Parkersburg, West Virginia is Verizon’s 500th LTE market

parkersburg

Verizon’s LTE market has officially hit its 500th stop in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Parkersburg is the third largest city in West Virginia with a population of 31,000 people.

Parkersburg marks a milestone that Verizon's 4G LTE network build out is basically complete, with their LTE network covering over 99% of their 3G network. Available to 298 million people nationwide, more than 95% of the population has access to Verizon’s 4G LTE network.

To celebrate the milestone, Verizon held a city-wide scavenger hunt and donated $50,000 in grants to local domestic violence prevention agencies. Afterwards guests at the event were treated to a seminar on what 4G LTE means to residents, hosted by Verizon Region President Mark Frazier and local elected official Sen. David Nohe.

Stock camera application from Galaxy S 4 and HTC One Google Play Editions leaks

Posted: 27 Jun 2013 08:18 AM PDT

google-editions-kamera-app

It looks as though the Google Editions of the Galaxy S 4 and HTC One will have an updated camera interface to that of the current stock Android phones on the market. The application features quick access to HDR when you press and hold on the screen, and the volume rocker can be used as a shutter key. “More options” presents all of the advanced options in the same semi-circle (seen above).

Good news is that if you’d like to try out the new camera for yourself, (complete with panorama features if your device doesn’t have it) the APK is available from the source link below. Just remember to disable your default camera first.

FingerQ case is designed to protect your device and the information inside using fingerprint-scanning technology

Posted: 27 Jun 2013 08:13 AM PDT

fingerq_s3case

Phone cases are a dime a dozen and range from bulletproof to flimsy decoration, and everything in between. Until now these cases only protected your physical phone, and not the valuable information stored inside.  Hong Kong company FingerQ has decided to fill that gap, releasing cases for many popular phones that feature a small fingerprint scanner on the back, which pairs with a FingerQ app on your phone. The scanner works with your mobile OS’s built-in security (pattern lock, face unlock, etc) for a comprehensive security solution.

If thats not enough, each app on your device can be assigned a scan, allowing you to lock down apps that contain sensitive information, such as mobile banking applications. The FingerQ case also features a dedicated chat application, allowing for encrypted messages to be sent from one FingerQ user to another, requiring a scan before sending or viewing a new message.

The icing on the cake is that once paired, the FingerQ doesn’t work with another device, and removing it doesn’t disable its security features, rendering a stolen device useless to the thief. Users are able to set a security password to override the FingerQ’s features if necessary. The FingerQ will hit shelves sometime next month and will retail somewhere between $40 and $60.

Images of Sony device leaked, possibly upcoming ‘Honami’ flagship

Honami_2

The Brazilian site techtudo has leaked images of an upcoming Sony device, which they claim is the upcoming H2 Sony flagship, codenamed Honami. (The phone is the white device in between what looks like the Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia ZQ.)

The device actually looks very similar to the Xperia Z as they share the same OmniBalance design, but the Honami seems to have an infra-red sensor. The Honami also is believed to have a 20MP shooter and possibly a Snapdragon 800 chipset. We won’t have any formal information on the Honami for a while so we’ll keep you updated as any news comes in.

Yup… some Nexus 4 models have slightly different screen and no, it’s not an easy fix

Nexus_4_1_Million_Sales

In slightly startling news, it appears that the various Nexus 4 smartphones out there may have a significant difference with one another— and we’re not talking about the refreshed units with nipples either. The curious bunch at Phone Arena noticed that one Nexus 4 unit had a warmer display temperature than another unit. Naturally this raised some suspicion, so out of curiosity, the gang ran a bunch of tests and found that one Nexus 4 had an average color temp of 7100K, while the other had an average temp of 7900K— which more than confirmed the original suspicions. When asked about the differences between the Nexus 4 units, an LG rep confirmed “from time to time it becomes necessary or preferable to alter certain product specification if engineers and management feel the change improves the functionality or usability of the device.

Naturally, it should be hypothetically simple to correct this by issuing a simple software update in order to ensure all Nexus 4 units are on the same page, right? Not so fast folks— the same LG rep confirmed ”there is no easy way for normal users to access the setting level to be able to recalibrate the display” since “today's smartphones are configured a specific way to give average consumers a specific user experience.” Because of this, a software fix may not be the easiest solution for LG since it would be presumably difficult and especially costly.

