Well, the press event is just getting underway and, yet, T-Mobile’s press release has already hit the inbox. So, here’s what the Un-carrier is up to today. In short, it’s all about upgrading handsets, new handsets, and LTE expansion.

The biggest and best part of the announcement is about JUMP! program Want a new smartphone but don’t wanna pay full cost yet again? Simply pay $10 per month and you’re almost there. No $36 upgrade fee, no waiting for two years.  Just Upgrade My Phone?

Customers can upgrade to a new phone, financed through T-Mobile's Equipment Installment Program (EIP), twice every 12 months after they’ve been in the JUMP! program for six months. Got some leftover EIP payments?  They’re gone. Current customers can purchase new phones for the same upfront pricing as new customers, with device financing and Simple Choice Plan, a no-annual-service contract.

  • JUMP!: A radical new program that allows T-Mobile customers to upgrade their phones when they want, up to twice per year. The program also includes total protection against device malfunction, damage, loss or theft – all for just $10 per month.
  • Rapidly expanding 4G LTE network: T-Mobile's 4G LTE network now reaches 157 million people across the United States and is live in 116 metropolitan areas. T-Mobile remains on target to have nationwide 4G LTE network coverage by the end of the year, reaching 200 million people in more than 200 metropolitan markets.
  • Simple Choice Plan for All Families: Families can get four Simple Choice Plan lines with unlimited talk, text and Web and up to 500MB of high-speed data for only $100 per month (plus taxes & fees) — with no credit check and no annual service contract required.
  • Expanding 4G LTE device lineup: T-Mobile introduced pricing and availability for two new 4G LTE-capable devices, including the Xperia Z from Sony and the Nokia Lumia 925. In addition, T-Mobile is providing Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 users with an LTE software update.

Motorola rumored to be making a cheaper Nexus 4-like phone

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 08:59 AM PDT

According to the Spanish tech site ADSLZone, Motorola is making a less expensive phone in the spirit of the Nexus 4. Rumors concerning the American manufacturer’s plans say that the upcoming device will play host to high-end hardware like a quad-core processor, without the high-end price.

Despite a few unconfirmed specs, Motorola is looking to keep the phone priced very cheap. Since Google’s acquisition of Motorola, their thought was to produce quality phones within a price range people could afford. Other than the whispers of the possibility of a quad-core processor, reports are also suggesting that this device could come as an alternative to the Moto X phone, which is expected to be officially revealed in the near future.

Tell us, do you think Motorola is heading in the right direction with their phones, or do you prefer the likes of HTC and Samsung? Let us know in the comments below!

Droid Ultra tipped to arrive on August 8

A second leaked commercial treatment for an upcoming Droid smartphone has surfaced today, this time centered around the Droid Ultra. According to the storyboard and ad description, the handset will arrive on August 8. Presumably, the Droid Mini and Droid Maxx show up at the same time.

Details described in the commercial tell us that the phone will have Gorilla Glass and Kevlar coating, neither of which are a surprise. We’re curious about the whole “Hello, Moto” aspect; is this the always-listening mode or are we not shown a button tap.  You know, the whole “sequence shortened” stuff that is listed in tiny print.

Whatever the case, we’re less than a month away from the debut of at least one new Droid. Here’s hoping the commercial airs soon and we can pick through the clues. We’ll take a bunch of new leaks, too.

Upcoming Droid series poses for family portrait

So, how would you like to see how the upcoming Droid family of smartphones look next to one another? That’s exactly what @evleaks has for us today as the yet-announced trio of handsets are found standing shoulder to shoulder.

Assuming the scale is correct, the Droid Mini is just that, a small take on the Droid Maxx and Droid Ultra. Also, we might infer that the Ultra and Maxx are identical twins save for the extra battery life. Rumored to be up to 48 hours of “worry-free” juice, the Maxx is likely going to carry a $50 (or more) premium.

Given the influx of leaks and rumors we should be soon seeing some sort of official announcements from Motorola and/or Verizon.

Leaked Droid Maxx commercial treatment touts “48 hours of worry-free battery life”

A newly leaked storyboard/commercial treatment tells us that the upcoming Droid Maxx will have 48 hours of “worry-free” battery life. Yeah, that sounds crazy right? According to AndroidCentral  this will be one of Verizon’s next commercials after the device is actually announced.

Google’s Larry Page (and others) have been long talking about how today’s smartphones could do much better in terms of battery life. Heck, as nice as the Droid Razr Maxx HD is, it’s only offers 32 hours off of a single charge. In all seriousness, we don’t even know what we’d do with two days of battery.

Regardless of what the internal hardware is, the Droid Maxx angle will be all about the battery life — and rightfully so.

Offers app and new Google Maps app for Android make it even easier to save on purchases

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 08:06 AM PDT

Google seems to be making it easier than ever to save money. Today on their commerce blog, they mentioned that they have expanded the way users can discover offers to include browsing the web with a Google device, using their popular Offers app, or even through Google Maps. No more clipping coupons ladies and gents, when all you need to do is save the offer to your Google account and redeem it easily with your phone when you visit the store.

A new way you can find discounts or coupons while in a new area is in the latest Google Maps for Android app. When you use the app to search for a restaurant or store, you'll see a blue tag icon near the business name or next to its pin on the map if they have an offer available. All you need to do is swipe the place info sheet up to get more details on the business, and tap on the offer to use it immediately in-store (or save to your Google account to use later.)

Of course you can also find savings on what you’re searching for with offers on Google search ads as well. Simply click or tap the ‘Get offer’ button to save the offer and use it in stores. We also can’t forget the Google Offers app. Just like before, users can continue to find discounts on the Google Offers site, as well as in the Offers and Wallet apps.

With so many options, Google has really made it easy for users to find discounts and coupons for almost any purchase. So go for it people, check out the new Google Maps app, Offers app, or browse around on any Google device and start saving!

Looks like Amazon is thinking of all the new phones that are soon to come, as they have dropped the price of HTC's flagship phone to just $49.99 with a new two year contract though Sprint or AT&T. Currently the only color option available is silver. If you aren’t looking to purchase a new contract, there are other sale options as well. Have a look around!

If you were still hesitant to jump on the HTC bandwagon, now may be the time. Head on over to the Amazon Sprint or Amazon AT&T pages for more details. No word on how long this deal will last so hurry up and grab yours today!

Updated Google Maps comes to Android phones and tablets

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 07:18 AM PDT

google_maps_720

Google has updated the Google Maps application for Android phones and tablets with features such as enhanced searching and navigation. Faster and reportedly more intuitive, the new version is also tablet optimized.

While on the road, Google Maps will also alert you if a better route becomes available and reroute you to your destination faster. This feature is available only on Android and is coming soon to iOS.

Also included in the update, the Google Maps experience now offers better access to Google Offers, Reviews, and Zagat Scores.

It’s not all “new and improved” however as the Latitude and Check-in features have been pulled out. Of course, you’re using Google+ anyways and won’t skip a beat.

One important change you should know about is that Latitude and check-ins are no longer part of the new Google Maps app, and will be retired from older versions on August 9. We understand some of you still want to see your friends and family on a map, which is why we’ve added location sharing and check-ins to Google+ for Android (coming soon to iOS). More details about Latitude and check-in changes can be found in our help center.

What’s more, the ability to use offline maps is different than in past releases.  To enable the map to work with no data connection, simply enter "OK Maps" into the search box when viewing the area you want for later.  To learn more about the Google Maps update be sure to check out this blog post.
