Kogan Agora launches with a 5-inch display and quad-core processor
Sep 19th 2013, 14:38, by Robert Nelson

The latest Kogan branded smartphone has been unveiled. This one is the Kogan Agora 5.0 and as the name would imply — the handset is sporting a 5-inch IPS display. In this case that also means a resolution of 1280 x 720. Other goodies here include Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and a quad-core 1.2GHz processor.

The Kogan Agora 5.0 also has Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi 801.11 b/g/n, a 2000 mAh battery, 1GB of RAM, microSD memory card slot and 4GB of internal storage space. Rounding out the specs for the Agora 5.0 include a 2 megapixel front-facing camera and an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera. The handset also has dual SIM support.

This means you will be able to have two active SIM cards installed in the handset. Otherwise, network support is listed as being quad-band 2G on 850/900/1800 and 1900MHz as well as tri-band 3G on 850/1900 and 2100MHz. Of course, similar to what we have seen in the past with other Kogan handsets — the price is fairly low.

In this case the Agora 5.0 is priced at $189 for those in the US and at £149 for those in the UK. At this point Kogan still has the Agora 5.0 listed for pre-order only. A shipping date of October 9th has been set and while the price point seems to match the specs, this could be a hard sell for someone already used to 4G LTE connectivity.

HP unveils four new Slate branded Android tablets
Sep 19th 2013, 13:59, by Robert Nelson

HP has unveiled four new Android tablets today. The new models are all Slate branded and range in size from 7-inches to 10-inches. The specs have yet to be fully detailed, however HP has said two of them will be powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor and two of them will have 4G cellular connectivity. With that in mind, all four of these tablets are expected to arrive in November.

Beginning first with the Tegra 4 models — these include the Slate 7 Extreme and the Slate 8 Pro. The Slate 7 Extreme is touted as being a tablet with a “mind to maximize your mojo.” That bit aside, the Extreme will have a NVIDIA PureAudio technology with front-facing speakers, a bass-reflex port and integrated stylus. Other features of the Extreme will include a 1280 x 800 resolution and 5 megapixel rear-facing camera.

The Pro will feature a 7.98-inch display with a 4:3 aspect ratio at 1600 x 1200. This one will also ship with goodies to include Kingston Office, HP File Manager, HP ePrint and HP Connected Photo for “producing and managing content.” Other features of the Slate 8 Pro include microHDMI and microSD as well as a 2 megapixel front-facing camera and 8 megapixel rear-facing camera.

The next two models are the Slate 7 HD and the Slate 10 HD. Both of these models will have a display resolution of 1280 x 800, along with a microSD memory card slot and front and rear-facing cameras. These models will also have Google Play access as well as Beats Audio and the previously mentioned 4G connectivity. Those opting for the 4G models will be able to get 200MB of T-Mobile 4G data for free for two years. Of course, anything above and beyond that 200MB limit will come with an extra price.

With that, it now looks like HP has left everyone waiting for some pricing details. Not to mention, something a bit more specific in terms of a release date.

Moto X coming to Republic Wireless
Sep 19th 2013, 13:23, by Robert Nelson

Republic Wireless has confirmed the upcoming availability of the Moto X. The carrier has announced the pricing, however there hasn’t been anything offered in terms of a release date just yet. And in addition to the Moto X news, Republic Wireless also detailed some upcoming changes to the available plans. Unlike the release of the Moto X, those new plans will go into effect in November.

That begin said, Republic Wireless will have the Moto X available for $299. And just to clarify, that will be an off-contract price. Those not familiar with the Republic Wireless setup may not realize they are an MVNO of Sprint. Basically, Republic Wireless uses a combination of cellular and WiFi and at present — has an unlimited plan available for $19 per month.

As of November the carrier will be adding four additional calling/data plans. They will also be keeping the currently available $19 per month plan. Those new plans will begin at $5 per month for unlimited talk, text and data over WiFi. The next step up offers a mix of cellular and data usage. This one is $10 per month and includes unlimited talk and text on cellular and WiFi as well as unlimited data on WiFi.

The following two plans are $25 and $40 per month and both include unlimited talk, text and data over WiFi. The $25 per month option then also includes 3G data while the $40 per month plan includes 4G data. Otherwise, while the new plans have been fully detailed, we still need some other details in terms of the handset.

In addition to a release date, or release timeframe, there hasn’t been anything offered in terms of the Moto X itself. In other words, we have yet to see any details released in terms of the internal storage and color options. Needless to say, we aren’t expecting Republic Wireless to have the Moto Maker customizations available though.
