Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 heading to US carriers later this month
Aug 19th 2013, 13:56, by Robert Nelson

Putting an end to another series of rumors and leaks, Samsung has confirmed the upcoming US availability of the Galaxy Mega 6.3. Except unlike those rumors, it looks like Samsung will have the Galaxy Mega 6.3 available with a trio of carriers. We still need the official word from the carriers, however Samsung has said the handset will be available beginning later this month.

The Galaxy Mega comes in Polaris White and Nova Black, however Samsung has said the individual carriers will “announce their specific availability, colors and timing.” Those three carriers include AT&T, US Cellular and Sprint. That being said, while we suspect the individual carrier marketing may vary, Samsung is pushing the Galaxy mega 6.3 as being “the ideal hybrid mobile device for those who want to experience smartphone portability with the immersive experience of a tablet.”

While we need those finer points such as pricing and release dates, we do know the specs. The Galaxy Mega has a 6.3-inch Super Clear LCD with a resolution of 1280 x 720 and is powered by a dual-core 1.7GHz processor with 1.5GB of RAM. Other specs include a microSD card slot (with support for cards up to 64GB in size), 3200 mAh battery and an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera.

Samsung will have the handset running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with TouchWiz. Aside from the Samsung UI there will also be plenty of Samsung features such as Air View, Multi Window, Easy Mode and WatchON. The Galaxy Mega 6.3 all also be a SAFE (Samsung for Enterprise), which should make it a decent option for those searching for a handset for a BYOD workplace.

Finally, as we have seen with other Samsung devices, the Galaxy Mega 6.3 will arrive with a line of accessories. These goodies will include the S-View Flip Cover, a regular Flip Cover and a Protective Cover — all of which will be available in a variety of colors. With that, we now just need the word from the carriers.

Beats Electronics looking to step away from HTC
Aug 19th 2013, 13:30, by Robert Nelson

The HTC and Beats Electronics LLC partnership may soon be coming to an end. The details have yet to be officially announced by either company, however a recent report coming from The Wall Street Journal is talking about how Beats are looking to not only make the split from HTC, but also take on a new investor to push forward with some growth. Simply put, it looks like Beats is making moves to take back the 25 percent stake currently being held by HTC.

The details here are pointing towards Beats taking a new investor that will be able to acquire a minority stake in ownership and also provide some debt financing. While a firm timeline is not yet known, it looks like this could all happen within a few weeks time. Representatives from both Beats and HTC have declined to comment on the possible upcoming deals.

While it remains to be seen what, if any effect this will have on HTC, it does looks like it could be good news for Beats. Having this separation would allow them to continue with current plans that have them moving from headphones. Upcoming Beats products look to include speakers as well as in-car audio systems and other consumer electronics.

Looking back Beats sold the first pair of headphones back in 2008 with a price tag of $350. Looking at the bigger picture and it was said that Beats had a revenue of roughly $200 million in 2010 and have since grown that to nearly $1 billion in the last year. Aside from the 25 percent stake owned by HTC, Dr. Dre controls about 75 percent of the company.

While some may think of Beats headphones as overpriced and trendy, they seem to have planted themselves firmly in the market. According to an NPD Group report from this past June, the company has about 59 percent of the US premium headphones market. That group includes both earbuds and headphones and carry price tags of $99 or more.
