Casio's response to smartwatch competition? "We're ready."

If you were concerned about how the endless stream of high tech companies entering the watch market would affect incumbents like Casio, maybe you shouldn't. Kazuo Kashio, CEO of Casio, fired a salvo in response to the coming barrage of competition.

"We're prepared" says the feisty 84-year-old CEO. "Suddenly, everyone's discovered the wrist. We've known for a long time it's prime real estate."

Casio also has a few forays into the Smartphone realm, as well as a watch that links to a smartphone via Bluetooth to show incoming messages. The challenge will be combining the two into a competitive smartwatch concept, if Casio intends to compete in that realm. Kashio didn't elaborate on what Casio hsa in mind, so we're not sure if a Casio branded smartwatch is in the works or not. The current crop of smartwatches leave a lot to be desired, but those on the horizon may set the bar much higher.

The Samsung Gear will give us the first glimpse into the new wave of smartwatches that are actually smart. Along with the Omate TrueSmart, the two should be first in what could be a long line of very comprehensive wearables is nearing.

Just how does Casio plan to ready themselves? It seems they believe patience is a virtue in the ever changing technology market. Kashio was quick to point to the "calculator wars" of the 60's and 70's, which led them to chase everyone else out of the market, save for Sharp. In a time when the smartphone itself has made watches a thing of the past for many, patience may be a virtue that may not pay off.
