control options are a plenty. You can choose touch/swiping or an on screen D-pad. You can place the D-pad on the right or left side or you can split them.

The retro mode will give you the original 8-bit 1984 hit and the Arcade mode will give you the updated version with better graphics. If that’s not enough, there are three additional modes: Score Attack, Puzzle Mode, and Zen Mode. In Score Attack, it’s your job to get as many points as possible in specially designed caves within the time limit. The exit will open early and if you make your way back before time runs out, you will be rewarded, so play your strategy accordingly. Puzzle mode has no time limits. It’s just a matter of finding a way to get all the diamonds for each level.

You are graded with the 3 star system like many other games. Get one star for completing the cave, two stars for collecting 50% or more of the diamonds, and three stars for getting at least 90%. Grabbing one star will unlock the next cave, but will you be satisfied?

Boulder Dash XL is the perfect combination of retro and 21st century fun. It costs $2.99 and there are no in-app purchases to bother with unless you want to unlock caves before solving the previous ones, but who wants to do that? Hit one of the download links to get started and as always, let me know what you think.

Vivo announces high-end, pricey phablet coming in late May

Posted: 08 May 2013 08:33 AM PDT

As the size of smartphones continues to increase, so does the demand for phablets. Vivo, a Chinese manufacturer, announced yesterday that it plans to release the Vivo Play, a phablet with a 5.7-inch screen and a 1080p display. It’ll also be fully loaded with a quad-core Snapdragon 600 chipset; but unlike many of Vivo’s competitors, the asking price for one of these phones is likely to be 2,998 yuan— that’s $490 USD.

It’s pretty expensive, but it just might be worth it considering what you’re getting for your money. The Vivo Play’s Snapdragon 600 chipset is the same one that’s in the HTC One, clocked at 1.7GHz with 2GB of RAM. It’ll also feature “Fun-touch” UI rather than leave the job to stock Android. This UI has been said to be similar to the flat-structure of iOS. The 13MP back-facing camera has an F/2.2 aperture lens, and the 5MP front-facing camera has an 88° FoV. At 7.99mm thick, the Vivo Play weights 187g and is packed with a 3,400mAh battery. According to rumors, the phone will also feature some sensing capabilities similar to the Galaxy S 4.

The phablet will go on sale later this month in two colors: black and white, along with two options for built-in memory: 16GB or 32GB. It’ll only be available in China, but you should be able to grab one on eBay if you’re willing to pay the price.

AT&T offers the HTC First smartphone for under a buck

Posted: 08 May 2013 08:16 AM PDT

HTC First

Fancy the newly-released HTC First smartphone with that unique Facebook Home launcher, but didn’t want to pay the $100 asking price from AT&T? Well you’re in luck as AT&T has announced a special promotion where it is offering the landmark device for a whopping 99¢ for those of you who choose to sign your lives’ away to Ma Bell for the next two years. Yes you read that right— the device is not even going to cost customers a buck for new or existing customers who sign up for the device on-contract! Even more astounding is AT&T also chose to reduce the outright price of the device from $450 to a not-too-shabby $350. So all of a sudden, the 1.5GHz Snapdragon dual-core processor, sexy 720p display and a nearly-stock build of Android 4.1.2 under Facebook Home looks even more attractive than ever before.

If you’re looking for a device for $350, then the First smartphone may very well be a solid alternative to say, the Nexus 4 smartphone for many customers– especially if they are interested in a unique Facebook experience. Hit the source link to grab more details.