So yeah, it sucks that owners of earlier models will have a slightly worse color temp, but fortunately, they do have a few color calibration apps that should help to correct the minor gaffe for some of you owners out there.

Galaxy Note III could sport an LCD panel in some markets

Posted: 27 Jun 2013 06:21 AM PDT

It seems as though Samsung is having a consistency problem. It all started with the Galaxy S III last year, in which they offered quad-core and dual-core versions. Now the Galaxy S 4 has quad-core and octa-core versions. It seems as though the Galaxy Note III is going to continue the trend, but this time it won’t be around the processor. It appears that about 10% of the production might sport LCD panels instead of Super AMOLED displays. The reason is simply production issues.

Word is that it will be Japanese vendor supplying the LCD panels, and since Samsung has an investment in Sharp, that’s a good place to start. This could also be one of the reasons why the rumored display size dropped from 5.9-inches to 5.7-inches.

The ‘glamor red’ HTC One is real and coming to the UK

Posted: 27 Jun 2013 05:55 AM PDT

htc_one_glamor_red

Do you remember back in February when a red edition of the HTC One showed up on HTC’s website? At the time, HTC said it was a mistake and removed it, but we knew it was only a matter of time until it would show up for real. Well HTC has officially announced the ‘glamor red’ edition of the HTC One, and Phones 4U in the UK just told us they will be carrying this special edition starting in mid-July. As to the U.S., no official word, but AT&T might be a good bet.

It does look cool, but I’m not sure I could live with it for 2 years though. What do you guys think? Hit the break for the presser.

THE HTC ONE® LAUNCHES IN GLAMOUR RED

LONDON, June 27, 2013 — HTC, a global leader in mobile innovation and design, today announces that the award-winning HTC One will be available in a distinctive, new colour. Available exclusively to customers of Phones 4u from mid-July, the new HTC One in Glamour Red packs the blistering performance and premium features that have garnered global acclaim since its launch earlier this year, into a body that makes a striking yet sophisticated statement.

Philip Blair, President of EMEA, HTC, commented, "We have always been committed to offering consumers the flexibility to share their personalities through their choice of mobile phone, whether through colour, customisation or features. The new HTC One in Glamour Red showcases the power of our flagship model in a colour that demands attention, whilst maintaining the high standards set for sophisticated design and build quality."

Sitting at the top of HTC's portfolio, the HTC One combines the latest in mobile innovation and design to offer the company's most powerful experience to date. BlinkFeed aggregates multiple feeds from selected news sources, social networks and other in-phone features like the calendar or HTC Sense TV to create a customisable, real-time stream of relevant information direct to the home screen. HTC revolutionised photography with the introduction of the UltraPixel camera, for superior images in low light, and HTC Zoe, allowing you to capture the moment, not just a split-second snapshot. BoomSound brings your music to life with front-facing speakers and Beats Audio™ optimisation, placing you at the heart of the action, whether listening to music, playing a game or watching a movie on the stunning, 4.7", Full HD screen.

Since its launch, the HTC One has attracted a host of editorial and industry awards which recognise its superior performance and benchmark design. Highlights include the GSMA's Global Mobile Award for Best New Mobile Device or Tablet at Mobile World Congress 2013 and Computex Taipei's Gold Medal in Design and Innovation.

Google Play Edition device boot animation and live wallpaper available for download

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 07:54 PM PDT

GooglePlayEditions-650x487

As expected, here’s the red/orange SunBeam live wallpaper and boot animation that’s found on the Google Play Edition of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 and HTC One. You do need to be rooted for the boot animation, and it can be flashed through your custom recovery. As to the Sunbeam wallpaper, you can install it like any other third-party APK, but some are reporting errors. If that’s the case for you, then you need to be rooted so you can push the file to /system/app. Links after the break!

Ouya quickly becoming a big hit for retailers

OUYA

With the Ouya console finally available via retailers, the console is quickly selling out at high rates. At $99, I’m not surprised the highly anticipated console is doing well. Companies such as Amazon and GameStop have already sold out of their supplies.

With mobile gaming becoming ever so popular and with the quality of these games increasing at an exponential rate, the Ouya team launched this console at a great time. Do you have or plan on grab this console? If you have one, how do you like it thus far?
